Run blocking

Nov 7, 2021, 11:27 AM

its gotten somewhat better as the year has gone on. There is one glaring exception-have to yards. Stuffed on 4th and one. Take over deep in their territory and we get stuffed 3 times and settle for fg. We could have used up lots of clock and put the game away instead of leaving yourself open to a td being a problem.

Once again, in what has been a near constant theme for 2021 season (FSU game excepted), another starter on the O-Line didn't play (W.Putnam).

We're thin as it is (even when the starters play), and were never a power O-Line such as Illinois or Wisconsin (or of course Alabama or LSU).

But with a starter out, we simply do not have the ready-to-play manpower to hope for short yardage conversions.

Why does Elliot insist on calling runs up the middle when our OL is getting consistently whipped?

They've actually done well between the tackles. That seems to be Shipley's strength-misdirect and come back inside-get a line backer to move and zone block the weak side. We have trouble going wide. Defenses are too fast in general these days to consistently beat someone to the corner-not unless you have a CJ Spiller in your backfield. We got beat wide not playing technique. We leveraged to the inside taking away the pitch guy already against the sideline instead of the outside where OB would have served as the additional defender. The big one he hurt us on Mukuba played assignment football like he should have had it been anywhere except the sideline. It was a bang bang play which in hindsight you could see a mistake but in real time he played his assignment. Unfortunately we have a DE chasing Cunningham which lasted one second maybe and was a no contest all day long. That said, Cunningham is a hell of a player.
