Davis and Simmons would be at the top for me too. Roscoe Crosby was a freak in high school. Saw him in a couple of playoff games. I saw Tron Jackson who played at Liberty and went to Georgia several times. He, Davis and Stanley Morgan, who was from my hometown, were the fastest I ever saw in person.

Played against heisman winner & national champion at Notre Dame Tony Rice from Woodruff 3 years. I was hoping he would end up at Clemson but his grades weren’t good enough. Faster & more athletic than anybody I ever played against.

The top four for me are AJ Green (Summerville - Byrnes triple teamed him in the state championship and he was injured and still caught some passes), Jadaveon Clowney (obviously, probably the best South Carolina high school player ever, 70 sacks in 3 years), and Sam Montgomery (Greenwood, terrible miss by Clemson in recruiting and became an All-American at LSU - he just crushed people, I saw him tackle an offensive lineman and the ball carrier at the same time).
I also saw Willy Korn play. Not the best "athlete," but you'd be hard-pressed to find a more dominant QB in South Carolina history in high school. And I saw Ben Coates play. It's a stretch to call him the best high school player in SC, since he only played a season and wasn't phenomenal then. But he might be the best football player to come out of South Carolina (5 time pro-bowler at tight-end, was #4 in receiving yards for tight ends when he retired, super bowl champ, and is in the Patriots Hall of Fame).

Melvin Stewart, Olympic Gold Medalist, former world record holder. He was 3rd fastest in the state of NC in his best event when he was 13, the 2 guys that were faster were both 18. Absolute physical genius. Never saw anyone his age even remotely push him until college.

I had the honor of getting obliterated by Gaines Adams. I was the guard/tackle (8 man football with the guard being the end lineman if the 2nd man away from center was split out) on his side. Im fairly certain the only time I touched him was when he stunted inside and took my jock with him.

I saw Gaines too, though it's hard to say he was as impressive as the four I mentioned. But his private school was ridiculous because of him. They were beating their opponents by like 70 points a game.

Sorry you played FB for St. John’s. I did too. 86-87. Orlando is a treasure. I was lucky enough to watch the great BB teams of the day. David Young, Derrick McQueen, Randolph Taylor, Randolph Scott. Whole team played above the rim way before it was a thing. Even warmups were worth the ticket. Bleacher Creature here lol. C/O 88

I saw Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen play in the same year. The best High school basketball player I ever saw was a guy in HS from Dutch Fork (I almost said his name). I saw him score 49 points as a Freshman in HS on varsity.

Darryl "Chocolate Thunder" Dawkins for Orlando Evans HS in Florida. This was a full grown enormous man playing against boys in high school. Straight to the NBA, played for the 76ers the next year. First guy to break a backboard.
If you never saw Nelson Welch play for Greer in 1989 you really missed something special. Kid literally never came off the field. Wingback, safety, kicker, punter, return man. Very, very fast. Never got a chance to show his athleticism because he was to valuable as a kicker to the Tigers.
