There's more than one reason countries protect their borders.

If this becomes a bigger deal

Feb 1, 2016, 2:10 PM

are we going to have to hear Trump and his beef jerky eating, WWE Raw watching supporters mispronounce the names of the virus and where it came from for a whole year?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Trumps response....

Feb 1, 2016, 2:12 PM

"no one in or our of the country until we can figure out what the @$%# is going on. I don't know what this is. But it's bad."

LOL totally agree

Mullet wearing hobos

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

uh, diseases spread from trade also...

Feb 1, 2016, 2:41 PM

So even if you stopped Americans from traveling abroad or prevent any visitors from coming into the country, it can still be spread from products and materials that come into the USA. The Black Plague was spread through trade routes established by the Mongolian empire that went into Europe. So this really has nothing to do with "protecting borders".

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Trading is constantly being screened, and also falls under

Feb 1, 2016, 2:43 PM

border protection. The black plague happened in the 1300's....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

diseases have still spread through modern trade..

Feb 1, 2016, 2:47 PM

By your logic to "protect our borders" you shouldn't be allowed to re enter the country once you have moved to Australia, because you could be bringing in diseases from Australia and Asia.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

See below***

Feb 1, 2016, 2:49 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you said you were moving to Australia, so by your logic...

Feb 1, 2016, 2:44 PM

you shouldn't be allowed back in the country because you could be bringing diseases from Australia or Asia.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll be screened, bro. Not really following your logic here.***

Feb 1, 2016, 2:45 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

there is no law stating people have to be screened for diseases when..

Feb 1, 2016, 2:50 PM

re entering the country. Also, some diseases aren't always immediately detectable.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I went to Japan during the Swine Flu outbreak,

Feb 1, 2016, 2:52 PM

I was screened for three hours before I could touch their land. If there is a major outbreak, people who are documented will be screened before entry

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And what if you get a disease before there is widespread outbreak...

Feb 1, 2016, 2:56 PM

you wouldn't be screened and would be bringing it back to the USA. Point is your "protecting borders" thing has nothing to do with diseases spreading across the world. To prevent that you would have to end trade and stop letting people from going out of their home country

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are correct

Feb 1, 2016, 3:02 PM

However, your argument is summarized by saying that any disease can come into the country by multiple venues; therefore, why should we worry about enhancing border protection?

That is like saying I should never worry about practicing safe sex (i.e. wearing a condom) because I will most likely get an STD anyway.

SMDH

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sounds good to me

Feb 1, 2016, 3:05 PM

I prefer to raw dawg it, myself.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it's not that hard to get , especially since you're a biologist...

Feb 1, 2016, 3:07 PM [ in reply to You are correct ]

You could build a 500 foot wall around the country and diseases would still spread into the country; because of trade, tourists visiting the USA, legal immigrants, and Americans who travel abroad. Diseases spreading have nothing to do with "protecting the border".

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes sir, those people are tracked and cross-referenced with

Feb 1, 2016, 3:09 PM

current outbreaks. Because I was documented in a swine-flu hot-spot, I went through vigorous screening. However, if I was undocumented, there would be zero accountability. It's a probability issue. The odds are more likely that an outbreak will be mitigated when people are documented.

Do mosquitoes respect borders?

Feb 1, 2016, 2:49 PM

I know these Mosquitoes did not respect the Island of Gilligan.

yeah in that your reasoning is flawed, also...

Feb 1, 2016, 2:58 PM

you travel across the world so you're someone who could be bringing diseases back into the country

that he's carrying more disease than you, dude.

Re: There's more than one reason countries protect their borders.

Feb 1, 2016, 3:03 PM

Yea, I just moved back to the US from Brasil...it's a huge crisis down there right now. My wife and I would kill mosquitos and then have to check their color/pattern.
