Had a friend that worked in the athletic department for a long time. He claimed back in 1998 (maybe) that Clemson was in final negotiations to hire Pat Summitt to coach MEN'S basketball. Then Oliver Purnell popped into the equation, and was chosen instead. He said that she just won back to back NCAA titles and was looking for a challenge.
Another one, i'm golf buddies with a guy that played on the early '80s Clemson football team. He was a walk-on that primarily played special teams. I think he might have returned one punt in his career.
He said that William Perry was constantly nagging the special teams coaches to let him kick field goals. Finally one day after a long practice they agreed and he walked out there and drop kicked one from midfield (60 yds) right through the uprights. Coaches were shocked, and he did it again. He swears that the drop kick was in the special teams playbook until Perry left.

Somehow he ended up roomates with Nealon one summer. He was very excited about this. But he couldn't pronounce 'Nealon' properly, instead he was 'Leanon'.
