With 99 potential #'s and 85 scholarship players, why .. do we need to have players "sharing" jersey numbers?
I fully understand that players have "favorite" numbers and highly recruited guys even make getting a certain number part of their commitment deal, so obviously coaches feel obligated to accommodate them at times.
I also completely realize that the duplicates are generally divided between offensive and defensive players, but I've frequently heard announcers say something like, "Wow, that TD pass was caught by ### who usually plays defensive tackle ... oh wait, that's YYY who wears the same number as ###"
From a practical sense, duplicating numbers for guys who are likely to get playing time is sort of ridiculous IMHO. Use duplicates for red shirts and scout teamers.
With all the other trivia the NCAA legislates, it seems as if this practice would be something they'd jump all over.
Take it out of the coaches hands and relieve them of bowing to the silly demands of teenage egos. Assign players an available number between 1 & 99 and tell them to live with it ...

If so, which numbers are designated by "positional rules" ... and if it is a "rule", why is that? Did the NCAA make the rule?
For instance,
QBs are usually under #20, but Doug Flutie wore #22
DL are usually higher numbers, but not always. Some big uglies wear single digit numbers.
OL seem to be anything from 50-79, but is that a rule?.
DBs are anything from 1-49, but also, is that a rule?
WRs 1-49 or 80-89
Heck, Banks McFadden was #66, so obviously "skill" guys wearing a "lineman's number" hasn't always been an issue.

a hard n fast[easy bob] rule which college strongly recommends & traditionally follows. you'll get "7" on the dline in cfb, not in the nfl.
most of the numbering system was fan driven and didn't become 'official' until the late 60s or 70s.

In college football, a less rigid numbering system is employed. The only rule is that members of the offensive line (centers, guards, and tackles) that play in ineligible positions (those that may not receive forward passes) must wear numbers between 50–79. Informally, certain conventions still hold, and players often wear numbers in the ranges similar to their NFL counterparts; though the lowest numbers are often the highest prestige, and thus are often worn by players at any position. Kickers and punters are frequently numbered in the 40's or 90's, which are the least in-demand numbers on a college roster. The increased flexibility in numbering of NCAA rosters is needed since NCAA rules allow 85-player rosters; thus teams would frequently exhaust the available numbers for a position under the NFL rules.

when Banks played there were no restrictions on #. Later rules were changed to help referees determine elegible pass recievers, etc. as the passing game became more popular. At one time it was:
Backs wore 10-49. This was before single # became the rage. While not a hard and fast rule, QB's were 10-19 Halfbacks were 20-29 & 40-49; fullbacks were 30-39.Centers wore 50's, guards wore 60's and tackles wore 70's. Ends wore 80's. When flankers became common they were usually 20's. Defense didn't matter. 90's became common for d-line due to other numbers being required for offense. Same with single digets, QB's started the single diget phase. First player to wear #1 at Clemson, I think, was DB Peanut Martin.

The only hard fast rule is that 2 players wearing the same # can't be on the field at the same time. Within that framework, let the kids wear their choice of numbers.
Oh by the way, we dress well over 100 players for home games including redshirts and scout teamers. Got to be some duplications.

NCAA rules.
Cant have you QB with number 55.
NCAA wants center to be 50-59, Guards 60-69, tackles 70-79 and TE 80-89.
Control freaks is what they are. lol

Basically if you are 50-79 you are telling the defense that you are not eligible. If you come in as a eligible receiver you have to notify the refs.

Well, maybe in general, but we see DT's and LB's with number like #2 or #6, so I'm not so sure what you say is totally accurate.

As stated in the original post ... walk-ons (and red shorts) are the ones who should get the duplicate numbers ,,, but that's not the way it is working in a lot of cases. Starters are wearing duplicate numbers and that's the part that doesn't make sense when there are plenty of numbers to go around for all players who will be on the field every game.
