109 - WR Stan Rome Also Starred in 109 Clemson Basketball Games

In 1974 WR Stan Rome announced his decision to sign a scholarship with Clemson… …to play basketball.
According to the March 16, 1974 Atlanta Constitution, Rome specifically stated: “After three years, I’ve had enough of football…I want to play basketball in my first year of college, although I may change my mind later.”
https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-atlanta-constitution-stan-rome-1974/133669260/
Ultimately, Stanford Bernard Rome did change his mind. And he excelled so much at both sports for Clemson that he was drafted both by an NFL team and by an NBA team.
Before Clemson:
Growing up, Rome faced more than a few challenges as a kid. According to ESPN:
“What Stan went through starts where a lot of black kids' stories began in the segregated South of the '60s: raised in a narrow "gun-barrel" house by a poor single mother with a seventh-grade education, utterly isolated from the wider white world. While Valdosta was becoming high school football's national gold standard, many blacks living on the south side of town didn't even know where the school was. "There were imaginary boundaries you didn't cross," says Roger Rome, Stan's older brother by three years who was also a star athlete.
Stan barely knew his biological father, but with a formidable mother who stood 6'3'', he grew in her image and excelled at every sport. … In his sophomore year, Valdosta won the title, with Stan setting school and state records for catches and yards. But his life was already starting to go off the rails.
"I started drinking at parties, smoking a little pot," Stan says. "I thought, When is everybody going to wake up and find out I'm not all that?"
By his senior year, he was both a football and basketball Parade All-America who chose Clemson, where he continued his two-sport career. He also developed a fondness for cocaine.”

At Clemson:
Sports-Reference.com only provides Stan Rome’s statistics for one season at Clemson. In 1975, WR Rome registered the following stats:
- 15 Receptions for 286 Yards (19.1 Average) - 2 Receiving Touchdowns
https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/stan-rome-1.html
Sports-Reference.com provides Guard Rome’s stats for four basketball seasons at Clemson (1974-1975 to 1977-1978):
- 109 Games - 1,365 Points (12.5 Points per Game) - 3.9 Rebounds per Game
https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/romest01.html
After Clemson:
Being talented to be a two-sport star in college is impressive enough. Being good enough to be drafted by the highest league in the world of two different sports – Beyond Impressive! It started with the 1978 NBA Draft.
Enter Option A: The Cleveland Cavaliers selected G Stan Rome with the 78th overall pick (4th Round) in the 1978 NBA Draft.
However (as reported by ESPN):
“Still, the NBA's Cavaliers made Stan a fourth-round pick, though he was cut before the season started.”
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/6865954/cfb-georgia-tight-end-jay-rome-learned-two-sport-legend-father-stan-rome-espn-magazine
Enter Option B: The Kansas City Chiefs selected WR Stan Rome with the 277th overall pick (11th Round) in the 1979 NFL Draft. According to ESPN:
“A year of semipro basketball later, he signed as a wide receiver with the Chiefs.” https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/6865954/cfb-georgia-tight-end-jay-rome-learned-two-sport-legend-father-stan-rome-espn-magazine
Pro-Football-Reference.com provides Rome’s statistics during those four years for the Kansas City Chiefs as follows:
Stan Rome (Kansas City Chiefs 1979-1982): - 22 Receptions for 286 Yards (13.0 Average) - 1 Touchdown - 1 Carry for -5 Yards
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/R/RomeSt00.htm
With the world seemingly at his fingertips, some bad habits returned. Things got worse before they got better. According to the same ESPN article listed above:
“In the NFL, his drug habit swelled. Four years later, the Chiefs, weary of his missed practices and erratic play, released him.”
Once back in Valdosta, he got a job selling clothes and married a girl from nearby Clyattville. But every time the newlywed LaVerne Hargrett-Rome came home, she found that Stan had hocked something else for drugs: the TV, his wedding ring. So she fled. Just a few months later, Stan was shot.
"I remember being in that hospital saying, 'God, why don't you let me die? I ruined my life, all this God-given talent you gave me,'" Stan says. That was the bottom. Stan cleaned up, worked as a drug counselor, opened two halfway houses and became an ordained minister.”
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/6865954/cfb-georgia-tight-end-jay-rome-learned-two-sport-legend-father-stan-rome-espn-magazine
After getting his life back together, Rome raised two sons who became college football stars as well. According to Wikipedia:
His son, Brandon Frye, played college football at Virginia Tech and played in the NFL from 2007 to 2009. Another son, Jay Rome, plays college football at Georgia.”

Good to see each of the Romes succeeding in life!

