To get minds off of football for a minute.... basketball!
Oct 22, 2013, 11:34 PM

It's starting soon, with the exhibition game being next Friday. I know most on here don't have a lot of faith anymore in the basketball team, but I was wondering what everyones thoughts were headed into the season. I honestly expect us to be better than advertised with the preseason write ups, but still middle of the pack ACC...

I think we end up somewhere around 11th or 10th in the ACC, we will have solid defense but we need to develop some scorers

The loss of Booker and Jennings is addition by subtraction. I think we will see some improvement this year. There is some serious coaching taking place.

We lost our leading and #3 scorer, and our top 2 rebounders

off of a team that finished next to last. We don't have anybody returning who is a proven, consistent scorer. McDaniel is freaky good around the basket at times, and Roper has shown that he can shoot, but has not had to shoulder that burden alone. Unless somebody else steps up really, really big, it's gonna be another long, frustrating year.

So you really think losing Jennings and Booker is not a good thing??? We were a leaderless team from a player standpoint last year. We will be better because we did lose our leading and #3 scorer and top 2 rebounders!

and led in scoring and rebounding for a reason - they were the best we had, at least according to coach Brownell. Will team chemistry be better? That seems to be a very popular opinion, and it may be, but we can't assume that we will be a better team just because Milt and Devin weren't fan favorites. They will have to be replaced by somebody that was either not good enough to earn those points and rebounds last year, or is brand new and therefore a question mark.

Jennings and Booker got far too much blame and far too

little credit for their play. They were our 1st and 3rd best players last year. 2 seniors. How horrible would we have been without their contributions. Now, all of a sudden, we're going to have better leadership and performance with zero seniors on the team?
I don't think so.

I think they find a way to make the NIT this year and possibly even sneak up to 7th or 8th in the ACC standings. I think this team is underrated and is better than people are giving them credit for. If McDaniels continues to improve like he did from his freshman year to last year and through last year then I think he will be a tough match up. Roper has to be consistent this year with the loss of Rook. The last key is for us to hold on to the ball. Our defense will be good enough to keep us in games, just have to get that key basket.

Now let's get back to talking about football. Any talk of limited success in basketball is merely a walk in fantasyland.

You need to take your dribble to cootland. BB has had terrible luck with injuries;he is turning the corner in recruiting, and facilities improvement will help.

I see many relatively close losses - say 6 to 15 points. We will hang close due to good defense but the lack of true scorers is our demise at the end of games. We will be playing team that have 2-3 players that are closers - the talent gap shows at end of games.
Maybe someone like Roper, Coleman or McDaniels steps up and can produce in clutch situations.

with serious offensive skills that can consistently get the ball in the basket, then we will languish in mediocrity at best.
I'd say that if the stars align and a couple of guys really show that they can produce offensively, create shots and nail the open ones, then we could finish mid-pack. Also, we will need for one or more of our raw, untested big men to step up big time, because as it stands, we have practically zero inside presence.

If we could finish mid pack in the ACC I would be happy.

But, I don't see that as a serious possibility with such a young team and no real proven consistent basketball players.
Top of the bottom third may be the best we can hope for.

against what should be a very manageable pre ACC schedule, that probably means a winning record overall. That would get us in to one of the numerous post season tournaments now and would be progress

if brownell could break even in conference play this year (9-9), he ought be national coach of the year..i believe last year's recruiting class (this year's freshmen) turned the corner for us..while not a unc/dook/syracuse-worthy class, he filled our desparate need for bigs and depth..they are only freshmen, and we still really need a pg that can score, but we now have lineup options we haven't had in several years..and this year's incoming recruits (grantham and devoe) are guys who will likely get early pt and be starters as sophs (grantham) and juniors (devoe).
i see 7-11, or perhaps 8-10, in conference play..hopefully, our murderous first 11 conference games (likely 3-8, perhaps even 2-9) will not destroy us prior to reaching the more winnable final 7 games..but we will be a better team than last year, and I think the stage is set for a return to dancing in 2014/15 and beyond..i only hope that brownell can survive the hotheads who will surely be clamoring for his scalp over a 7-11 conference mark..we are finally headed in the right direction.

Seems like every time we get a lineup that has some balance to it, there is a big injury that leaves us without a key player.
Hopefully they find a good mix of players and we can play defense and score some points.. at the same time.

decent this year. According to every off season report shooting was the major emphasis this off season. We have several guys who came in with good reputations as shooters. Biggest problem last year was inability to score. We'll play a different style this year with better depth and athleticism. We won't run wild like under OP, but we'll score more in transition. That means easier buckets and more points. The bottom 1/3 of the league all have major questions. Who answers them best will be the team that moves us. I do believe it could be us.
