life, only to find out it's not actually true?
Here's one: redbugs (chiggers, or, colloquially, "chegroes") live in Spanish moss, so don't touch that stuff. Learned it as a kid, and have carefully ducked out of the way of any Spanish moss I might encounter, whether walking, golfing, biking, or whatever. The result? No chiggers.
Turns out, I could have touched that moss every time, with the same result. Chiggers are ground-dwelling, so unless moss falls on the ground, it's almost guaranteed to be chigger-free.

What other lies have I been fed?

Complete nonsense. You can bustyourass all your life and never get further than where you came from.
Most of the *really* rich people I know barely worked a day in there life. They were either born rich, or made a few gambles that worked out the right way.

I had one of the highest paid blue collar jobs in Chatt, TN. I was complaining at during a break that I seemed to always be broke and no matter how much overtime I worked I remained hand to mouth.
An old guy sitting at the break table enlightened me. "It's not what you make that gets you ahead. It's how you spend it." I was insulted that he'd accused me of being careless but the words ring in my head even now.
BTW, I'm still poor but I know it's my doing.

Essentially the same job, anyway--for 4 different companies. When I started I really bustedmyass--worked hard, long hours. Sometimes multiple days of being awake in data centers making sure applications were up. All that ever got me was more of the same. The last 2 years at that job I did teh least that I could, because it didn't matter.
If I look at what I made in 1998-1999 compared to now, by an inflation calculator, I might make more this year. That's happened only 1 year since that time.

I came from nothing, worked hard in a not especially high paying field and now would be considered "rich" by many although I wouldn't categorize myself that way, and especially not "really" rich. I did this by living below my means and investing the difference for about 35 years. Also took some luck, obviously, as my investments paid off, I stayed healthy, etc so I consider my current reality a mix of good fortune and good old fashioned work ethic and fiscal discipline. And most of my fiends who are in a similar place financially also came from humble origins so its not an impossible thing to achieve by any means.

Grew up lower to middle class.
First job worked myself to death to get to Branch Manager.
Got another job as a Manager. Then buyer. Worked countless hours at tradeshows and on the retail floor.
Then went to sales. Worked all over the country and overseas. Traveling 5-6 days a week, meetings/trafeshows/late nights filling orders. Became a Senior Sales Rep.
Got poached by another company who saw my work. Kept climbing and became a Key Account Sales Manager. Then I made it to a Specialty Only. Make a #### ton of money.
Worked hard on another degree, then got into the best shape of my life. Went to another school and now doing what I have always wanted to do and have everything I need or want.
On the way, I married a successful gal through my work. We hit it off as we were constantly together working. Now we have been married 15 years.
So your assertion is absolutely nonsense and you have proven to be an angry old man who never either took chances or was too lazy to make it.
And here is the mention so that I know you saw this Ineligible user®

on what you consider *really* rich. And I was talking strictly financially.
Very few get to the level I was talking about get there by working for someone else.
And unless you are really a good grifter, you won't get there in government or police work, either.
But you took this as some weak-ass humblebrag opportunity, as well as a chance to throw some unfounded dig at me, which from what I've seen, is pretty typical of you. Next week, you'll be telling us all how much God loves us and how we need to be nicer to each other.
Oh, here's your mention tigermanac®

I speak to my boss's boss like I speak to everyone else. He respects that. I'm all of a sudden in the good ol' boys club somehow. Not that I want to be, but I see how it can help my career.
I haven't even started the new job as head ball inflator and there's already talk about moving me to county-wide assistant to the head bus driver. Obviously not because of my work as head ball inflator because I haven't even started that job.
So a lot of times you got to look for the coat tails to ride.

cold water from the tap is better than hot water through a hot water heater. Now if you have an instantaneous heater that isn't letting your water fester in a hot water heater, then that previous statement is moot.

Their humps are full of fat and are a source of energy when food is scarce. Their water retention is in their red blood cells that can swell. Camels can also drink a 50 gallon drum of water in about 3 minutes.

I believed that until I bought my first set of metric wrenches and metric measuring tape. I had to dig out some very old tools to tear that 283 ci Chevy engine down. When I looked at a bolt or nut I imagined a metric fit and looked for a socket close to my metric evaluation.
I set each socket aside as I matched it to the fasteners rather than throwing it back in the bag and having to endure the ignorance again.
I built houses with a standard tape but long ago I wished lumber and sheet panels came in metric sizes.

I did learn in college, from a stoner friend, I'd been putting my belt on backwards my whole life. Took umpteen years and a stoner who was in the perceptive-zone to tell me. My mother taught me how to get dressed as a kid, and women wear their belts backwards from men. Never even knew, or noticed.

But since mom taught me to dress, and clearly me nor anyone else was perceptive enough to notice, I never realized the belt thing.
Stoner guy was smoking on our porch and looks at me and asked if i was gay. Now I knew he wasn't gay, so I was like ......no. He then said he just wanted to ask since i wore my belt backwards. Is that even a gay thing? I dunno.
Immediately I embarked on a mission to actually pay attention to men's belts. Sure enough, they were all backwards from the way I used to put on belts. So anyway........

the belt develops a sag or a "crease" in the middle, so I flip it over for a couple days from time to time to help it "straighten out".

I read somewhere, when I was young, that hot water would form ice quicker than cold water so you should fill your ice trays with hot water. Despite this making no sense whatsoever I faithfully filled my ice trays with hot water well into adulthood before realizing I'd been hoodwinked.

I don't have any hair on the front of my ankles about 10" high. I used to wear thick socks in my first couple jobs, until around my late 20's. and I noticed all the hair fell out where the socks were. It never grew back.

I recall she used to point out all these old men with hats on, and they were bald when they took their hat off. As kids we didn't put 2 and 2 together that it was the "old" that made the man bald, not the ballcap. Plus the fact that the hat was being used to protect the man's head from getting sunburned, and that a bald man was more likely to wear a hat for that reason.
But I wholeheartedly believed it for many, many years.
