I complained about Skalski being out of control at times
Jan 1, 2021, 9:37 PM
|

after our last game, and the internet tough guys here eviscerated me. “You don’t understand football” and “you don’t want Skalski to be aggressive” were the types of lame responses I received.
Well, I hope you still feel good about being so tough and aggressive. I stand by what I said.
I think the targeting call was a stretch, but you can’t put yourself in that position in a game like this. There is a difference between playing hard and with intensity, and playing out of control. Skalski hasn’t learned it yet, unfortunately.

He was ejected for targeting in the national championship game last year

as well as this game tonight. At what point will you see that this is a pattern with him?
You’re welcome to continue being a homer and keep telling yourself that he is repeatedly a victim of bad calls, but you’re still wrong.

I saw Skalski delivering a hard tackle to keep the QB from reaching the 1st down. He made the mistake of letting his head drop down and delivered the blow with his helmet instead of his shoulder pad. Two specific games spread over a year is not a trend, it’s playing with great effort but making a mistake. A trend would be more than one targeting call each season demonstrating he plays dirty or with poor technique. In contrast Skalski normally plays with good tackling form and gets to the ball carrier each game as often as anyone. Lack of discipline, poor technique, or bad character would have been much more obvious.
Clemson has had LBs in the past that focused on the big hit. McDaniel comes to mind. So many times he went for the hit with no interest to wrap up. That’s a better argument for playing out of control.

It has nothing to do with intent.

I don't believe Skalski was trying to make a dirty play. I don't think he was trying to hurt anyone. However, the rules have changed and all of our players need to understand what the rules are and play within them.
I agree that the targeting stuff has gotten out of control, and it's a very fine line between a legal tackle and targeting. But in big games like this, our players need to not get in those situations. Skalski leads with emotion most of the time, which is usually fine, but sometimes it isn't - which we have seen on display in our last two playoff games.

I'd much prefer to see our players learn how to balance aggressiveness with self-control. It's obviously not easy in a game like football.
People can keep whining about targeting and talking about how Skalski is a victim, but that isn't going to fix the problem of him getting himself kicked out of the two biggest games we've had in recent history (and costing the team as a result).

Did any one see Skalski statement about the call. Look it up . Personally I don’t see it as a problem . Both calls were legit in all discussion I have heard by rational people. Two times in 11-13 games don’t make him out of control. Linebacker is one of the most intense positions on the field and requires someone with a motor . He understands his technique needs improvement

Unfortunately the two biggest games in past two years. Wonder if his motor was In overdrive, whether he was frustrated. When he lowered the head he was gone. Two biggest games and he is disqualified.

He's a poor man's version of Ben Boulware. Ben played with passion and sometimes went too far, but learned from it and never got ejected from the biggest games of the year.

I don’t think he realized Fields was down at first. Looked like we walked away and celebrated the stop with his team once he realized Fields was down. Also he met Fields after the game to clear the air.
All and all, this was a bad beat for Skalski, Fields spun straight into the helmet. Without the spin it would have been a big hit but not nearly as bad and would’ve likely connected with the arms and shoulders on Fields hip.
Personally I’m a little more worried about Zanders. I feel like he got away with a few this year. Hard to stop a tackler from putting their head down when trying to bring down the legs of a big runner like Fields, but defenders that launch at wide receivers is a little more dangerous and a little more trainable, I think. But then again what do I know.

That was not a good tackle. That hit put Skalski’s neck at risk. Any time a blow is delivered with the crown of the helmet very bad things can happen. He made a mistake but in my view it wasn’t a dirty play.

the consequences of that mentality.
I love his passion and aggressiveness, but I'd prefer he figure out how to not get kicked out of playoff games even if that means dialing things down a notch.
Before the bubbas get mad at me, I'm not suggesting he stop being aggressive. He just needs to figure out how to make better decisions in the heat of the moment.

I have said this on the board more than once over the last three years, there are too many instances where Skalski makes jarring tackles with his eyes looking at the ground. It is a bad habit that he can not seem to break. If his playing career continues at the next level, I hope he can quit doing it before he hurts himself. The human neck is not meant to take that stress.

so what should he have done, let him get a first down. IMHO he made good play. The rule sucks the way it's written and the way they selectively interpret it... the NCAA needs to fix it. He stopped 1 in his tracks two yards short of the first down, thats unusual for a runner at full speed to be stopped like that. Fields spun into the hit, that is why he got hit in the back.

I don't think it was a stretch at all. Skalski put himself in more danger of paralysis than of hurting fields. Nothing is going to change his mindset and I'm okay with that. But these kids have GOT to stop using their heads as weapons. Not disparaging skalski here just don't want to see him hurt.
