Cale Gundy, OU WR coach resigns
Aug 8, 2022, 1:31 AM
|
|
after reading out loud a derogatory word off a player's iPad last week.
Sounds like most of the players wanted him to stay, but he decided to step down as he didn't want to be a distraction to the team.

Yeah definitely. we should have forced Pearman to resign. Don't care about what actually happened, or the context. Its bad PR and a major liability in recruiting.

So stupid with that mentality. He was correcting a player as to what was not appropriate and regurgitated the word that expected players not to use. It was very much a teaching moment.
If you think anyone should lose their job because they were teaching inappropriate language like the word used by player will not be tolerated, then sir you are an idiot and a prime definition of the woke crowd.
Gundy should not be expected to resign as he was using this as a teaching moment but obviously could have used s better method obviously. He could have been reprimanded in another way but reading aloud the words of someone else in a coaching/teaching scenario is not worthy of a well respected person to lose their job and cause wife and kids to be punished as well. It's not like he used the word in a derogatory fashion and has the backing of all his players requesting him not to resign. It's obviously not a pattern of behavior.
This cancel culture and woke community love to see the pain and suffering of persons even if it's mot warranted. As long as it doesn't affect them then it is gratifying. But once it encroaches their world, they are not happy, just like the dem cities that are now getting buses of immigrants and they are requesting National Guard. It's ok for the cities in Texas/AZ to deal with immigrants just dont send to the NE.

As far as pain and suffering goes.....Why doesn't every neighborhood look the same? Why some houses are made out of just sheetrock while others in other communities are made up of the good bricks?
Wokeness could be productive in a lot of different cases........if they wanted to.

Not sure if this is a joke post or not but my guess the reason why not all houses look the same is because not all work days look the same. Want nicer houses, get nicer jobs. Pretty simple logic.

Exactly. Context matters. He wasn’t using it negatively towards someone and no way in H should he have to resign over the thought some thin skinned pathetic soul MIGHT be offended. People need to grow up and realize the real world requires you to sometime be able to handle the most minor of offenses without demanding heads on platters.

This statement is the poster child for wokeness. Forget about trying to do the right thing for the people actually involved as long as the decision satisfies the MOB.

Stop the politics and your prejudice. You are much worse than whatever you think wokeness is? You are unwoke to any you disagree with so you label it. I don't think he should have resigned or been made to. So are the assistant coach and Venables woke?

Sorry man its not "woke", just is what it is. Unless the guys a hell of a coach he will be a liability competitively. You gotta cut bait, pay him a good amount to resign and be done with it.

You mean when Dabo had his coach's back during a teaching moment gone awry, and didn't let outsized outside pressures force him into a rash and overly harsh move? If Dabo believed that Pearman's words were part of a systemic issue with him, I can imagine that would have gone down differently.
I'm actually surprised really that Venables would accept Gundy's resignation considering the circumstances being revealed. Not exactly a feather in his cap from where I'm sitting.

Garbage take and why we all just "can't get along". We cannot have 2 or 3 or 4 standards depending on who says what... it's either wrong or its not wrong. No one even knows what was said yet has an opinion on it. Dabo did the right thing Jay Bilas opinion doesn't matter, he can hold himself to his own standard... this is 1984 Orwellian societal norms that do not in any way end up well...

Tried to hide it until some former walk on exposed it. Pearman was not racist and was correcting a player who said it, but Dabo could have at least addressed it at the time instead of waiting for it to blow up in his face.
Venables learned well, and even though I don’t agree with the resignation they were transparent about what happened.

Gundy will want this encounter back for the rest of his life. This is a scenario that teachers come across everyday in the classroom. All the coach had to do was stand by that players’s chair, give him the stink eye, and move on. You never disrupt instruction. At the end of the film session, Gundy could have talked to the player one on one in private.

It would be interesting to send some people back in time to the locker rooms I was a part of in the 70’s and 80’s…their freaking heads would explode.
It’s a messed up world when a person can read someone else’s words and lose their 30 year career instantly.

It is hard to believe that there are no repercussions for the player who wrote the words, only the coach who read them. It appears that the coach is well liked and respected, so I bet that player will not be a favorite in the locker room now.

There cant be as young black men use the word about a thousand times per day. Its in the music and guys like Dave Chapelle use in in every sentence. If the word was really hurtful it would not be commonly used by the people it is suppose to hurt.

Joe Mixon teeeted out a letter strongly defending and supporting Gundy. Hopefully sanity will prevail and he’ll be allowed to continue coaching there. Nobody should have to lose his job (or have to offer a groveling apology as Gundy did) for reading a word aloud that someone else wrote, particularly not in that context.
Good thing Gundy didn’t read aloud the lyrics to many hip hop or rap songs - he would probably have to be publicly executed for that.
