Most Portal players transfer

Dec 6, 2022, 9:11 AM

for a guaranteed starting spot at their new destination. Clemson recruits well.. we aren’t gonna make that promise to anyone (only offer the opportunity to compete). The portal benefits lesser “brand” schools that have dire needs at a position (South Carolina at QB guaranteed Rattler comes to mind). Clemson is perceived to be “anti-portal” but in reality our backups are usually better. I do think this cycle that we may use the portal to replenish our depth. My biggest hope is that we land a stud WR (that would help us immediately).

Approximately 50 percent ever find a new spot.

With well over 1000 players currently in the portal means many are without a scholl

If you think we are having it rough look at Alabamas portal they lost the No1 OL or DL to the portal... on Monday at 2:11 per a ESPN analyst there was 417 FBS players that had entered the portal. Now you take that number and divide it by the say top 50 teams thats 8.34 players per school. So us having 9 is not a big deal. Even dividing it by 132 teams its 3.15 players per team. Heck SC just lost 2 TE and one of them is Jackiem Bell which had a good end of the year for them.

"As of 10 p.m. ET, there were nine schools that had 10 or more players enter the transfer portal, with Colorado State and Louisiana Tech leading the way with 15 players each. Oregon and Arkansas each had 13 portal entries, with Alabama, Maryland and Virginia Tech each having 11. Texas A&M and Kent State each had 10."

This was per espn.

So i think clemson at nine is gonna be sorta average going forward... what you have to look at is now this sorta thing is being tracked where just a few years ago you would not hear much about people tranferring unless it was a 5 star or someone with an agenda.

You are right that Dabo would NEVER "guarantee" anyone

Dec 6, 2022, 9:17 AM

(other than DJ, evidently) a starting position. But, quality players can quickly evaluate quality in other players they see in practice or games. If an incoming player via the portal shows enough in practice to earn a starting position, why should there be any more resentment over that than if a talented freshman comes in and takes the starting job? I would tend to believe the opposite would be true. At least they know a portal guy has been through some hard knocks already, and has some experience at the college level, versus a rank high schooler who should not be able to take their job away.

Defensive lineman and Wide Receivers who are good should not have to worry about getting on the field at Clemson enough to make plays. We rotate them frequently. If I was an edge rusher or an outside receiver at a smaller school who is confident that I would have a chance at the NFL, I would beg Dabo to take me. Clemson plays on a prime TV slot almost every week. Even the off games are nationally televised on ACC Network. You are not getting that kind of exposure at most schools. I would submit that playing 10 plays a game at Clemson and having lower stats might be better than playing 30 snaps at a lessor school.

Evidently Pace doesn’t agree with this.

And to clarify, I do agree with you. But it seems like a lot of guys aren’t ok with the scenario you presented. D. Collins and Swint are more examples of guys I thought might be better off staying here and splitting time.

How do you know what Pace was thinking. He saw very little action this year with Ship and Mafah and the same will be for next year. Maybe he wants more touches.

Chill, brother. I think we are on the same page. Read the comment from Moondog above. He said “ I would submit that playing 10 plays a game at Clemson and having lower stats might be better than playing 30 snaps at a lessor school.”.

My guess is also that Pace wants more playing time and that is most likely his reason for leaving, although none of us know that but him. My comment was that he didn’t seem to agree that 10 plays a game at Clemson and having lower stats was better than 30 snaps at a lesser school. If he did he would be staying. He was injured this year and that affected his playing time as well. Had he been healthy I think he might have gotten a few more touches and could reasonably expect a few more next year but still not getting ahead of Shipley and Mafah.

You don’t know Dabo guaranteed anything (and most would certainly believe he did not given his track record). I think Dabo was loyal to DJ because DJ had a huge influence on the Clemson Football team (he didn’t wanna jeopardize the locker room mid season). Cade is clearly the better talent but was still learning and undeveloped as a leader. DJ wasn’t guaranteed because last I checked Cade is the starting QB and DJ was made 2nd string.

You're guessing.

That's fine if put with a qualifier such as: IMO; I think, I guess or I believe. Otherwise it's just a lie; an intent to deceive which might start with you deceiving yourself.

If most players transfer for a guaranteed starting position there would not be over 5000 in the Portal. Most players do not even find a team to go to.

Some of those guys are just not going to be happy anywhere. (See Lyn J Dixon). There is no blanket statement for all these guys. They all have they’re reason for transferring and there are a lot of them.

Will Lyn-J play in the bowl game against us?***

Playing time is the #1 reason players transfer. Most desire to be the starter and are willing to transfer to get that. The 2nd reason would be for pay for play (NIL) money.

And some of them get to their new home and still don’t start, or don’t even get picked up by anyone. That may have been their reason for entering but it also may not be the result they get.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yes, our backups and starters are better than most in portal

Dec 6, 2022, 9:35 AM

thats why I don't get why everybody is so hot and bothered we haven't used the portal. I'm sure we will if defections, injuries cause depth issues that cant be fixed with freshmen.

Re: yes, our backups and starters are better than most in portal

Dec 6, 2022, 9:57 AM

I agree that a lot of our backups are better than what can be found on the portal. That said, for depth reasons, I would think we need to look at picking up a running back and a couple receivers this year. Maybe an experienced grad transfer defensive end type and maybe even a grad transfer QB to offer sage advice to our current freshman and future freshman.
