Question about Scott's catch in the end zone
Jan 16, 2016, 3:15 PM
|
|
Where the bama player knocked the ball out and the play called incomplete. This was not discussed or tallked about at all. Why is it not a touch down? If you watch the play again, you will see Scott with position of the ball and knee down and then the DB knocked the ball away. This happened is a split second that it does appear as incomplete but slow motion shows otherwise.
So what am I missing here about rules regarding this play?

Unless he makes a "football move," such as turning upfield or juking or whatever, then he has to control the ball through contact with the ground. This he did not do.

I guess this different than running the ball in where just the tip of the ball has to go in

I thought that he did control the ball. Wondered why that wasn't replayed

But it could have easily been called pass interference. He hit Scott's arm before the ball arrived.

Danny Ford got suspended for a game for questioning a call

... where a Maryland receiver "possessed" the ball for a nano-second at the goal line before losing control and dropping it.
It was scored a TD for The Terps because they said the guy had possession as he crossed the plane of the goal line.
The rules must have changed sine then to disallow Scott's catch.

The ground can't cause a fumble, but it can cause an incompletion. This is a rule that needs to be looked at

It is the rule. I don't like the rule, but it is the rule. He has to maintain possession all the way through. In my opinion, this "new catch rule" is a load of garbage that was invented by a bunch of non-athlete, bean counter, scum bag lawyer types that couldn't catch a football if you nailed it to their chest with a railroad spike.
2 hands on the ball, then 2 feet down, then butt hits ground.......any other play is over at that point....but on a catch with no moves, the play continues until the player comes up with the ball.
This specific rule has 2 major problems. 1. It is INCONSISTENT with all other rules as to when the ball is dead. 2. It is highly subjective as to when is the play over. "Must maintain possession through the catch". Great!!!!! Exactly when is that?
Garbage rule, written by lawyers. You can tell it was written by lawyers because after you read it you still don't know what it means.
