Prior to the current Furman Paladins, Furman University was known as the Christian Knights. After realizing this abbreviated to F-U-_-K they promptly changed to current.

That is a long standing myth and not true. From the Furman website:
Furman University’s official athletic mascot is a knight on a horse and the school’s intercollegiate athletic teams are nicknamed “Paladins.” Prior to 1961 this was not the case as the baseball team was known as the “Hornets,” the football team the “Hurricane,” and the basketball team the “Paladins.” First used by a Greenville sportswriter in the 1930s to describe Furman’s basketball team, “Paladins” became the official nickname of all of the school’s intercollegiate athletic teams following a vote of the student body on September 15, 1961.

Although I am a Clemson grad, I went to graduate school at Furman. The president of the university at the time would lead the students in cheer at football games with FU one time, FU two times, FU all the time! Of course, the students loved it. It was all in fun.

I worked in the athletic dept. there from 87-91. The president at the time, John Johns, would come down from the presidents box at the end of the third quarter and lead the students in a cheer. He would take the mic from the mic man and say, fu one time, fu two times, fu allll the time! It was a big hit. Not sure if the current president has kept up the tradition or not.
