Rules Question

Sep 25, 2023, 6:42 AM

I'm an older guy and don't keep up with all the rules changes as close as I used to. So, this is a serious question. I thought that the current rule on the play clock is that it continues to run after a first down EXCEPT during the final two minutes of EACH half. Thus, if a team gains a first down during those two minutes, the clock stops to reset the chains. Is that correct? If so, then why didn't the clock stop after Ship's ten yard run on the last play of regulation?

I think it stopped until they reset the ball. We should have been over the ball and clocked it , but our multi million dollar coaching staff froze and then it was too late. Maybe they assumed Cade would take over and get the offense organized and on the ball? Kind of like they assumed he’d know to hand it off on 3 rd and 1 in OT. The lack of attention to details is unacceptable. They add up and in a close game , they are normally the difference in winning and losing. You’d think Dabo would know that by now. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I think everybody was confused on that play...

refs, players, coaches, and the chain gang. I was in the stadium, but from my vantage point, it looked like the ref spotted the ball and we went up to the line, but the chains were not set so we backed off. It was hard to tell if they just were slow or if there were players/coaches in their way, but they weren't where they were supposed to be.

To me at that point the ref should have stopped the clock, set the chains and put a few seconds back on. But I think they were just as confused by it as everyone else. Just another weird play to add to the weirdness that is Clemson football this season.

Why were the refs so darn slow after touchdowns for the teams to kick the extra point. I understand when they are reviewing a close play, but it seemed to happen after every TD.
