Saw a post as to them, so putting this up to help all.
I am allergic and will die.
I know how to clear an area of them.
Mix some fipronil in some tuna and set it out in early Spring when they are looking for meat. In Summer like now, it helps to add some sugar and beer.
They take this back to the nest and all are destroyed. I have been putting it out a couple times a year for years. It wipes out nests in the area.
Fipronil is the stuff in Frontline that you use on cats and dogs for fleas and ticks, it don't take much to work.
I made a couple of these, but you don't need to do that.

You’ve counseled to use this method, that aren’t deathly allergic, could use one of the dozens of other ways to rid themselves of yellow jackets that doesn’t also kill the insects we need.

A bait out for any flying insect to find. There are other baits like this that are designed to repel bees, but the most effective yellow jacket pesticide I’ve used is the foam that you spray directly into the exit hole of their underground nest. If you apply it directly to the nests it limits the risk of killing the insects that you don’t want to harm.
Like I said before you guys need to do what you need to do to keep your families safe; It’s just not necessary for others who don’t have your concerns to use this method that puts at risk the insects we need for pollination.
Call me a bleeding heart if you want; agriculture is a billion dollar industry for our state and I bet there are many in the industry who are interested in this topic.

Bees are not attracted to tuna. A couple years ago a swarm took over one of my owl houses, stayed it in a year till the weight of the honey pulled it down. None died from my yellow jacket baits.

danger to pollinators, which is what I think you're referring to. You won't find any native, or non-native pollinator eating tuna. Yellow Jackets are not pollinators, though they can be beneficial for eating caterpillars and other garden pests. For the most part, they build a nest in the ground and wait for you, your kids, grandkids, or dogs to step in it so that they can sting the heyull out of the "intruder".

insect, in my garage, not being like yourself, and being in danger if stung, I just leave them alone, as they are good at eliminating spiders such as the black widow and the recluse. I don't think I've ever been stung by them. However; if in your infinite wisdom, you have a cure for fire ants, I'm all ears. My yard is full of them. I've tried every kind of treatment the Wal-Mart, and the local feed and farm stores have. I'm about ready to wave the white flag and surrender. Got any ideas?

Every time you see a mound sprinkle on a little. The mound will be dead in hours.
I keep a bottle handy and do not delay when I discover them, sometimes under a board or at electrics.
Over time you will wipe them out, but they will keep coming back from neighbors yards. The queens actually fly to new sites.
A bottle lasts a long time as you just need a little per mound.
If you keep these killed back, the good ants will stay strong and numerous enough to help.

Fire ants are with us until the end. I have had reasonable success using Ortho. It will redirect them from a particular area; however it does not wipe them out.
Fire ants have adapted as they have migrated north. The mounds you see are their thrash piles, the main colony with the queen may be 30-40 ft. away under a patio, drive way or the road. They choose these sites in order to survive during the winter due to the heat radiating into the soil.
Back in the early sixties a product was introduced that would have eradicated them called Myrex. It was distributed through the Clemson extension service. It was broadcast aerially and homeowners could apply it to their lawns and other areas. It was death on the little bas####s. Guess what the government declared it a detriment to the environment. In my opinion any damage done would have long been overcome because nature has a way of healing itself.
So much for government.

Fipronil in sprayer eliminates fire ants for sure. I combine when treating grass. Talstar granules work. Taurus SC works for ants too. I believe it may be fipronil as main ingredient.

Fipronil name brand is Termidor. Taurus is generic Termidor. It's all Fipronil.

Sorry to hear you are allergic, stay safe. If you can track down their nesting hole, here are insecticide free methods you can use at night, after the workers have returned to the nest. Not recommended for anyone allergic.
Diatomaceous earth is fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled micro-algae. It's a powder and not harmful to people and pets. However, it has micro sharp edges that act as 'broken glass' to pests. Purchase food grade DE and sprinkle it generously in the hole and around the hole. As they fly in and out, they spread the DE throughout the hive. It damages their wings and exo-skeleton, after a few days they will die.
Cover the hole with a screen they can't fly thru but water can pass thru. Weigh it down along the edges with rocks or boards. Pour a couple of gallons of very soapy water (dawn or other dish soap) slowly down the hole. Yellow jackets, bees, wasps, passively breathe oxygen. The soap breaks down the surface tension of the water and they drown.
Or simply cover the hole with an inverted glass bowl weighted down. They are trapped and will eventually die off. With the glass bowl you can occasionally check on the hive.
I have successfully used the 1st two methods

Yellow Jackets live in the ground and wasp's build nests that hang. A hornet is the worst sting I've ever received. They hurt! Thankfully I have not been allergic to their stings. I battle wasps in my shop and garage yearly!

Funny story about yellow jackets, I was plowing a field on a small ford tractor and ran over a jacket nest. They swarmed and were stinging so bad I jumped off, luckily out from the rear tire. The only problem was that the tractor kept going. The chase and the re-mount was not too fun.

1 part kerosene and 1 part old motor oil mixed together and wiped or brushed on the wood. Carpenter bees won't go near it. It will stain the wood too. Adjust the amount of motor to lighten or darken. Just give it a few days and the threat of burning is not much more than oil based stain.

Do what you gotta do Tug. I’ve worked in the woods my whole life and not many weeks have gone by that I didn’t get in 2 or 3 nests. Believe me there are enough of them out there that a few in your yard won’t be missed. Had a guy once get stung 20 something times from one nest.

Might have to try your trick. I absolutely despise yellow jackets! Wasps and hornets for the most part leave you alone unless you stir up their nest. Yellow jackets will sting you just for being in their way! Heck, even if you try and slowly creep out of their way they'll still sting you. The hell with em!

Ive been stung about a dozen or so time at once several times and up until a few years ago I was not allergic to them. I'm not as allergic as Tug, but where they sting will itch just like chigger bites until I take an antihistamine. I usually just spray the nest with one of the commercial pesticides.

If you can find their nest in the ground, turn your favorite skunk loose on them. Skunks love the larvae and will tear up a nest and eat the babies and adults.
Skunks took care of a big nest at my place along the driveway where I have to weedeat, then my dog took care of the skunk. Although, I had to scrub the dog and wait for the lingering aroma to wear off him, there is no fear of getting stung now.

Kids used to play outside dusk to dawn so we all got stung, me more than most.
About the age of 50 was the first time I reacted. By the time I got to the hospital, throat too swollen to talk. Doctors saved me.
Apparently one can not be allergic and later on become allergic. I took immunity shots every week for a long time. I have read up on it a lot.
At the lake I have since been stung from time to time as I am outside a lot. I quickly rush to the hospital, but have not reacted again. I keep epipens handy.
My point is you don't know if you are allergic, you may be.

The same thing happened to my Dad. He never reacted to a bee or wasp sting when he was younger. After he turned 50 he was allergic and had a bad reaction too.

WT & fireANTS. Was weed eating along lake wall in just shorts and dockside shoes. Got to feeling my ankles and lower leg getting stung. Just thought it was debris from weed eater. Then my ####### and cods got to itching. Looked down I was covered in fireants.
I took off running and went off end of my dock with weedeater still turning 8,000 RPM. Got my shoes off and shorts and drawers. Took drawers and started using it like a washcloth in shower. Finally got rid of those evil little basstages.
Swam around to ladder and got out of the water bare asssed naked. Pontoon came by and I turned my back. No way I was putting those clothes back on. C rawled overe to my Pontoon and got to life jackets and covered myself up.
Weed eater is still at the bottom of Lake Greenwood in about 12 ft of water.

Fire ants just move over a few feet and rebuild.
