Could the SEC break off and declare its own National Champ (link)

Not sure if this is a good idea or not.
I have always disliked the SEC and most of the teams. The arrogance is revolting and gets very old. Plus, some of the teams cheat or at least push it VERY CLOSE.
Sad thing is, if expansion does not occur soon I can see the SEC doing this and they probably will get away with it

Just have Bama break off and declare themselves National Champs every year.

Same difference. They already claim a bunch of BS ones already, like many other SEC schools do.

With the aid of eSECpn the SEC will lead the decline of interest in college football.

teams and let's just say we stay in the selected few.
Bama Clemson Georgia Florida LSU Arkansas (Walton Money) Texas Texas AM Southern Cal Oregon Notre Dame Ohio State Michigan Oklahoma Oklahoma State (T Boone Pickens) North Carolina Auburn Florida State Miami Penn State Nebraska? Coots...yep, I did it
Okay, we get 8 more...Y'all pick'em.....But if that were to happen...Would there be enough interest nationwide to keep football viable at the high school level....and if not, would that lead to the end of the sport we all enjoy so much. If Iowa, Wisconsin,Montana,Kansas,Nevada,Hawaii,Washington, etc. don't evenhave a team in the game, would that eventually lead to a nationwide abandonment of the sport...

While you may have 30 teams, only a select few would make any playoff type scenario.Seriously.do you think an UNC could beat Alabama, or Nebraska beat Clemson year in and year out. Just look at the teams that have appeared in the CFP versus those that have not even won a Conference Championship. The total # is 9,if my math is correct.

They know that will be a huge mistake. All the other conferences would band together and have a true National Champ. The SEC 'winner' would be just the SEC Champ only. LOL

You're partly right. In that scenario the SEC winner is really only the SEC champ. But, there is no "true" national champion if the SEC isn't involved. Like it or not, everyone knows it.

Sure would be a true champ. If the SEC opts out, they are out. Eventually, they would lose recruits back to the real college football programs. I don't think the presidents of those schools would allow their universities to become the NFL-minor league.
interesting dialogue though.....

If the SEC alone pulled out of the NCAA, there would still be a NCG, and there would still be a true NCG winner with, or without the SEC involvement. The SEC isn't all of the power in college sports!!!

So am I understanding that- if for some season- the sun did not come up and water flowed uphill and shyt did not stink- and grannies biscuits did n't raise- if an SEC team did not make the final four- spots for the play off- are you saying that there would really not be a National Champion in College Football? Mercy- call the doctor- I think I done got the vapors!

Won't happen, but if it was even discussed, somebody other than an SEC team would have to again win the Championship.

I don't think even the schools and conferences have any idea how this will all end up. So, I certainly don't. But I suspect college football will look significantly different than it does now. I would be shocked if there are 130 "FCS" or Division 1A or whatever you want to call it in 10 years. I suspect that number will end up closer to 60, maybe even 30.

I think they’re more then welcome to but the winner wouldn’t be a true National Champion. To me you have to have the potential to play everyone in the nation. Essentially taking your ball and going home ain’t it.

Wouldn't surprise me. They have always thought they were in a different universe than anyone else. Hope it happens. Will make life a lot more enjoyable for all the other conferences.

While they could break off and declare it's own National Championship there are several reasons, IMO, why they will not. 1) The SEC does not control the CFP's. 2)The SEC basically would be just a championship between the two divisions, no matter how many quarter final or semi final games they play. 3) The other 4 power conferences would more than likely merge into their own playoff system, and not schedule any regular season games with any of the SEC teams which would mean the SEC would be nothing but a one trick pony. 4)The CFP committee could simply not vote for any of the SEC teams in the top 4 if any of the above things were to happen.

Just another way to hide from Clemson. If you can't make them go away, exclude them. And even if Clemson joined the SEC someday, a conference champion only is NOT a national champion whether it's Clemson or any other team. The SEC needs to get over itself before it drives itself out of business from intrusive and exaggerated advertising.

At least you finally admitted it AFDAWG. The SEC is afraid that Clemson will be the one to crash their party and break up the streak. We all know the SEC can only count on UGA once every 41 years.

Only way this happens if TX or OK is starting to get squirrelly about switching over to the sec and a more difficult path to the playoffs.
Sounded easy enough with 12 teams getting in...but keeping it at 4 might be biting off more than the thought.
Just something to think about.
