Rifle Rack

16

Apr 21, 2023, 10:46 AM

How many had a dorm room with a rifle rack?

Not sure today's kids would survive if issued rifles.

I resided in D-6 of the "Tin Cans" my freshman year ('67), and had a stranger for an "old lady".
Whenever there was a "panty raid" he would get in the rifle closet and slide the door shut. This
is where I would find him when I returned.

My room on D4 was adjacent to the stairwell and skewed.

There was a crawl space behind the rack where you could hide "people" after visiting hours.

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

My room in Johnstone definitely had a rifle rack.***

Our room was odd sized between door that came in and from street and one that went out up a stairwell to parking lot between F, E and A annex. Behind our rifle rack was a door that led to storage area under the stairs.

I had one in the quad. Always wanted to put a rifle in it

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think all the rooms in Johnstone had them since

it was built when Clemson was a military school, Clemson A&M College. Johnstone was the only dorm to have them.

Dang ..... I can't remember. I was in the tin cans for two years but do not remember when we drilled where I stored my rifle. Seems like it would have been a pain to go to the armory once a week.

Those M1 Garand left over from WW11 were heavy.

They weighed 9.5 lbs.

If you didn't know that you'd get a demerit. Although they were relatively heavy they were very reliable. Could have mud all over them and as long as it wasn't it the barrel it would fire. Same for the M-14. When the M-16 came out trying to get GIs to clean them at least daily was a problem and dirt/mud caused a lot of jams.

The real problem wasn't cleaning or not cleaning the 16A1. Problem was Armalite designed the gas system for IMR stick powder. Military contracted ammo to be built by Winchester and they used their own ball powder that had same peak pressure but sharper and shorter pressure curve. The A2 fixed gas system and added forward assist and the reliable version of M16 was born.

On E2, it became a secret door....

2

Apr 21, 2023, 5:05 PM

My next door neighbors on Johnstone E2 moved out after first semester and nobody moved in for the Spring semester. So, we knocked out the rifle rack's back wall and it became a trap door access to the room next door. The extra room became quite an amazing private lounge area for many of us on the hall that semester.

Of course, you could unlock the metal door to the room to access the hallway, but we always kept it locked when nobody was using the mini-lounge. You can imagine correctly that the area was seldom used as a study room, but other activities occurred nightly.
