Clemson ...
Here we are 2-3 years later, and its negative effects are starting to show up on the field.
Hope you enjoyed the ride.

For a man(Dabo) whose strengths are recruiting, salesmanship, and organization, I thought NIL and the portal would be a windfall for Clemson. Little did I know we wouldn’t use it in the same manner as our competitors

Problem is the way the competitors are using it is downright unethical. That is the issue. Dabo has character and is trying not to stoop to this level.

What they are doing is legal. If dabo

Doesn't "stoop", as you say, get used to losing.
I thought we were playing the NIL game as well as anyone, but I may be wrong. The refusal to use the portal is a dagger.

Bending the rules does not make it ethical. NIL was not meant to set up crowd funding to pay players. The transfer portal was not set up to allow for teams to tamper with other teams players. Are teams getting away with it because CFB has annual free agency with no tamper rules etc. yes?
Not saying we are not going to have to do what others are doing but it is a bit unethical and you probably hold you nose as you do it.

can come in, clean it up, and establish consistent rules for it across the entire sport, BUT it was always incredibly clear that this is exactly how NIL would be used - as a loop hole for boosters to buy players.
It always seemed likely to favor programs with a few specific qualities - huge alumni base, unusually wealthy boosters, desperate to win, etc.

…at a solid run for the national championship, before the NIL & portal would lay the cupboards bare.
I was 1 year off.

All this NIL BS actually got started only bc of the NCAA rules were aimed at keeping student athletes cupboards bare, and using the student athletes to fill their own pockets. If they would have developed a system that would have given the college athletes a small share of the billions they were raking in from the student athletes that were battling with keeping up their grades and working their butts off in practice, the NIL still wouldn't be the thing that's destroying college sports the way that it has been doing since that one court case going against the NCAA and their gross greed of the student athlete labor!!! Their average day is 20 time tougher than the people who were sitting back laughing about all the money they were making from the free labor from who we call the student athlete, when not a single one of those people greedy people could have made through a day that the student athlete goes through 11 months a year!!!

To play football. And get a free education. This whole narrative they were being taken advantage of is ludicrous.

Star players were being payed in one way or another at every major program pre NIL. Let's not be naïve.
Refusal to fill roster gaps via the portal. Hiring inexperienced position coaches.
These are hurting the program more than NIL. Clemson has a dedicated NIL department and the program has plenty of cash.

And I’m still enjoying the ride. It’s actually better with people like you off the bandwagon. I’ve got more leg room now.
