Question then. How many games would we have lost if we had

Dec 26, 2012, 9:35 AM

not been able to generate the high scores. I doubt seriously we'd be 10 and 2. The biggest thing a strong run o does is keep your spread off the field for long periods.

Total BS

I guess Saban has brainwashed sports writers, too.

So you found some SEC Homer who is a blow hard that does not like the spread. What is you point?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Read #7 about UNC (Whine and Cheaters)

Dec 26, 2012, 9:58 AM

UNC always looked down on the entire state of SC while I was growing up in the 60s and 70s, I can't stand those whine and cheaters. ;)

I can't wait to kick their butts on Opening Day, they backed out of playing us twice since we went up to Chapel Hole. What a boring stadium!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Haven't you been on probation twice recently?***

I get tired of posting and trying not to be accused of being a coot it's not funny. I think you should be able to say it the way you see it and not be hit with that label. That said....we play in a league where there is no defense only offense. We HAVE to outscore the other teams because like them....our defense is an after thought. We face teams with a defense and we struggle. Fla St. is close to having both an explosive offense and a solid defense but I thing even they have suffered on defense because they prepare for spread offenses. Teams that play spread offenses on a week to week deal will not be able to play smash mouth football at the drop of a hat.....just my opinion.

If you are one of the top 10 programs historically then yes the Pro-Style offense gives you a chance to win a championship, but how many times will we see lower quality programs rise above their norm with a pro-style offense? Without Superior athletes at every position you will not win a national championship with a pro-style offense. The spread evens the playing field and lets individual talents shine. Is it harder to win a national championship with a spread offense? Yes it takes some truly special individual talents, but with the right talent it can be accomplished in a year. Unless you are one of the top recruiting programs in the nation it can take years to develop a pro-style team that can compete for a national title. That is why the spread will always be a factor.

Don't look now "what" but you just made an argument for us dumping the spread and adopting a pro style offense. We are NOT a low quality program....and we have a traditionally power program. We would be above the learning curve with the rest of the ACC...should it survive or we remain.

I am talking top 10 program power. We are a very good football program but we are not a top 10 team as it stands now. We have to work for our recruiting and do not just get recruits because we are Clemson. Now within the ACC this might be true but nationally we are not there yet.

I agree with this

Dec 26, 2012, 11:05 AM [ in reply to Re: Read #9 on this Sporting News list talks spread vs pro style ]

because the SEC will always attract the top notch talent needed to execute the Pro-Style offenses, and they will be able to cherry pick the players needed.

Props to ND to be able to get where they are right now, but I think Bama is going to take care of business...again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Somebody better tell Bill Belichick and the Patriots before

Dec 26, 2012, 10:20 AM

they win another Super Bowl with it.

Curious then why Saban is afraid of the spread and

Dec 26, 2012, 10:36 AM

A&M (who runs the spead) is Alabama's only loss this year. Also, the writer should go back to #2, didn't he just write that the spread would be highly effective in the NFL when talking about Chip Kelly?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wondered how long before someone made that comment

Dec 26, 2012, 11:01 AM

Sounds like self contradiction to me. I wonder if he even reads his own stuff.
It amounts to if you have the best talent overall you should win most of the time.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think Saban is more afraid of the fast paced offense that

Dec 26, 2012, 10:51 AM

can go along with the spread thhe he is the spread itslef. With the fast pace he cannot trade out wholesale those three-deep defensive players he has in hi corral when players get tired.

he's afraid all the way to the bcs game? i think you're

right about the hunh and any teams inability to platoon against it.

saban did what anyone in any industry/walk of life would do and seek to better his company's/team's/organization's position.

afraid? all the way to another championship game.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

True, but he was also whinning to the media about fast paced

Dec 26, 2012, 11:34 AM

offenses and how dangerous they are. He called the attention to himself on the matter. It is then ours to ask "Why?"

he was given a podium, a mic & he used it to his advantage.

Dec 26, 2012, 11:44 AM

you can ask why all you want, the man was doing his job; #### fine one at that. it got the nation talking about exactly what he wanted it talking about.

what some call whining in his case, i call shrewd business.

Re: he was given a podium, a mic & he used it to his advantage.

Dec 26, 2012, 12:43 PM

i saw a quote from ole miss coach hugh freeze about sabans comments on the spread and he said give us all an equal number of 5 star recruits and we could all run the power game. but the spread offense does take a different type back and especially linemen. your linemen have to be in shape, because of the fast pace,be much better at pass blocking, and generally have a little different skill set than most big uglies. most linemen prefer the smash mouth down-hill style and dont like pass blocking. and if a line man comes from a high school that runs an option style offense he has almost never pass blocked. it is much more complicated than just a few changes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i agree with freeze 1000%. if you're recruiting offensive

Dec 26, 2012, 12:48 PM

lineman[and dlineman for that matter] that have nfl aspirations, you've got a much easier 'win' if you are preparing them for 3-5 years to accomplish that goal.

selling them on winning because guess what, we run 90-100 plays and 60% of those you get to back up ain't exactly easy i don't imagine.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Team's play books & play calling are not exclusive or based

Dec 26, 2012, 11:17 AM

on labels put on plays by the media. Most if not all NFL teams have versions of plays developed in the spread. An athletic QB enhances the success rate especially the read option. Occasional WR screens to talented WR's like Jones, Cruz or Bryant are sucessful 10-15 yard plays in the NFL. The New England Patriots often run a version of the hurry-up throughout the game.

Good spread teams have their versions of power run packages - like Utah State. Good spread teams also have similar down field passing routes to the Pro style teams.
The spread offense does not limit physical play on either line of scrimmage.

The sports media creates mythes and rumours to fill the internet, talk radio and 24 hour sports networks.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I totally agree.***
