If it were all shared equally in one big pot then

it would be.
I don't believe that's what he's advocating though. It sounds like he's in favor of a pool of shared money that ensures all players get something, while still allowing the stars at the high profile positions to get bigger deals on top of that.
I don't think it's a crazy idea.

It might not be a "crazy idea", but it certainly won't be legal. You can't just decide to take other people's money and spread it around (unless you're a government).

It's not other people's money if the deals are offered

to the entire team up front rather than one player. There's more than one way to approach this.
Method 1) You let everyone sign their own individual deals, then take a certain portion of money from the higher earning players to give to the lower earning players. This is what you are envisioning.
Method 2) You work out a handful of deals where all players are included and the revenue is spread evenly among them. You then allow all of your players to go out and sign their own deals on top of this.
Obviously with the second method you need to find some local businesses that will go along with this because it's likely not in their best interest financially, but I don't believe that will be an issue seeing how there's no shortage of boosters willing to donate money to athletic departments right now. This would really be no different than making a donation.

He's not advocating for taking anyone's money. He's advocating for the school to set up deals with brands that can then be distributed amongst the players. Star players still would be able to make their own deals separate of these. People really ought to read articles before they comment on them.

That's probably something similar to how Dabo wanted to tie in NIL incomes to graduation.
IMO I think a kickback fund for the team to split would be pretty fair so OL could get their share.
You could have it tiered for starters, backups, or tied to graduation - whatever makes it fair.
Maybe some others can weigh in with different viewpoints but IMO it's not a terrible idea.

If he believes in sharing equally, he should place his compensation into a pool for all the coaches at the University. They all work hard.

I hate to say it but Ryan Day is in fact anything but an idiot.
According to some coaches I've talked to he's a really good offensive mind in terms of x's and o's and everybody says he's got control of the team better than Urban Meyer ever did.
Like it or not, the guy's good. I wasn't sold on him initially but he's getting it done up there in Columbus right now.
OSU's a handful right now. The good news is, I've heard he's a big-time NFL flight risk.

This is one of the few things you have written recently that I agree with. But I think you are right. It amazes me some of the comments I see on YouTube from Ohio State fans. I take it with a grain of salt because sports fans are fickle and only the most passionate are typically online posting, but even the great urban Meyer is getting slammed by Ohio State fans and they wouldn’t take him back if it meant losing Day. They love the guy and think Ohio State is better now than ever. And they’re not wrong.

I don’t like Day, but I think he makes some good points. The NIL is likely to benefit the flashy offensive positions most. Football is a team sport. He’s trying to voice that, as a team sport, the whole team should be able to benefit in some way. I would expect Dabo to support that same fundamental idea.

but he's trying to avoid the total disruption that the pay disparity will cause and it will cause A LOT! Right, wrong or whatever, you'll see how it will tear teams up. Wait and see how often the center ($0/year NIL) lets someone 'slip by' and ring the bell of the QB ($$$$/year NIL) so he makes his importance known.

I hate Socialism compared to the free market, but college athletics is not the free market. College athletics only works because of Socialism. College athletics operates in a bubble because it is a tiered monopoly. Football and men’s basketball pays for everything else.
We wouldn’t have that softball stadium and that successful softball team if we didn’t have a great football team. We wouldn’t have those soccer championships if not for football. Football and to a lesser degree men’s basketball are the only two sports to generate positive revenue. And it’s not revenue that funds everything else. So it actually is Socialism. It is redistribution of wealth.
The Supreme Court got it all wrong. They think there is a market out there that college athletes are being prevented from competing in and that players would make a bunch of money if college athletics didn’t limit them. That’s just not true. Less than 2 percent of college football players will ever make it to the NFL. That means for the other 98 percent there is no market outside of college football. Yes, technically there’s the arena league and the Canadian football league and semi pro football, but they don’t pay much and even they are selective. Even if you counted those you’re still talking about over 90 percent that will never make a penny outside of college playing football. So there is no market for them. That’s why with the exception of the top 2% all other college scholarship athletes are grossly overpaid. Grossly overcompensated when compared to a free market model.

I bet every big time commit gets some kind of endorsement deal along with a scholarship. No matter the position. Lineman included. This should be interesting.

You need to work on your reading comprehension skills. One way or another most kids will make a little bit of money. If only a few hundred dollars or a few thousand dollars. That’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about the big money. Only a handful of players will make big-time money. There is going to be the rich, the middle class, and the lower class.

Why is this a bad idea ? If I'm reading him correctly, he just wants a little something for all of his players, many who are making it possible for the star players to rake in the big money. Seems pretty sensible to me

it is actually very smart. I would even take it one step further and put this money in a trust that can only be taken early out for emergencies, and is available after they graduate. I believe these kids deserve a little bit more than they get, but at the same time you do not want to make it rain in a small college town like Clemson, it will further attract all kinds of unwanted elements, and the inequities between teammates will eventually lead to resentment.

Jerk maybe …. Idiot definitely not… What we saw in the CFP was directly correlated to a short schedule with no competition…with plenty of time to game plan for Clemson… Probably spent a lot of time in the off-season and during the season….

I understand what he's saying, but what he's talking about isn't NIL, it is boosters giving money to athletes to be distributed by the athletic department.
Example:
I own a business (say, BoJangles). I think DJ is worth paying 100K to for him to promote by business - appearances, social media tweets, wering my logo on his shirts, etc.) But,the rules say, "If you give 100K to DJ, you have to give another 100K to the school for them to divvy up among all athletes."
NIL is designed to be a tool where a player can profit on his NIL, not a tool where the school can profit on the NIL of one player.

I think all the coaches are concerned about what NIL is going to do to the locker room. Comraderie is important. The right guard getting 0 endorsements looking over at the QB drawing $$$ is not going to play well. The left tackle going to get a piece of the QB’s action for protecting his blind side??
