Well, you classics are
1. The Exorcist - scary but a bit dated in todays world 2. The Omen - still pretty good even today 3. The Shining - I've always felt a bit overrated but still a classic 4. Alien I - one or two gory scenes but mostly mood scary. Great, Great cast. 5. Alien 2 - action scary with much killing. One of the best action movies ever that just happens to be scary too. 5. Psycho - dated, but classic 6. The Birds - same as above 7. Original Halloween - all sequels suk 8. Original Friday 13 - all sequels suk
My dark horse specials
9. The Thing with Kurt Russell - terrifying psychological thriller. A group of men trapped in an ice station, except one of them is an alien in disguise. Oh my. very Good IMO. tense through the roof as they all turn on each other. A communist era "hidden enemy" remake that's far far better than the original.
10. Misery with Kathy Bates - a novelist is held captive by his biggest (and craziest) fan. This is a definite butt puckerer. Pure tension. Bates is awesome level crazy, you dirty bird! Also very good, IMO.
11. Scream - very clever parody of scary movies, which is itself pretty scary. The sequels are decent too - that's exceedingly rare. I think they've made 5, and I liked them all.
12. Black Christmas (1974). This is a double-black horse special starring Margot Kidder. A group of sorority girls are terrorized by a phone caller. Incredible to me this isn't more highly regarded. It's a precursor to all the slashers of the 80's and better than all of them, without being gory at all if I remember. You'll cr ap you pants the next time the phone rings!
Mrs. Fordt and I watch a lot of movies and I grew up on slashers, most of which suk. A genuine scary movie that doesn't rely on gore or jump scares is really, really hard to find. I can't even think of a good one made in recent years. Some of the Japanese stuff like the The Ring were pretty spooky, but good scary flicks are just few and far between, lost in a world of superheroes and CGI.

I'll throw in another one that might be considered more of a thriller than scary, though the scariness comes in not knowing exactly what will happen in any situation, or next. No monsters, no gore, no jump scares, but of you haven't seen Collateral with Tom Cruise it's a good one.
A tight little movie set in night time LA (which is scary in itself) as an out of town hitman goes about his rounds, holding a cab driver hostage to get him from place to place. A super simple premise that is exceedingly well done. Not traditional scary, but you'll be on the edge your seat the whole time. Strong mood and atmosphere movie.

Misery will be one I will watch on the road this week. Lots of hotel time in my future, so this list is a huge help.

If you haven't seen it you are in for a treat! Just make DAMM SURE you don't crash you car on the way to wherever you are going. You'll understand once you see the movie.

and probably several other streaming services called "Masters of Horror". On Showtime originally. They are all about an hour long, so you're not investing an entire evening on one. Each one done by a different famous director. 26 in total.
Most of these are really good. Only a couple are duds. You can pick and choose the ones you are interested in, or the director you like. You'll end up watching them all though.
One of them, "Imprint" was actually banned because it was so disturbing. I rec that one, creepy as heck. Also "Cigarette Burns" is crazy. It has the Daryl guy from Walking Dead in it. You can find sites that review/rank them.
