Coach Swinney & Coach Ford Records at Clemson Very Close

Playing more games these days but comparing 9.5 years of Coach Swinney to 11 years of Coach Ford looks like this:
Coach Ford 96-29-4 .760 5 ACC Titles 1 Natl Championship
Coach Swinney 101-30 .771 4 ACC Titles 1 Natl Championship
Two different eras. Two different styles. Two great coaches. Two winners. Go Tigers!

Probably, but the 'would have' is why Swinney is the best

leader in Clemson history and will finish his career as one of the best in NCAA history. Swinney pursues a goal from the bottom up, building buy-in for the details at all levels so everyone is always pulling in the same direction. Ford was more top down, willing to alienate people to pursue his vision of how a goal was to be pursured. He alienated the wrong people.

That is revisionist history. That is not how it went down.

wins and losses or recruiting stuff, and certainly not fan or donor support.
At the time it happened entire libraries were written about what happened, and no one knew then or knows now for sure except two men - and heck, maybe they aren't too clear about it themselves - but we know it wasn't record or recruiting. And that is my point. With Swinney its all about buy-in on direction and principles, and he is second to none at getting it.
I am not saying it was all, or even mostly, Ford's fault; I just said we don't know what happened. But we can know what is very unlikely to happen with Swinney, and that is a disconnect between the program's and the Admin's directions. For that and several other reasons, and with no disrespect to Ford, who is a legend for a reason, Swinney will leave as the best leader we had in the program.

I appreciate what Coach Ford did at Clemson, but you have to consider that the schedule he faced was nowhere near as difficult as what Swinney had to play. None of the teams in the ACC during Ford last several years finished the season ranked. The Gamecocks during more half of Swinney's seasons were stronger than they ever were during Ford's time.

Max Lennon was terrified that the 1990 team would win the NC

with Danny as coach.
He wanted to de-emphasize athletics at Clemson and succeeded for a while. Another football championship would have stopped him in his tracks. There were issues with Coach Ford but they could have been worked out. In his tiny mind, though, getting rid of Danny was Job 1.

Almost sounds like a new thread here: What CU president signed your diploma, and who do you wish it had been? (Bill Atchley, but a couple of years earlier or later would have been RC Edwards or Walter Cox.)

Danny is growing pot.

That endears him to me even more. I love the man and appreciate what he's given and done for us. I'm not sure I'd ever say we had a better coach now than then, nope, not even if I believed it.
None has given more than Coach Frank or done more either. He worked tirelessly for us throughout much of his life and poured the very foundation on which Danny and Dabo have built. So no, wouldn't say there's a better coach than him either.
Some things just don't need to be said and picking out our best coach is a divisive waste of time and emotions, ihmo.

Perfect illustration as to why people need to appreciate what we are currently experiencing instead of being negative about a 3* recruit or complaining about our QB situation. We could easily be around the corner from 20 years of Hatfield, West, Bowden (please lord no!!!!)