109 - Las Vegas Raiders Select John Simpson with Pick 109 in 2020 NFL Draft

John Simpson took a job at Hall’s Chop House in Charleston while in high school. But it was not exactly to earn spending money for dating or for hanging out with friends.
Before Clemson:
Sports Illustrated describes Simpson’s childhood – and how difficult it was for him and for his single mom:
Simpson was only 15 years old, but he already had been taught the value of work by his grandfather, also named John Simpson. And money was chronically scarce at home, bills piling up without being paid, creating a palpable familial stress.
“I’d sit in my room and cry,” Simpson said, recalling difficult days as an adolescent—his father in prison, his mom working hard but struggling to make ends meet for her two sons, John and Jayden. “I felt like it was all on me to be the man of the house.”
This is how he went about being the man of the house at a tender age—taking a job in addition to going to school and playing football. They taught big John Simpson how to tie his black tie with his white dress shirt, and how to work as a bus boy, food runner, server and greeter to the high-end clientele at Halls.
For three years, Simpson worked whenever he could around his football and wrestling schedule. Sometimes he worked the night after playing games, coming in with cuts and scrapes on his hands and arms. The Halls staff bandaged him up and he did the work—putting his long reach to work at the bigger tables, and applying his natural people skills to charm patrons.
“I’m always willing to talk to people,” Simpson said. “That’s just being myself.”
Said Hall: “He had a smile that lit up the room. Great character. He was a teammate for everybody. Great charisma.” … During those summers, John Sr. would take his grandson to see John Jr. in prison in North Carolina. The visits were heartbreaking for young John.
“That was real hard,” he said. “I remember leaving (prison), crying my eyes out. I didn’t know the next time I’d see my dad.”
What got him through?
“Football,” he said, then laughed. “Football got me through.”

While at Clemson:
John Simpson had an outstanding football career at Clemson. According to select excerpts from his bio on ClemsonTigers.com:
“Offensive lineman who played both guard positions for the Tigers in 2017 before earning the starting role … helped Clemson post a 29-1 record during his two seasons as a full-time starter … played 2,047 snaps over 50 games (29 starts) in his career … selected as a Preseason All-American for 2019 by Phil Steele (first-team) and Athlon (second-team) prior to earning consensus All-America status that year.
2019: Consensus All-American who was a first-team selection of the AFCA, FWAA, Sporting News and WCFF … second-team AP All-American … became the sixth Clemson offensive lineman to earn consensus All-American honors all-time … Outland Trophy semifinalist … first-team All-ACC selection … played 725 snaps in 14 games (all starts) … 2018: Second-team AP All-ACC … third-team All-ACC … 2017: Had 11 knockdowns in 300 snaps over 12 games … 2016: Had four knockdown blocks in 160 snaps over nine games … allowed just one sack”
https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/john-simpson/
During his time in God’s Country, John Simpson helped Clemson to four CFP appearances, three national title game appearances, and two national championships!
Sports Illustrated quoted Dabo in describing John Simpson:
“He’s a big ol’ teddy bear,” coach Dabo Swinney said. “One of my favorite kids I’ve ever recruited. He just has such a sweet spirit. But man, is he a good player.”
https://www.si.com/college/2019/12/27/john-simpson-clemson-man-of-the-house
John Simpson’s time at Clemson might best be remembered for his appearance at the 2019 ACC Media Kickoff. According to GoUpstate.com:
When there was some very public complaining from various national media regarding the defending national champions not bringing one of their many star skill players to the proceedings, Simpson took it all in stride. He then became one of the more interesting stories of the two-day event when he made his entrance and did a few interviews wearing a blonde wig that mimicked golden-haired quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
https://www.goupstate.com/story/sports/2019/12/25/clemson-all-american-john-simpson-spreads-joy-throughout-year/2014139007/
And, of course, John Simpson’s rushing stats:
John Simpson (2016-2019): - 1 Carry for 1 Yard - 1 Rushing Touchdown
That is an excellent touchdown per carry! It occurred in 2019 at NC St. What’s more I have to believe that the entire NC St defense knew who was going to get the ball on this play:

After Clemson:
The Las Vegas Raiders selected John Simpson with the 109th pick (4th Round) of the 2020 NFL Draft. According to Wikipedia:
Las Vegas Raiders Simpson was selected by the Las Vegas Raiders in the fourth round, 109th overall, of the 2020 NFL Draft. Simpson made his debut on Monday Night Football against the New Orleans Saints on September 21, 2020, entering the game at left guard in the second quarter to replace starter Richie Incognito after he suffered an injury and playing the remainder of the game. He made his first career start the following week on September 27, 2020, against the New England Patriots.
On December 10, 2022, Simpson was waived.
Baltimore Ravens On December 19, 2022, Simpson was signed to the Baltimore Ravens practice squad. He signed a reserve/future contract on January 16, 2023.
New York Jets On March 14, 2024, Simpson signed a two-year contract with the New York Jets.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Simpson_(American_football)
Future Plans:
When his playing career is over, John Simpson hopes to return to his old neighborhood to help the next generation dealing with hardships. According to NewYorkJets.com
“He has said he wants to be a social worker or a counselor. He still visits the North Charleston, SC, neighborhood where he grew up and seeks to show kids there how hard work and clear thinking can help set the stage for their future endeavors.”

South Carolina Highway 109 is a 14.52 mile rural two-lane state highway that starts on the south end at SC 145 near McBee, joins SC 9 temporarily in Ruby and Mount Croghan, and continues to the north end at the North Carolina state line where it becomes NC 109. Medal of Honor recipient Noah Knight was from McBee.
The Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge is a 45,348 acre national wildlife refuge in Chesterfield County, SC. It is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with headquarters in McBee. The Carolina Sandhills NWR is dedicated to the preservation of part of the Carolina Sandhills, characterized by inland sand dunes, thin topsoil, and frequent brush fires. These brush fires, when controlled, remove invasive shrubs and protect fire resistent species like the longleaf pine. Woodpeckers, wild turkeys, and even bald eagles inhabit the sandhills, as well as red fox, beavers, white-tailed deer, otters, bobcats, opossums, and raccoons. After unsuccessful attempts to farm this section of the sandhills during the Great Depression, this area was consolidated by the federal government in 1939 as the current NWR.
