Really enjoyed the Olympics - what a refreshing change of pace

First off, I know there is a lot of money in the Olympics with the athletes - some more than others, obviously.
But how refreshing it was to not hear talks about new contracts and hold-outs and such. When I tuned into the men's or women's basketball - the talk was just about basketball. Not contracts and who makes what and who's holding out or transferring or an NIL deal or whatever. Just the sport.
Second, it was a lot of fun watching sports that you don't usually get to see. Reminded me of old ESPN, when they would show Aussie Rules Football. Really enjoyed watching the rugby matches early on. And track and field was maybe at it's best this year - some incredibly great races and stories. There was drama - but it was mostly all on the track.
Third, no endless episodes of talking heads giving their opinions. Just sports - athletes out there doing their thing. Loads of great (and live, if your schedule permitted) sports to watch.
In the US, anyway, I think it's fair to say that it was the Year of the Woman - US women's soccer exceeded all expectations and got back to the gold medal platform, women's basketball played a hard-fought gold medal match against the home town team, and women's track and field showed the men how to run a relay - not to mention the great swimmers, rowers, rugby players, and so many other great showings.
I'm honestly going to miss it. I'm excited for football season, and especially to see my Tigers get back on the field, but with all the dramatic changes in college football, and the ever-present big money and high drama in the NFL, it was so nice to see people competing for the love of the sport and the love of their country (for the most part!), and to have some other options for great competition.
Also excited about Clemson M&W soccer and seeing how well they can do after a couple of great seasons last year!
Go Tigers!

Was no talk of betting odds and constant sports betting odds which have overtaken sports in recent years.

I watched on Peacock, not NBC/USA or whatever, so may not have gotten the same commercials, but didn't see any ads for Draft Kings or any of that mess. No talk of fantasy sports, either. Just real people, real sports.

But Maverick rappelling down from the top of the stadium, riding out on a motorcycle, and ending up with the Chili Peppers at the beach was kinda cool. Basically - it was all cool once they started to leave Paris

I’m pretty sure someone’s ears perked up when he heard “vertical pianist”.
Did I say that out loud? I’m usually better than this.

And he had to smilingly shepherd a lot of non-sports “talent” while he was doing it.
I’m begrudgingly OK with some of it - Snoop sort of halfway grew on me after a while, and hey, if it attracts/retains a new audience segment, well okay.
I do take issue with the transparent SNL promos - vacuous guests making a negative contribution.

I wasn't a fan of Snoop being on the broadcast at first because he's not an athlete or a broadcaster, just a random celebrity. I thought it was making a cheap mockery of the athletes and the competition. But like you, he actually grew on me. To his credit, he seemed to handle himself with a great deal of respect and humility, he didn't try to make it all about himself, and he seemed genuinely interested in trying to support and connect with the US athletes. It was like he brought some fun and some inspiration to all of Team USA. I gained a lot of respect for Snoop after that, and if he can add some excitement to the Olympics and get more people watching and interested in the sports who wouldn't otherwise be, I think that's great.

Talking about their history with the Olympics! Even had Costas sign-off the segment with his famous, "We will return to the games of the thirty third Olympiad"!!

Some olympic sports can be enjoyed throughout the year. Rugby and T&F are always good watches.

It was great programming for these hot or otherwise wet August afternoons.

Had largely not tuned in to Summer Olympics these past cycles but these games were extremely well produced and inviting, and the breadth of all the different sports to tune into was refreshing.
I predict a mini fitness craze ahead this fall.
