Recruiting

Jan 10, 2015, 12:11 PM

I understand that recruiting is the lifeblood of college teams. What I can't understand is how teams like tcu, gt, mich state, Baylor, Louisville , and others never rank consistently high in recruiting but they still put good products on the field. Most of their guys are 2 or 3 stars with the occasional 4 but no 5s at all. Is it scheme like gt or is it player development?
I know you can find a hidden gem two star every few years but not year in year out.

Baylor and TCU get pretty good kids. They are both improving on the recruiting front. Scheme does have a lot to do with it. GT isn't talented, but no one else runs the option, so teams aren't used to seeing it. Think back to us in 2000. Dantzler was good, but very little talent on that offense, yet we scored a ton because of Rich Rod. I think that's what you see with TCU.

The reason Baylor and TCU do well with 2 and 3 star recruits is because of Texas. It's a HUGE state and football is king. That states 2 stars are like 4 stars anywhere else.

There are hidden Gems out there every single year. Plenty of them, and they are found, those are the ones you see in the NFL that come from the small schools you've never heard of before.

They're lots of really good players and the difference between a 3 star and a 4 star is very small. The services can't rate them all.

Services don't really rate anyone. They see who's offered

the kid and then decide how many stars will most help their subscription sales.

There are coaches that can see the potential in those 2 star players that the rating service experts can't. I think that Paul Johnson does an excellent job of recognizing potential.

Recruiting = very subjective, Vic Beasley was rated *** out

of hs in GA by all the services. Under rated. He's one of the few consensus All Americans we've ever had at CU.

I agree that there are hidden gems and that some coaches

are better at recognizing and developing talent. That is absolutely true.

However, a coach usually can't field his entire team with that approach and still be considered as an elite team.

Some teams do a great job of supplementing their more highly-rated players with those gems or raw talent development, and I think Clemson has done a great job of that (although we are absolutely increasing the level of talent we are bringing in).

I think it is as critical of a team's overall success for a coaching staff to create an environment that draws early draft departures to stay. I think that chemistry and family environment really does impact a program. CJ came back. So did Tajh...and Beasley...and Anthony. There are others. THAT was instrumental in elevating our experience factor and facilitating the development of players behind them. That is likely how schools like TCU and Baylor also are building something.

Also, coaching. It matters big time. Michigan is an example. They have all the pieces, but they just couldn't find the coach. Unfortunately for the rest of us, Harbaugh will likely have a HUGE impact. Florida is another example of how losing that coach (Meyer) can impact them. Even the great Alabama had down years prior Saban. These are teams who HAVE recruited well.

Finally, when all the pieces are there (coaching, resources, chemistry, etc.), the level of talent DOES make a difference. That is why Alabama is so dominating...and why USC was a few years back. FSU seemed to have that last year, but look what happened to them this year. I honestly think the legal and moral problems that put them on an island did have an effect. They had a great season, but not like they could have. Their invincible bubble was cracked.

Dabo is putting ALL the pieces together. That is why he transcends the Xs and Os. He is building a PROGRAM, impacting ALL aspects.

That's just one piece of the pje.

1. Recruiting
2. Talent evaluation
3. Devolopment
4. Scheme
5. Balanced classes ( not a ton of any one class)

It's who does all these well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

there isn't as much difference between players as

Jan 10, 2015, 2:06 PM

some would like you to believe. Out of tens of thousands of HS players, do you really think there is that much difference between number 100 and number 500?

In general - check the stats

Jan 10, 2015, 2:20 PM

5 Stars have elite size and speed (strength)
4 stars have good size and speed or elite speed
3 stars have average size and good speed
There are lots of undersized high schoolers out there that get picked up and have good speed or quickness - but can fit into a "system" or simply play bigger than their size. These are the 2 stars.
These are the 5'9 receivers etc., 200 lb linebackers, 250 lb linemen, 6-1 tightens, etc.

There are many exceptions to my example above - but fits how they can stock up.

JMO anyway.
