It’s ironic we had this thread. A neighbor took me for a ride in his Tesla earlier. I would agree. You can’t get close to one without being recorded. It kinda make me feel even more like this is something less prevalent than the internet leads us to believe.

I see a lot of Teslas in Greenville and none have been keyed. I am sure this has happened some but I think it might be exagerated on the Internet. Kinda like transgender people, as much as is written about them you'd think we would all meet one daily but in 60 years I have only meet one for sure and he was just a dude wearing a dress at the time. I also knew he was a dude wearing a dress.
I think we all probably would admit Musk is an unusual dude, like Zuckerberg. Whether they each align with our thinking or not, both are unusual. The same can be said for a lot of people we read about. Outrageousness and flamboyance get clicks. Showing up to work every day and raising a family doesn't get the page clicks.

Trump, Biden, Hegseth, Musk, Harris, Waltz, Walz, AOC, MTG ... the lot of them, because I don't trust authority figures all that well.
Even the best-intentioned patriots and public servants are at the mercy of forces well beyond their control. They may have the courage of their convictions, but, quite often they're unable to implement lasting policy because ... forces.
I like that Musk is trying to do something that should've been done decades ago: eliminate waste, fraud and abuse in the fed and restore at least some semblance of accountability to the people.
For the first time in a long time when I write that very large check to the IRS this year despite the best efforts of my accountant to minimize my tax liability, I will at least feel a little less like I'm throwing MY money down a black, unaccountable, bureaucratic hole.
But that's just me.
I can understand why many dislike and distrust these folks. And I understand the suspicion Musk, in particular, engenders in those who don't like what he's doing, what he stands for, what he represents.

People are people. When they get scared and feel powerless, they tend to reach for something that makes them feel a little less scared, a little more empowered.
In this case, it's individual poltroons reaching for their keys and applying said keys to the sides of vehicles.
Imagine how sad and emasculated one must have to feel to think that keying another man's car is a true power move.

I am grateful for the work DOGE is doing. A bankrupt America serves no one's interests. We are too vital to the world's economy and stability.
I wish that more people in government would see beyond the soundbites and think critically about why reducing waste (and fraud) might be the most political advantageous outcome for both parties, not just the GOP.

Aristotle saw oligarchy as the perversion of aristocracy. The notion that ONLY what happened at the fall of the soviet union constitutes on oligarch is asinine.
As for Musk? He absolutely fits the definition of an oligarch. He's used his unfathomable wealth, largely generated by combinations of apartheid South Africa and US government grants, to buy himself an appointment in the federal government. An appointment to do a job that he is unqualified and lacks the experience or expertise to do.

I use the Soviet Union as it's the most recent example most of us might draw on.
Musk, who founded or co-founded the various companies that have made him a billionaire, is not an oligarch.
He didn't snap up state-owned assets for pennies on the dollar. He may have executive authority over who does what at DOGE, but, he still answers to the President, who of course answers to the people. Oligarchs have no such checks on their power.
Sorry I don't agree with you. But I take your point. I can see where Musk's almost supranationalistic approach to geopolitics comes off as oligarchical and scary to many, given his enormous wealth and now, thanks to his ownership of X (or his AI company that now owns X), his ability to steer the international narrative.
But anyone over the age of 20 understands that most of America's billionaires, if not all of them, haven't been the innovators/founders we're told they are. Most pulled the levers of power and lobbied and probably cut a few corners to get where they are today.
Musk is no exception. But that doesn't make him an oligarch.
