West Point

When I was 18, to get into West Point one needed a recommendation from a National level politician. Those tended to go to go out as favors to the upper class. A guy like me on the mill hill had no chance for that free ride.
Excellent football players were/are judged differently. At the time they were required to skip the NFL for 5 years of service. These days they can get a waiver.

Tuition at the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point is free, and the school does not charge for room, board, medical, or dental coverage. Cadets receive a salary that covers all other fees, leaving them with between $225 and $625 per month for spending money.

West Point and Annapolis aren't exactly free when they have to give up years of their lives in military service.

I don't call joining the military to serve your country "giving up years".
Many of us have (and will) with out the benefit of a West Point degree. I seldom hear any vet (even those drafted) saying something like that.

I know someone at the naval academy now and they are certainly not upper class. You certainly have to do what you can to stand out though.

I was 18 in 1964. I had the grades, not the influence.

My father got into the Naval Academy from a lower middle class family with absolutely no status.

I was accepted at Clemson, USuCk, Wofford, Presbyterian, and Furman - in 1964. No way I could get into West Point for the free ride.

I joined the Army for 4 years. There were two types of officers. - RA commissions came only from West Point and Citadel. With RA you could stay in and be assured a career. All others were subject to reduction in force (RIF). RIF is involuntarily discharge due to the military downsizing. Thousands of officers were kicked out after the Viet Nam era. Not me as I left before that.

I got an RA commission as a Distinguished Military Graduate from Clemson in 1964. Any school that has ROTC enabled you to get an RA commission. Yes Reserve Officers that were in a Voluntary Indefinite status were subject to a RIF, but they were never all RIFed as we have not been back to only Regular Army strength figures since Korea, maybe not since WW II.

When I worked in dc for 4 years I dated a girl whose house was really close to the naval academy. Very cool place for sure.

I went to a naval prep high school and had connections there if I wanted to go to Annapolis or West Point, but I wanted freedom after what I went through 😂

My nearest neighbor is a West point grad - excellent man. He brings his grandson over about once a week to see my turtle pond. He is my favorite neighbor as we have a lot in common.
