Maybe the NCAA could create a draft process for teams to pick from the portal

Players can declare just as they do for the NFL. Teams can have picks through multiple rounds and sign their picks with NIL collective money. MLB and NBA are pretty much doing this with highschool kids. Either way something has to be done to reign in this nil/portal thingy.

The players wouldnt go for that. They get to choose their own educations.

how so? They are recruited by colleges but its still up to the college to offer them. And if they dont want to take the chance at playing for an unknown team....then they can stay put at the college they originally committed too.

Because they will always have plenty of options if they are good. There are too many factors. It would never work. They also have educations that are factors. They would insist on options. They are students as well and families. You can just draft some kid and force him to go someplace he doesnt want to attend. They are student athletes.

Some are and some are also into school. Some have already graduated. They arent all a bunch of idiots.

Maybe 10% at best are furthering their education as grad students. That seems to be the transfers we have gotten to date. The rest are looking for that payday. I'd really like to know of the 'portal' athletes, how many actually graduate at all. That would be an interesting stat.

Very small portion of the portal players are anything special and getting nice pay days. Most are just looking for more playing time or a different system.

I would not let the NCAA watch my dog for even 5 minutes.
Clearly, the best way to get this right……is we need A Committee of Experts…….preferably from the SEC, cuz they have Aggressive Timeouts.

SEC teams get first right of refusal, then BIG teams, then Big 12 teams, then the ACC gets to choose from whatever dregs have fallen that far.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Now, of course, this system only applies to those players who were not TWAASTAND (Tampered With And Already Signed To A New Destination) PRIOR to entering the Portal.
