Robert Gunn III as punter?

There seems to be a bit of buzz around our punting situation since I guess we always need something to stress about (lol). One thing I thought about is why don't we use Robert Gunn III as a punter? He has a great leg. It seems like he hasn't executed a single punt while at Clemson though so that begs the question why? I don't see any reason he can't do kickoffs while also punting. I think making him the punter would be the best move since I doubt any star punters are going enter the portal unfortunately. Anyone have any idea why he isn't our punter?

According to some of the camp reports, he had been getting reps at punter.

You could question our punter situation every year. Out of all the students on campus surely someone can punt consistently. I say do an open try out and see what we got.

I honestly cannot remember. Was going with Billy Spiers…😂😂 but looked him up and he only averaged a little under 40 a punt.

Y'all are harsh. Bradly Pinion averaged 41.1 yards over his career at Clemson. Granted I don't know his number of pins inside the 20 versus Spiers but Spiers was a good punter. Punting is much more about hang time (which accounts for net yards per punt) and pins than it is about avg. per kick.

Spiers wasn't bad. He just wasn't good either.

a great punter can also boom them when he has too. like when you are backed up on your own goal line. That was our problem last year, and the other team always got starting field position around our own 40-50 yard line. then that puts a ton of pressure on the defense. We dont want that.

It amazes me yet we still have no concept of the skill it takes to be a goodpunter. It’s not merely just kicking a ball. It is a whole skill set to be learned. But open tryouts will always at least be a help. The punter is so crucial as well as a great field goal kicker . I hope we find a good one this year.

Many high school punters around the state are just as good or better than we have had recently.

He is being used as a punter. At least in the competition for the job anyway.

Miss Kathleen and Dabo need to visit Australia (the Land Down Under) and secure a Punter.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/stats/team/opponent/punting/all-conf/?page=3
CBS Sports 2024 TEAM punting stats (includes return yds)
#1. 45.9 yards Middle Tenn St
#9 44.8 yards Miami - leads the ACC
#26 43.8 yards CLEMSON
#52. 42.8 yards dawgs
#58 42.4 yards coots
The difference of 1 yard plus or minus, isn't exactly "flipping the field". I think we tend to remember our worst punts and other teams best punts. Punting from the 25 vs the 40 makes it easier to "flip the field." Also, as was pointed out, you have to account for pinning the ball near the 10.
Plus factor in wind direction, weather, penalties ...

That stat isn’t what you think it is. Swanson averaged 41.1 on the season. The team couldn’t be 43.3.
And Swanson’s 41.1 ranked 124th in the country.

Ahh I see what you did. You were looking at OPPONENT punting. That is how well punters did against us, not how well our own punters did.
So yes, we were #26 in yards against. Which is bad…#1 is the worst.

He was getting reps at the spring game. Let me tell you something.......everyone looked awful. The end of the game saw a little 'for fun' punting to a 9 year old. They were all over the place, to the point that Dabo was complaining over the mic. It was embarrassing.
