It's a new work week. GITT with your workplace suggestions

to get ahead.

1. Always have papers on your desk. Even if they are completely irrelevant. A busy desk means a busy worker.

2. When walking anywhere, walk fast, have a scowl on your face, and always have a piece of paper in your hand. People will think you're busy doing something even if you're just going to drop a tdrake®

3. Be very conscious of where your computer screen is facing

3

Jan 23, 2023, 9:28 AM

I have one screen visible. That screen always has work related stuff on it.

The one that is turned towards the wall is my play screen.

Always leave well-worn copies of Soldier of Fortune magazine, American Hangunner magazine, and Guns & Ammo magazine so that people are scared to come to your desk and ask you to do things. You can go a step further and really dress up your workspace with items like a replica Colt .45 paperweight or some small military figurines.

When I worked for AIMCO in Greenville, we were in the Insignia Financial Plaza building. I can't remember which one but I think we were in Tower 1 (the one right across Beattie Place from the Hyatt. I sat on the 14th floor for a while, kind of right outside the bathrooms. There was a real estate attorney on our floor that did some work for us, and every day after lunch he would drop something in the men's restroom that was not identifiable by the human nose. I think he had a literal sewer line running through his body, that was also mixed with dead animals. It was godfreakingawful. I think his name was Doug Brown, of all things, because he liked to make some brown.

#3 - actually BE busy and doing stuff...

1

Jan 23, 2023, 10:35 AM

if you're out of stuff to do, then go ask for more duties. When you are doing more and doing it well, ask for a raise or put in for the next available promotion.

Getting ahead is all about making yourself more valuable to the company. Look for 3 big things that need doing/improving that you can do or learn how to do.

I don't buy into the desk thing. My desk is not horrible, but sure not neat either. One of my best performing employees, who is also extremely organized, never has anything on her desk. And I know she has a very long list of duties/projects she's working on.

Messy desk is job security. Fire me and they'd have to hire two people to clean off my desk...and the floor behind my desk because stuff no longer fits on my desk.

doing any real work.

At some point this year the lay-off flood gates will open and all these gimmicks that bosses know about will be used to see who stays and who goes. I'm hoping it's a short recession and nothing like 08-10.

Microsoft, Google, Amazon have already started their layoffs. Morgan Stanley and BofA CEOs are issuing similar warnings.

The US economy needs to shed about 10 million jobs to get back to a healthy unemployment number and curb inflation.
