Am I the only one that is picking up a little cockiness in his comments? Dabo “knows I will be great wherever I go”. It’s one thing for coaches to talk that way about a recruit but it just doesn’t sound like the humility we normally hear from most Clemson recruits.

Highly confident people believe in their ability to achieve. If you don’t believe in yourself, why should anyone else put their faith in you? When I hire people, this is one of the top three traits I look for in someone. Ability, Potential, Confidence. Confidence in yourself is not “cocky,” it’s a trait of all successful people. And I usually find that people who are offended by confidence are not successful in their own life. Hopefully you’re the exception.

I would say I am. I have enjoyed a successful 35 year career after graduating from Clemson and have raised 2 children who also became beautiful, confident, successful adults. I was also responsible for hiring and developing people at all levels in manufacturing organizations. There is a huge difference between quiet confidence and cockiness and there is no doubt in my mind and experience which I would prefer to have on my team. I’m just saying this sounds a little different from what we heard from many Tiger greats at this stage in their careers. Sometimes what is reported is hard to truly understand without a lot of context around it and hopefully this young man will be as great a teammate as he is an athlete. Hope you have a great day! GO TIGERS!!

I understand your point completely. However, for athletes, cockiness can be a good thing if it does not include selfishness. If he is very confident in his ability but also understands team results are the only thing that matters, it's all good.

By all accounts Deshaun was cocky when he came in. He said he'd never lose to South Carolina (which wasn't a given, seeing as how we were coming off the 5 peat right when he enrolled) and he'd win a championship with us.
We know how that story ended, so I don't necessarily have an issue with being cocky. It only backfires if you're a fool like Baker Mayfield.

I too understand his point but really didn’t get that vibe at all.

I think if you re-read past comments from blue chip recruits you will see something similar. 1) they are not deluded about their abilities...they know they can be successful and 2) he was just relaying Dabo’s comments.

But are you hiring 16-17 year old athletic kids wanted by all the top companies around? I think you probably just took it the wrong way. Dabo has probably told him (as I've heard many recruits say something like this) that he'd be successful anywhere.

Those were Dabo's words and not the kid's.
He would have to be crazy to not be excited and want to tell somebody that a coach who is thought of as highly as Dabo Swinney would say that about him.

Just because you hire people does not make you a success. He has a valid point and you instead go for personal attacks. It makes you seem very insecure.

If the kid has talent and is willing to work it’s true.
A lot of these Uber talented kids that bust don’t have their minds in the right place (work ethic)
I think we have a great shot. The fact he likes our family atmosphere is a big deal. We are unique in that way.

It would burst a huge bubble at Notre Dame if we got Shipley. Please let it happen.
They have invested a lot more time and resources in him than anyone else. This is why they are in the lead at this point. Ohio State probably represents his 3rd most likely option.
I seriously doubt he goes to NC State. Family ties will lose out this time.

ND is also in the lead, and has spent so much effort, because there's family ties there too...not sure which went where but his parents are ND and NCSU grads.
Honestly, aside from the fact that the ND allure ended years and years ago...if I was a kid/prospect, I think Brian Kelly would be THE LAST coach I'd want to play for, guy seems like a complete dbag.

Can confirm, have watched him his previous two seasons. He's in the same Charlotte metro conference as my alma mater and plays them every year. It's easily one of the most brutal conferences in the entire state of NC. Shipley actually played against Sam Howell his freshman and sophomore years.
He's the real deal and very much emulates Christian McCaffrey. He'd be a great compliment to Bowman's power running style between the tackles, and has the best hands of any potential running back I've seen Clemson recruit. I don't think we've had a hybrid type RB like Gurley, Elliott, Kamara, or McCaffrey that could potentially go 1000/1000 rushing and receiving. He'd be a gamechanger and the perfect back with DJU under center or in the gun.
I do believe he's Catholic though, and that's a major factor when considering Notre Dame.

No we haven't and I think we'll feature etn more in that respect this year. If so, that'd be a huge plus for us to show him where we're heading with backs.
That Catholic tie is strong and I'm sure ND will push that. Maybe they'll push too hard and push him our way. Maybe they'll be a blizzard that week in Indiana... Lol.
As for he and Dabo's comment on being great. Dabo probably told him he'd bloom wherever he was planted.
