then I guess you wave your hand too early

You put it up on "O'er the mountain height"
Not on "echooooooooooo" which is when a lot of people do.
You also should tuck your thumb as if you are holding a Rat Cap in your hand.
Since the alma mater began in Clemson's military days, the Alma Mater Salute was born and is one of the most recognizable traditions on Tiger game days. During the military years, all cadets were required to attend games in full military dress, including hats, which they waved in the air during games. After the required military service of students ended, the tradition continued with the freshmen class. The "rats" were still required to wear their rat caps to games and began waving these as well. The salute is still mimicked by all Tiger fans during the last line of the chorus. Clemson fans raise and wave their right hands with the thumb folded underneath to act as if they are holding a hat as they sing, "O'er the mountain height."

height" ... I guess that leaves it slightly open to interpretation... But I'd say as long as you are done saying Eeechhhoooooooooo. Do not stick it up on any party of Echo.
