Hunter was a walkon and he torched Alabama and had the game winning catch to win the natty. I ask you... whose story is better? Then I ask, when do you think the Hunter Renfrow movie will come out?

Not comparing Apples to Apples

First off, Hunter is far more talented than Rudy. Second, Hunter had numerous FCS scholarship offers in addition to a few BCS schools (including App St.). Third, Hunter was a phenomenal High School player and played in the Shrine Bowl. Fourth, Hunter was a highly decorated Baseball player and had numerous offers. Rudy, on the other hand, may have started a couple of high school games with Zero offers!!!!

App St was not a D1 program when they offered Hunter.

I don't care if one was a preferred walkon vs another type of walkon. Both were long shots. Both had no guaranteed scholarships. Both started out on he scout team. One won the natty! The other made a tackle!!! I don't think it compares if you think about it.

There's still a huge difference ...

... it's a monumental achievement for a regular walk-on to earn a scholarship while if a preferred walk-on doesn't get one eventually, he's sort of screwed up.
And honestly, most regular walk-on's were pretty solid high school players. From all accounts Rudy was a bench warmer even in high school.
But, you're right, the Hunter Renfrow saga is compelling stuff, and it would make a great book/movie, but that still doesn't diminish the power of the "Rudy" story.

Big difference between a walk-on and a "Preferred" walk-on
May 31, 2017, 6:08 PM

Hunter was a "Preferred" walk-on basically chosen by the coaching staff to come and compete with a realistic chance at a scholarship.
Rudy five-foot nuthin', a hundred and nuthin', and was mostly encouraged by the coaches to "walk off".
Daniel Rodriguez is a much closer comparison to Rudy than Hunter Renfrow, but even Daniel Rodriguez was 100 times more talented than Rudy.

Hunter would have been highly recruited in Rudys day. And Rudy today would not have a chance at even making the scout team
