that do not remain,"All In" for their careers to their original teams. Maybe it was too harsh. But, I am part of the older crowd and personally am a loyal and more of a stay the course individual. You see,I owned my own real estate company for 8 years and only left it because, well, I had a partner that tried to do everything he could to impune my character and reputation. And frankle, that is an understatement. Those who know me personally know the full details.I walked out and went to a major real estate company and stayed there for 16 years, leaving only when the broker, who I greatly admired and still do, changed franchises in the middle of the night without any consultation with his agents. I then went to eXp where I have remained for the last 11 years or so. This May, Mrs. Spud and I will celebrate our 39th anneversary. My parents, and four of my aunts and uncles were married for over 50 years each, some made it to 60. I have 8 cousins who have all been married over 35 years to the same spouse. So,that is where I come from and it just rubs me the wrong way the way SOME players seem to have a ZERO level of commitment.

No offense to any of them, but commitment is important in my opinion....

Years married. both our sets of parents are still married in her parents case or were married til death did part in my parents case. So I’m a committed type person too. I definitely think there are many who aren’t. But to be frank, there are a lot of coaches and fan bases and schools who aren’t committed to their players either. For instance Kirby basically yanking a scholarship a week before NSD conceivably leaving a kid to scramble. And why I think it’s the nature of the beast, not really another choice, and that BV never said specifically he’d be here this year, BV was on the recruiting trail a week before he left for Oklahoma. And he’s one of the honest ones. Imagine coming to play for Riley and he’s gone to USC. As far as fan bases how quickly did we turn on DJ. What a 19 year old who had a crappy year? But people turned it into a character issue which there is no other evidence of. agree a lot of kids aren’t committed and don’t understand all in. But it’s a lot to ask the kids to be loyal when the “adults in the room” are anything but.

While I’m generally frustrated with the state of the transfer portal and the “highest bidder” situation it can create, I do understand an athlete wanting to and being able to transfer. These kids want to see the field.

In the OP being a college player was compared to being in the work force. Well, how would you respond if at your agency you were relegated to doing office work to support the team while another agent took all the listings? The other agent had a better history of closing sales so it was justified and helped the brokerage overall. No hard feelings but thats the way the brokerage works. Would you stay?

Like it or not, most college football players think they can make it to NFL and that is their goal. If they aren’t on the field, that can’t happen and I get it that they at least want that shot.

Partner, Realtors jump ship about like some of these players

Jan 29, 2022, 10:12 AM

do. But,if you look around, most of the really successful ones have been with their company a long time. I know the best ones in Powdersville have been with the same company for many years. One reason Realtors change so often is because it doesn't really cost anything to move.I guess they are kind of like these players in that they don't have very much invested where they are. And there is ALWAYS,ALLLLLWAYS a broker calling you to make a jump. I assume, somebody is calling all these players nowdays to make a move.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Right. Except for 2 or 3 high profile players, if you need

to jump to see the field, you're not going to the NFL. If you can't see the field where you are, you're not an NFL player.

What a player turns down by jumping is, imo, the worst bet imaginable. An athlete at Clemson gets:
- A degree in any major he wants, and grad studies if he redshirts and graduates on time..
- Academic help and tutoring no one else gets. One almost can't not succeed in the classroom.
- Food/nutrition at professional level, plus spending money.
- The maturation process of working with a Swinney staff/program.
- Career planning/internships no one else gets.
- All doors to everything are open. Intros to everybody who is anybody, all who will give you a chance.
- A forever network of the who's who in the state and beyond.

Some of the things on that list are beyond value, can't be bought.

I, on the other hand, approached graduation broke, anonymous, and with no idea where my first job would come from. Would I spend the training/practice hours to get all that at no cost? In a heartbeat. To turn that down on the hope of a little more playing time is going all in to draw to an inside straight. All NIL and portal seems to have accomplished is to give a lot of money to 1% of the players while causing many of the rest to lose focus on what is being offered them.

I think that is what Dabo meant when he said, "If I have to pay players, I'll quit". If the way Dabo provides the above list is no longer what it takes to attract the players he wants, he'll quit. That is what he does, nothing else. Some players have shown they don't value it.

Completely agree. It was disgraceful at best. I can’t believe some of the things that were said about him. Would have made me think twice about where I am and seriously question this family that is supposed to be All In with me.

I know it was not the majority but it was enough to feel like it was. I can’t imagine how his family felt.

We are better than that and we as a fan base need to count our blessings.

Might not be in my life time but looking more every year
college sports will have a draft system
Some are already looking at them being players more than students

Sort of like someone taking a job and then saying they were not

I didn’t see your post yesterday, but everyone’s allowed to have an opinion, and I think you da man!

It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few years, but I would not be surprised if after another two or three years of turnstile portal chaos, some kids and parents begin to realize the value of commitment, stability and a college degree and we see less transfer portal activity and things swing back towards where we were in the past.

I don’t think will ever go back to the low level of transfer activity we had pre-portal. But smart kids and smart parents are gonna start realizing that most of the kids from power five programs that enter the portal do not find a home at a power five program. I read that on the Internet so it must be true. Not good odds of being in the small percentage of college football players that make it to the NFL. And very few of them are upgrading to a better academic institution.

Bottom line is, unless you are among the rare few, Jahmyr Gibbs to Bama (NFL resume) or Kane Paterson to Vandy (academics), the portal is often not a good decision.

With the portal being a bad decision for so many of these kids, maybe it will serve as a learning experience in though learn about commitment early in their life.

