Completely baffled in Columbia ,S.C.

We have many graduates of mid western states living here. Ohio State, Illinois, Indiana, and others. It blows my mind how they jump on board and support the gamecocks like they do by buy buying up season tickets and etc. Seems they could care less about their former schools.....Maybe it is because there are no other college teams to support in Columbia...

They buy the “flagship university” BS.

You would think tOSU fans would recognize it. It’s not like they think Ohio University is the “flagship university” of their State. Coot U is the Ohio U of South Carolina.

They come down here to flee exorbitant taxes, crime and corruption. The only caveat is they bring their lousy politics with them and are slowly ruining everywhere they settle. This only makes it easier to understand their affection for u of suck.

People want to be liked and fit in, so of course, they’re going to pull for the team everyone else pulls for in the area. I live in the Columba area, also. It baffles me the influx of Yankees that’s going on around here, from the coast to Columbia. Subdivisons are being built at an unbelievable rate, and there’s a lot of Ohio and New Yorkers moving in. Actually saw an Ohio State/Uof5C sticker the other day on a car.

Depends on when they moved here

The ones that moved here during their streak tend to be gamecocks. Those that moved here during our streak lean tigers. Then it matters where their kids end up - since UofSC (snicker) accepts twice as many as Clemson you are going to get twice as many coot parents. Personally I don't mind being in the minority - especially lately

Are you interested in an explanation? While I wasn't from the midwest, I also wasn't from the deep south. My first 30 years were in Virginia and Philadelphia. People are Pro Football fans primarily, Redskins or Eagles, respectively. If you are not a graduate, you are not usually a college football fan of a college team. The exception is Va Tech who got a bunch of band wagon fans when Vick was there and they were near the top. I graduated from VMI in '72 and how can you be much of a fan when they won 3 games in the 4 years I was there and only saw one of the wins (a home game). In '81 I moved to Irmo. Everyone was a college football fan. Completely new to me and you didn't need any connection to the school. I remember questioning a U of SuCk fan (not associated with any connection to U of SuCk) how this could be and his answer was straightforward, no pro teams. In late 80s thru mid 90's a local chicken fan (actually a Missouri grad) had a ticket offer for me. I friend of his was a half scholarship donor and had extra (lesser) tickets and offered them to me. I accepted and became a fan of the chickens. These were great tickets, in the lower deck but covered by the upper deck so protected from the sun and rain. He had another friend who owned a cockaboose. My routine was drive 20 minutes, pay $20 for a parking space in the industrial shops below the stadium, 10 minute walk, hang out pregame in a cockaboose, and then go to my very comfortable seats. Tickets were face value. September games were almost aleways in the evenings. Fast forward to fall of '97. My daughter was a Irmo HS senior. ALL her smart friends would be going to Clemson or going out of state. We went to my first Clemson game. Homecoming '97. She loved the tour and the place. She matriculated in '98 so we started going to the games. First name was noon and I had never been so hot at a football game in my life. A players mom died at that game as I recall. I got extra tickets for the season from a Clemson grad friend. Good tickets, lower deck just above visiting team, lot 3a parking pass. My daughter became a Rally Cat the next year so we definitely had to attend games. It always involved a 2 hour drive to get there and 2 nights in a hotel too many times to remember. My son transferred in after 1 year at Trident so I had both kids at Clemson. Tailgating with both kids will always be remembered. My son was ALWAYS on the hill. I'm sure I'll get TLDR but the point is that it takes lots more effort to be a dedicated Clemson fan if you live around Columbia. ... and Carolina is in Chapel Hill and USC is in California. p.s. My wife, 2 kids, and 4 grandkids went to the just past Syracuse game via stubhub. This involved lot 5a pass, 3 rooms for 2 nights, and lower deck 40 yard line tickets, so I'm sure it cost well over $3k but it was worth it for one time a year.

Clemson has a lot of transplanted fans and supporters. I personally know several and they are more dedicated to Clemson than many of our fans. Many people here at Clemson Downs are transplants and fell in love with the Tigers.

And, enjoyed your story about why you followed Usc football..and to be honest (sent a Daughter there & Son to CU) I’ve enjoyed attending FB games there too (First time was for the “last” Big Thursday game in 1959 which Clemson was forced to play every year from 1897 by legislature) due to friendships, caboose party invites & large vocal crowds/fans that enjoy their team as much as any.

Got a new co-worker that recently moved here from Washington (state). Huge Husky fan. Been here about 8 months. Around August he asked if I could get him a Tiger paw sticker for his car. He said he would always be a Husky first, but needed a local team. His comment to me was, “I am amazed at the pure stupidity of Gamecock fans!” He’s #AllIn now

On the potential way NFL fans tend not to be college fans....
There seem to be big exceptions. Michigan and MSU don't seem troubled by the Lions. TOSU has a huge fanbase despite the pro teams in Cleveland. The state of Texas has a huge college fanbase despite both Dallas and Houston having NFL teams. LSU has always been bigger than the Saints. Florida is full of pro teams and yet college football is big in much of the state. Atlanta has the Falcons but makes an claim to being the center of the world of college football. Add all that up and it seems to take away from the reasons some give for the prominence of college football in the South.
The Gamecocks have been mediocre for decades, yet Columbia remains a Gamecock town. I get that for natives; it makes no sense to me that transplants from the north would become Gamecock fans. That fact might be driven by the type of people with no connection to the city but nevertheless move to Columbia.

I too live in the Midlands and am amazed by the shortsightedness of transplants. During a year of post-graduate study at UofSuck, decades ago, the Midwestern and Yankee students would rig radio reception to get their college games if remotely possible from our dorm and we would go to WBS to full for the GC team just to have something to do Saturdays. When the Clemson game came I used my student ticket and pulled for the Tigers and it was that simple. USCe has lots of transplant students who like the weather, the location (mountains or beach in one direction) and the hospitality. The international students have no clue about the rivalry either.
The military community from Ft. Jackson often becomes a support group of UofSuck, but not always. The smart ones figure it out, especially now that Clemson is a nationally respected program. It is quite interesting to see the number of Tiger paws and flags displayed over the last five years as compared to the two previous decades. As long as Dabo keeps winning the number of Clemson fans and supporters in the Midlands will continue to grow! We just have to hope Muscrap doesn't get fired in order to maintain an edge.
Go Tigers!

They see the regular fans and say to themselves " Here's my chance to be in the 1% " . Drop that Ohio State gear , put on some garnet and go right to the top of the food chain in Columbia . If you're wondering why someone might switch allegiance to the Coots , it's because its easy to shine above all the pre-established bottom-dwellers that grew up on it .

People by nature want to fit in when arriving in a new area.
The people from the states as far away as you mentioned probably don't realize what a stupid decision they are making by boarding a ship that's been sinking for 125 years.
The school in Columbia is good at bailing water out of the main boat and pouring it into the life boats.
It makes the sinking ship look better to ignorant people.
They don't realize that once the main ship sinks the lifeboats will be long sunk and there will be nothing left to save them.
