Schools Like Indiana and Vandy's Success are what's Getting HC's Fired

It’s not just the boosters. It’s not just the buyouts. It’s not even the losses.

It’s Indiana winning 9 games. It’s Vandy beating Florida. It’s Kansas hosting GameDay. It’s the programs that were supposed to be permanent excuses suddenly becoming proof-of-concept.

And when that happens, the doctrine shifts.

No more "tough job" immunity. If Vandy can field a competent OL and beat SEC teams, what’s your excuse with a $150M facility and a top-25 recruiting base?

No more "give it time" grace. When Indiana flips its culture in two seasons, patience starts looking like passivity.

No more "we're close" pressers. Because the bar isn’t just Bama anymore—it’s the team you used to schedule for homecoming.

Meanwhile, the big brands are spending a king’s ransom—staff salaries, NIL collectives, facilities that look like Bond villain lairs—and still can’t crack 8 wins. That’s not just frustrating. It’s destabilizing.

Because when a “basketball school” or a “nerd school” starts winning faster and cheaper, the myth of slow builds and structural disadvantage dies. And when the myth dies, the margin dies with it.

That’s when the boosters stop listening. That’s when the AD starts looking. That’s when the hot seat turns into a buyout negotiation.

This is how coaches get fired. Not because they’re bad. But because the excuses that used to protect them are getting exposed on Saturdays.

Thanks to the TNET Grammar Police correcting me, I do get an occasional assist with AI to clean up my post. The talking points are mine but my typing, grammar and spelling isn't what it used to be so get a little help to put out a better post.

It totally exposes the ones that do not adapt to change.

I agree with your post, the part about "give me 3 or 4 years to get "my guys" and a full 4 year group always used to drive me crazy,.......either you can coach or you cant, but yes Indiana, and Vandy coaches have now extinguished that garbage excuse

Agreed. The system is now set up to get good real quick.

If you have great experienced coaches and support staff, player evaluation and recruiting fall in line via the portal and high school.

All of which we do none of ..just pad our staff with inexperienced friends and family .. several years ago when Dabo publicly criticized the portal, some said dinosaurs will die off and fade away, to the ire of TNET .. now we see the fade… too late to adapt, no …too stubborn to adapt and adjust, probably …

You got me with the excuses....you were given more than they have in cash, facilities and recruits, plus your staff is paid about double...yet they win and you do not. Your reasons have been exposed as lame excuses.