Either way, this is America, they can make their own decisions, sink or swim, reap what you sow, eat what you kill. Good luck

Seen an article with Charlie Ward talking about FSU and their NIL and he thought that kids did not want to compete. Just rather move on to what seems like a better situation. I understand both sides to a degree but it sure would be nice to have athletes that wanted to play for Clemson 3-4 years, and had the same desire I feel that I put into wanting them to win.

Each of you have some great observations and I am a 100% loyal person. I believe when you make a commitment you stay the course, good, bad or anything else. These young kids do not understand the time and effort these coaches and other teammates are putting into them to get them ready for the NFL or life with a very small percentage ever making it to the NFL. Even there are some that do not know the value of a degree from Clemson. I never played any time of ball at Clemson but that degree opened a lot of doors for me.

If they stay the course at Clemson, it will get them closer to their dream of playing in the NFL but fhat degree it will have them ready for the “game of life.”

Hang in their fellows, you will be better for it. “There is something special in these Hills.”

Spud - I am right there with you. We are coming up on 38 years married. We met as next door neighbors in the old prefabs near the P and A building in our freshman year in 1980. My parents were married till death separated them. Same for my dad’s siblings, only one of which is still alive and they’ve been married 75 years. But I’m surrounded by just the opposite. My wife’s parents divorced. All my and my wife’s siblings have been divorced as have most of my nieces and nephews and cousins. I see the impact on their kids and although I don’t know all the details sometimes I just wonder how much effort they really put into trying to keep it together. I know I had a serious conversation with the young man that asked for permission to marry my daughter and I think he gets it. But unfortunately I think that’s more of the exception than the rule these days. Now I do put a higher level of importance on commitment when it comes to marriage than I do a job or something like a scholarship offer but the same idea applies just to a lesser degree. I worked for one company for 22 years and probably averaged 55 hours or so a week. So when I made the decision to leave I believe they got their money’s worth. It’s just become too easy and too acceptable for people to quit on everything these days. End of rant.

Now I will qualify my comments by saying that I supported DJ all year and even defended him on here. I will not boo a Clemson player or coach. If one decides to move on I wish them luck and move on myself. We never know what is happening in someone else’s personal life or something n their mind so they are entitled to do as they wish. I may not always like it but I definitely try to keep my comments positive. Disparaging someone else especially a kid is usually totally unnecessary and doesn’t do anyone any good.

Was Dabo Swinney disloyal when he quit AIG realty after two years of employment? This was after someone took a flyer on him and hired him into an industry in which he had no experience, spent money training him, and treated him well.

Loyalty is a great and admirable thing but it’s my opinion that with our student athletes it’s unfair to label kids who transfer as “disloyal”.

Mutual commitment needs to be both ways and embrace the needs of both parties. ( Dabo is excellent at honoring scholarships for 4 years.)

Some people thrive on change and will flourish in a dynamic environment. Some people are most comfortable in stable lifestyles. I worked for 30 years and retired football the same company. I have been married over 40 years. I can understand those that like change but a 3-4 year scholarship commitment is relatively short. There’s a lot of living after 22 and having a good educational foundation (I.e. a college degree) will be beneficial for most throughout their lives. The transfer portal could potentially diminish graduation rates.

I see too many players transferring because of not getting playing time they haven't earned. Many of these don't get it at the next stop either. A Junior, senior or grad that has put in the work and been a team player and has been overshadowed, deserves the chance to play somewhere else and I have been complimentary and pulled for their success. The only exceptions being those that transfer to a school we play or have made negative comments. A few have hurt us due to depth issues but not too many.

I think we have had more recent transfers that have not gotten the playing time they want or not developed into contributers that are bailing too soon. This goes to their not being All In but the portal and NIL is a problem in this as well. This has and will have an effect on depth.

There are a bunch of good points being made. Not going to argue about loyalty, it is what it is. There wasn't a problem when they had to sit out a year. Now they can transfer and get paid. Alabama needed a RB so they go and get the kid from GA Tech. You know there was money involved. The question is can it be fixed. Unfortunately the courts will block some of the things that can be done. I just hope they can find a solution before they ruin the greatest sport in the world.

And also those who transfer before graduation. But I feel like those that graduate early and transfer for their final year have fulfilled their commitment and Clemson has fulfilled theirs as well earning a degree.

Me. Spud,

Your post made me think and I think a different career/business perspective might help ease or possibly change your POV on “commitment” to a school (not the Misses as I myself have been married to my amazing wife for over 16 years and am at the ripe age of 37).

Back in your day and my Father’s Day (who played WR for the Tigers in the late 60’s), the NFL was not really the goal for 95% of football players, their education would lead to better paying jobs in the business/real world. Really only the top 1% COULD make good money, not great, in the NFL. Being on a team was a privilege and more like an athletic fraternity with your brothers and networking life long relationships.

In today’s world, a bench player, just making an NFL roster, even as a practice player could set you up for life, the money is so huge and it’s more like finding your career than it was in the older days. So finding an opportunity to chase a dream or just do what you know/love/all you think you can do, while it’s not always realistic, it’s much more of a focus to get to the professional ranks, so the kids will do all they can to even get an opportunity just to make a roster and if they are not playing at school a, they transfer to b. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong but what if your professor in college told you two years into tour major that they were not going to allow you to even try and finish that major and you must choose another… not even giving you an opportunity to graduate and try to pursue the career of your dreams, but if you transfer to another school you would be allowed to finish that major and that was the only option.

It got me thinking, and gave me a new perspective as I thought about it, so thank you— this is what I came up with, I hope it helps ease your mind about some of the transfer issues/character of today’s athlete. They just want an opportunity.

Longshot?
For sure!!!

Compared to getting that kind of money with a BS degree?
