Someone please help explain DJ's interception

I have not re-watched the game, so I'm going off my memory here. This play has puzzled me the last few days. So I assume the play is signaled into DJ, and he gets everyone lined up. He should be looking at the defense pre-snap to understand the coverage of the defense, so he has to see a CB on TE Davis Allen wide to the right. There is no way a TE is going to beat a CB on a go route, so he should have gotten us out of the play, or immediately taken his attention to the left where we had two receivers and analyzed that coverage. Does DJ not have the football IQ to change pre-snap or do the coaches not give him the ability to?

The corner had Allen beat the whole way and Allen stumbled.

he shouldn't have thrown the ball except to his back shoulder.

Our offense is scripted for DJ. It was the play design.

I think it was the opposite. I thought he was trying to throw the ball away, and just didn't throw it far enough...

Or he reads that the CB is on top of the TE and back shoulders that ball for a 30 yard gain. Any other competent qb makes that throw or at least that decision. Should that have been our mindset on that drive at that particular point in the game... NOPE (RUN THE BALL!!!!!). Unfortunately that was the play that was called and he didn't make the correct throw. That's on the Qb and OC

I honestly believe this is why Allen stumbled on the play

He was expecting to put his foot in the ground for a back shoulder and instead saw the ball going deep and got caught in the middle.

There were 3 drops total in that game, but don’t let facts get in the way!

* The play call was OK - as you said, he had a couple others he could have used as targets, but he never looked at them
* Once he selected the TE as his target, the call was still OK - so long as he recognized the depth of the CB and threw back-shoulder to the TE. If he had, most likely we would have had a big gain.
* The main problem is that DJ doesn't read quickly enough and doesn't really go through his options. If he tries to go through his options, it takes him too long to figure out what's happening and the delay in his read puts him in a bad situation with pressure on the pocket and when that happens, it's too late to salvage the play because he's too slow to get out of the pocket and away from the pressure.
* On the question if the coaches give him the option to change the call at the LOS, I don't know. They did with DW4 and TL16 and both of them were good at it, but I don't think DJ has that option - and if he did, I think he's too slow mentally to make it work. I just don't think he has a nimble mind - or feet.

Allen is inside the corner but DJ threw it to the outside.

If he throws it a bit inside it might have been a completion. There was a safety heading that way after the ball was thrown, but he was late. A little to the inside and it might have worked!

Here ya go... Allen was covered over the top the entire route. DJ stared him down and let ir rip. If he went thru progressions he would have seen the backside receiver WIDE OPEN.
DJ does not go thru progressions or they tell him to throw to a specific guy.
FWIW he did exactly the same thing in the ND game on a 4th and short (image labeled 4th down), had Mahfa out of the backfield for a first down plus right in front of him and he let one rip 40 yards to no one... it was not an int but did kill a drive an give ND the ball back in good field position.
