I have an uncle that flew gliders over the Normandy invasion dropping paratroopers. He'd crash land the glider behind enemy lines and work his way back to fly again. The odd's of him making it back weren't good but he kept coming back and they were bewildered how he did it. They finally sent him home figuring he'd defied enough odds and was still living. He went home and married my aunt.

You need to go to the US cemetery overlooking Omaha beach - going there.....

and seeing all of the graves and then looking down at the beach was moving to say the very least. It was one of the most moving experiences I've ever had.

God Bless all the 2401 American dead and over 5000 American wounded on this day 81 years ago. They were truly All In!

In the eight grade I had a history / English teacher, we didn’t call this man “Mr. Bale”. His name was “Colonel Bale”. He told us he was a “Buck Private” at Normandy, France in 1944. So called because his base pay daily pay rate was a dollar per day ( $30 per month ).

We would implore him to tell us about his experiences in the European theater during WWII and occasionally he would to limited degree. He told us he actually arrived on Omaha Beach by Higgins boat like everybody else but he arrived on June 7th, the second day of the assault. He said it was all quiet when he stepped out into the surf and not a single bullet whizzed past him. But he literally walked ashore on the bodies of American and Canadian soldiers.

This man also fought as an infantryman at the Battle Of The Bulge. I wish my girls could have heard from men like him.

This is what true sacrifice looks like. But for these brave men, we'd all be speaking a different language.

It is unbelievable the courage and fear these men went through for the free world and the USA.

Truly, truly "The Greatest Generation". I can't imagine the bravery and loyalty they had. Dadly, not present today. We would have lost that war if it was today.
