Jimmy Jr. (Pesto's kid?) really wants a pet, since we're can't commit to a dog (still a little PTSD from our aging, more and more sick Scottie), and my wife is completely anti-reptile/rodent/etc. (I had both a pet rat and a pet snake until the pat snake killed the pet rat -- RIP Mr. Jangles), we decided upon an aquarium.
It seemed like a good way to teach him responsibility, it could be a cool project together, and I have fond memories of my Charleston roommate's tanks and the love he had for the hobby. And, as a man that doesn't really have hobbies, I'm kind of excited about this becoming one.
HOWEVER...
hfs. This is not as cheap of an entry into the game as I thought it would be. That $69 aquarium is going to be the least expensive part. But, I'm still stoked, even if Jr.'s interest will move on within a week or two. It'll still be my thing to do.
For those that have tanks, here is where we're heading.
40 gallon open top Looking at three species of fish to start, with at least one good schooling type (selection TBD) Plan to plant at least moderately Fluval 207 pump + spraybar Fluval 3.0 46W LED that will go across the top Plan to run C02 through a bubbler
Still waiting on the stand to arrive to get it all setup and start cycling.
If you got tanks, I'd love to see pics for inspiration. I was watching water pump videos on YouTube while soaking in the tub last night, so I figure I'm fully committed to the lifestyle now.

Most expensive 'free' pet we ever had. Then after a few years we had to let them go, they were getting too big and that was traumatic.

when TTT was little, he found a snapping turtle in the back yard. And suggested we take it to the zoo. So Dad and I drove down to zoo atlanta, talked to the keeper who was all smiles, and sat him in the tortoise area. That little f'er lived there for years, right with the giants.

I remember those side sucker fish that like to hang on the walls of the tank and eat algae were helpful with keeping the tank clean.

Oh, and watch out for Ich...a disease that affects aquarium fish.

It wiped out a couple rounds of fish for me back then, and I remember it was really tough to get rid of once it was in the tank.
RIP Ren & Stimpy -- you were two fine angel fish who left us too soon. Best $6 I ever spent. Probably.

Best advice is don’t do it, my fish is 9 years old with no sign of slowing down. My kids are attached to him now, which means weekly water changes so he doesn’t get white spots and act all lazy.
It is a HUGE pain in my ###, but the kids like mr Pablo so I deal with it. Don’t go down this road tho if you can help it. If you do, get the api water test kit and a hose long enough to siphon out the water. You’ll also need prime declorinator for when you refill the tank. Only use Prime everything else I’ve found kills fish.

Did you ever use the test strips, as opposed to the full kit?

Some guy on reddit made the argument that even though the kit is the gold standard, he checks levels more often using the strips because the kit takes so long.

But fish are so loving and appreciative for all we do. Nothing like coming home to the love of a fish.
