Even Notre Dame is using the portal. It comes off as just plain stubbornness to prove a point that makes absolutely no sense.

The way I see it is that the portal is being used by Clemson players but not by Dabo. If a Clemson player enters the portal, then Dabo should use the portal to fill a needed position. Portal for thee but not for me is pretty dumb.

It's bigger than that with Dabo. He firmly believes that he knows more: More than Saban, more than Smart, more than Day, Harbaugh, Riley, Smith at Oregon State, Sark, Norvell,####, even Deion. Add that to the fact that he has surrounded himself with inexperienced coaches that are former players who salivate like Pavlov's dog at his every utterance - and you have the classic maniacal despot that can't be challenged. He's wrong, he knows he's wrong but to admit it is to admit weakness.

If we routinely find ourselves stuck with players who aren’t difference makers, that suggests a problem with talent evaluation, a problem with player development, or both.
If Dabo insists on not using the portal, we better be REALLY good at recruiting and REALLY good at developing players.
How’s that working out for us these last few years?

Who cares where they came from? There’s no evidence that this refusing to optimize the portal opportunities is working. The exact opposite actually. I can’t think of even a single program, in all major college sports, that has Dabo’s attitude towards the portal. It’s just bizarre.

Nailed it. I could easily live with that as a program standard, but when you combine with the amount of money we are investing in the coaching staff, then it falls apart. Time to pick a lane, pay Dabo less and use that money in places with higher cultural or financial ROI. Or he needs to adapt roster management strategies to be more competitive.

The goal seems to be that we will strengthen our high school recruiting by not taking transfers. The issue is that teams can not avoid the down year by getting transfers. Thus, giving them an advantage. It is awful. The transfer rule is just as responsible as the NIL in the downward spiral of college football. I don’t mind the NIL if used the way it was intended. Which we all knew would not be the case. It is not good for the game as a whole. And my goodness the tampering that is going on.
Imagine the NFL with no tampering rules and annual free agency for every player. This is college football. Rules are going to have to be put in place.

The most important aspect of high school recruiting is winning. And winning on the level we have won creates a recruiting juggernaut. But it will be hard to keep winning at that level when strictly following the old rules that everyone else is now free of. I appreciate how Dabo views the commitment, but I think he’s gonna have to find some kind of balanced approach on this.

That’s 100% a coaching issue.
But I do think some portal additions could’ve possibly helped us overcome bad coaching. Those portal additions also seem necessary to get us back to elite status as a program.

I agree that we could probably delve into the portal and get rid of some of the space holders on the team, but the problem here is not lack of talent. We have 56 former blue chip (4-5 star) recruits, compared to Duke's TWO. The problem doesn't lie in talent acquisition at all. I fear the main problem lies in the development of said blue chip recruits. Nobody gets better when they come to Clemson anymore. Dabo definitely needs to do some soul searching about portal usage, but I believe that this programs biggest weakness is in the position coaches and developmental staff.

Clemson isn't run like a pro team or even like any other top tier program in the country. Dabo rewards loyalty, to a fault. If you really think 18-22 year olds don't realize this and they don't try to manipulate the process and "find the angles" let's swap stories about college, fraternities and "bankrolled" tests and shared notes and textbooks.

that he wasn't going to recruit 1-and-done players anymore. I remember Greg Paulus starting for Duke at PG for a year or two. Those were a couple of the worst Duke teams of my lifetime.
He did eventually win a title when those guys were SRs (Scheyer, Singler), but the preceeding years when he was trying to coach up those guys while at a massive talent disadvantage compared to UNC, Kansas, etc were pretty rough. We whipped them a couple times with Booker and company.
Then in 2011 he abandoned that experiment and brought in Kyrie Irving.

the summer. TCU had an NFL caliber WR looking to transfer when Riley left TCU. IT seemed like if we ever were going to do it then that would have been the best time to pull the trigger. And i thought they were.

Dabo knows he is untouchable at Clemson. With what he's accomplished, he will be the coach as long as HE wants to be. The guy at F$U doesn't have that status. He is doing whatever it takes to WIN NOW.
Dabo is loyal to a fault to the high school players he has signed. Unless you get in trouble, he won't cut you based on ability. Some of these other coaches have no problem cleaning out the bottom of the roster for a better player.
For Dabo's way to work, the loyalty has to work both ways and it doesn't anymore. With the rule changes, kids can leave now whenever they want, and they have. The other problem is some of the hires Dabo has made like the DC are just weird.

All In Portal Proposal

It would work this way:
At the end of EACH SEASON, ALL PLAYERS (including incoming freshmen) on ALL TEAMS are AUTOMATICALLY entered into the portal.
Portal schedules a Portal Draft Day (PDD) in the same manner as NFL Fantasy League.
No teams have “locks” on returning players.
NOW, this LEVELS the playing field for everyone. Hey, the players and fans wanted this, so let’s go “ALL IN” with the portal.
Every season is a team roster rebuilding effort anyway. Think of the SAVINGS in recruiting cost, time, & effort.
A true FREE-FOR-ALL for EVERYONE.
Plus, the PDD would be a MASSIVE ANNUAL MEDIA EVENT that the fans would ABSOLUTELY LOVE.
Think of the success of NFL Fantasy League.
In the spirit of Kaffee (Tom Cruise) in ”A Few Good Men”, this portal proposal just takes us all EXACTLY where we want to be…
Yeah, I know you think I am just being sarcastic here, but seriously, there is some merit worth considering here.
