Representing your country is not YOUR platform

The impetus for this comment is US Women's Soccer but it really applies to any sport, men or women, who wear the Red, White and Blue of the United States in competition.
Athletes seem to think they have a platform and they want to use it to espouse whatever particular social agenda they might have during the competition. When you are representing your country, the only platform topic should be all about winning. Leave your personal opinions at home. This is not about you; it is solely about representing the United States of America in competition. If you want to chirp about something, you can do it when you get home. But, when you are in the arena of competition, you stay focused on the WINNING and representing your country with class, integrity and dignity!
This women's team did not come ready to play and represent us with their best ability. They clearly had other things on their minds as they have in the past. This comes from the older players on the team who started this nonsense years ago. I feel bad for the younger ones who were in the arena for the first time and really wanted to just participate and win. They were led by a bad example and I hope they learned from it and will lead differently in the future.
I'm glad to see some of the bad apples rotating off this team and no longer representing us. We now have a chance to start over and do it the right way, and I hope they find coaches who will lead with this in mind.

I apologize for this hitting the Football forum. I thought I had put it in The Amphitheatre but it appears to have defaulted back to Football.

It was more about the attitude, lack of focus and poor mental prep coming in that helped lead to the downfall. The older ones knew this was going to be their last big stage and last chance to speak up. Some of it started during the lead up to the tournament but then it got shut down when they weren't winning and playing poorly. The criticism about bad effort followed and then they knew they couldn't really sound off at that point.

As Sun Tzu said, the battles are won during the preparation and planning before the first shot is ever fired. We didn't look like we were ready to play and it certainly showed throughout our short stay in the tournament.

I fully agree with you. I have not liked this team for several years now because of the unpatriotic way they have acted. I fully supported them in their fight for equal pay but just can not support the disrespect for our Country that they have shown in the last several years!

Sorry to disagree with you about the pay. The free market decides the salary. Women's soccer matches have not, do not and will not draw the attendance of men's matches. They are simply not good enough to draw the crowds. BTW not long ago a group of 15/16 year old boys in Texas demolished the USA women's national team in a match and if I remember correctly the matched was called before the second half ended.

What you have failed to grasp is that these individuals have been indoctrinated their entire lives by communist teachers and professors. They were enlisted as useful idiots to further the cause. They believe that America is the single source of past, current and future evil in the entire world. America must be remade into the utopia of communism.
Useful idiots are the first ones eliminated in all cases when communist take over.

Never thought I would think it or type this but in my opinion they did nothing but embarrass America with their mouths and actions during the anthem. Was not pulling for them and I feel I did that because I am a proud American and they did not represent the majority of US citizens.

I don't understand how they could be mad at the most liberal socialistic regime in history running this country.
If I hate something, then I remove it from my sphere. They can take their losing arses to another country and we will be better off. They are going to wonder why America is so hateful towards them like they are blindsided and unjustly ridiculed. Well screw them!
I was in South Africa during the Rugby world cup a few yrs ago. 2015 or '17, but they won. That country was beside themselves and so proud of their team. But the team Springboks was very proud to be S African.
Even if these girls won, they had already tarnished their history. Now they will be noted as fascist haters and not loved or cherished by devout Americans. Their fault!!!

I see a bunch of grown men acting like children and using a sport they could give two farts about as a platform to act like victims. Boo hoo, women and blacks don't agree with me, I hope they lose because I am a real American.

If any one of these women had decided to use their "platform" to express their views on the evils of abortion or the unfairness of men being allowed to compete as women they would have been removed from the team within a day. Fact is that only certain views are allowed and if that's the case then none of their personal views should be allowed. Good luck shutting up kooky leftists about anything however.

I've been watching U.S. soccer try to be relevant

On the world stage for over 30 yrs. Young kids at Italia 90. Our home country in 94. Then I watched, albeit half heartedly, as they tried to drum up perceived slights against themselves. American Outlaws? Laughable. Jurgen Kiinnsman was American soccer's best hope when he was hired as head coach. He flat out told the world that the U.S. would not win the 2010 World Cup. The melt down ensued. Maybe it's the fragile American sports ego but "any given day" is tough to overcome a lack of talent, feeder systems, and exposure of the game to the masses in our country. I say all that to say this. The American women's team suffer from the same hubris that affects the men. Maybe their success was only amplified by the failures of the men. If even the casual observer watches the women's world cup, it's obvious that there are only a few real world powers and even then, the skills are lacking.

The fact is, they DO have a platform, or you wouldn't be talking about them right now.

And so your solution is for them to "shut up and dribble"? Just because they disagree with you? Got it.
I may not agree with their views, but using that platform to create a peaceful protest based on their beliefs is way more American than simply goose-stepping in line with a more popular political perspective.

They are selected and granted a platform to compete for their country and not to use it for their own personal agendas. Like I said, they can say or do whatever they want after the competition but while in competition they serve at the pleasure of their country. I doubt your employer lets you do and say whatever you want at work but you are perfectly free to do whatever you want away from it.

When you are chosen to represent your country on an international stage, you put on your best behavior and step in line.
If these women want to come back and start peacefully protesting, that is fine. But you do not do that when you've been CHOSEN to represent your country. Any of them that have protested should be barred from representing the USA in the future.
Protesting during an international event is an embarrassment and a sign of weakness.
