Anybody believe me??
Sep 14, 2022, 8:37 PM
|
|
Ok guys. Not football related but I gotta talk to somebody. My daughter is the assistant manager at Edisto Island state park and lives on oyster tow lane that leads to the learning center and boat landing. My wife and I are on vacation and visiting this weekend. After dinner most nights, my Golden Retriever,Kolsch, and I will walk down to the boat landing and back. Tonight we encountered some company along the way. We walked into the road to the learning center to take the trail to the boat landing and came within 15 feet of a mountain lion. I swear, a mountain lion. No not a bobcat. A mountain lion that stood taller than Kolsch. He stood his territory as we backed away. Got back to house quickly, got my daughter and went back in jeep looking. No sightings. I swear a mountain lion. Looked it up on internet and yes a mountain lion. I was scared to death and back away did not get s picture because phone was at home. Anybody had a situation like this? That cat was not going to give up his territory.

Two reasons I don’t believe this tall tale:
1) No one leaves their phone at home these days.
2) After admittedly being scared to death and lucky to escape this killer cat, does the OP call authorities or animal control? No!! They go home and throw their daughter in the car and goes back looking for the monstrous feline. If I was the OP’s daughter I would watch my back.

########. A family friend when I was younger had a horse disemboweled by a mountain lion in SC (near the mountains). He saw it and reported it to DNR, telling them he'd kill it if he saw it again. They said "You can't shoot it, they're protected." Big cats are nomadic and have enormous ranges. They have them in Florida, you really think it's impossible for them to get up here rarely? That's stupid.

There used to be a manatee

That for numerous years made its way all the way up to Charleston Harbor from Florida. They used to report it on the local news. Haven’t heard anything about it recently.
Next time you’re on I 95 heading south you’ll start seeing dead armadillos the closer you get to the Savannah River. They use the bridge to cross the river.

False! I too had a close (10ft) encounter with one at a summer camp I worked at right outside of Pickens. Beautiful creature and super glad that when I walked up on it, that it decided to go off deeper into the woods rather than eat me. And yes long tail and wayyy bigger than a bobcat.

SC eradicated the cougar years ago and they are no longer in our State. The Eastern Cougar was large and up to 200lbs. There habitat no longer exists so they evidently moved on. No I don't believe you seen a Cougar which resembles a Mountain Lion. It must have been a big a$$ dog.

Wouldn’t doubt it. A couple of years ago, my son and I were out walking on the #1 fairway of the Plantation Course late in the evening and saw a large cat slipping into the woods. Didn’t get a long look and I assumed it was a bobcat. I definitely saw one run across Highway 61 in front of me one night several years back when I was driving home at night from Augusta. Thought it was a deer at first until I saw it stretch out running like a cat does and saw a tail. So yeah, they live in the Lowcountry, no matter what some may say.

100% correct, saw one deer hunting in lowcountry several years ago. Sand colored and slowly walking away from me about 75 yards out. To see it’s face I yelped, it turned and undeniably was a big cat.
Second incident a few springs ago I came across a set of large distinct tracks in soft mud. Looked just like our Paw - no claws marks (which are an indicator of a dog).

I do believe you.
My parent’s neighbors caught one on camera in Tennessee. I remembered mention of this at the time because the Eastern Cougar is extinct.
Check out this article. A ranger told us this around the same time.
“Well-known naturalist Dennis Chastain of Pickens says there’s no doubt that there are cougars (pumas/mountain lions) in the woods and wild places of South Carolina. But they aren’t true Eastern cougars.
“There are cougars out there, but they are all without exception the progeny of released Western cougars,” he said.
Here’s how that came about: People go to a pet store and buy a baby cougar.
“It’s a chick magnet, it’s a cool thing,” Chastain said. “Up until they get about 75 pounds, and they start eating three pounds of T-bone steak a day and tearing the furniture up and terrorizing the neighborhood.”
So then what do you do?
You may try donating it to a zoo, but not many zoos are looking for cougars.
So you go for a ride with the big cat and let him loose somewhere in deer country – which is anywhere in the state.”
https://www.independentmail.com/story/opinion/columnists/2018/01/31/dont-shoot-eastern-cougars-if-you-see-one-because-its-illegal-and-they-extinct/1078580001/

I believe you. There are sightings all over SC (look it up). Sightings are one thing, breeding populations are another. You’re talking about an animal that might travel 20 miles a night, that means they can be quite far from “home” in pretty short order.
I worked with a guy 25 years ago, who owned a full grown Cougar. He swore that it was so fast and powerful, that it could run the walls of his living room. That is….take a lap around the living room, touch nothing but the walls.

I don't doubt there are still mountain lions/cougars/panthers in SC but did you see the tail?
I saw your post below. The long tail says you saw one.

Wandering this far north in search of new territory. And yea that’s a mountain lion or cougar, and the Florida panther is a sub species of them.

A mountain lion would be considerably larger than your dog, especially in length. I agree with the poster at it being a Florida panther or as we say in the South, a "Long Tailed Cat". I have seen one and it was brindle in color. Was it a solid color or could you tell ?

Yes, I believe what you saw, those saying impossible are being short sighted. They require a lot of territory and as they have been protected for a long time it stands to reason that the increase requires the younger generations to move range. I know we have them in NC because I watched a local hunter call one in by accident while using a Predator call for coyotes. saw it on YouTube clear as day in the thermal. No mistaking what it was.

I’ll second that. Grandfather was a lifelong coon hunter and told me of 3 sightings in the Pee Dee swamp. Plenty of deer and now feral pigs to support a few big cats. Had a black bear in 5 points (Florence) about 12 years ago.

Walking anywhere at night without the right protection is putting your life in D A N G E R. There is a saying that I love, it's best to be caught with it (pistol) and don't need it, than to be caught without it and desperately need it. Being caught without personal protection in 2022 could be the cause of you, or a loved one to lose your life! ! ! ! !

I believe you. Many people doubt what they haven't seen with their own eyes.
I was a young boy in the early '60s and spent a lot of time in and around the Edisto River and adjacent swamp at Orangeburg..... loved to fish and hunt and often went alone. I told folks that there were alligators in Edisto Swamp, but they did not believe me. They all thought that alligators stopped at the Florida state line. I knew better, but it was frustrating trying to convince others back then. Now, they've migrated up to Virginia.
I also "discovered" bluefin tuna offshore of Morehead City, NC in the '80s and off Charleston inlet around 2005 (in fairly shallow water). Nobody wanted to believe those claims either.
It's amazing what is in the woods, swamps and oceans of the world.

Though nobody from SCDNR would ever believe your story, I do. I live near the midlands and we have "big cat" sightings, usually panthers (black or brown) (once again not bobcats) a few times a year. Most people erroneously assume that they have been eradicated. That could not be further from the truth. The first time I locked eyes with one was about five years ago and it was a less than pleasant experience. Also, before anybody might tell me that I have no clue what I'm looking at, I'm a wildlife biologist. I 100% believe that what you saw was a panther.

I do. I’ve attached a picture from a trail camera picture from this past spring in the upstate. You have to look closely because of the glare from the sun but this is a large cat with a long tail. It was at our hunt club. I was out there this weekend putting ropes and camo on my stands and saw several very large prints that looked more like a cat than a dog and definitely too big for a coyote. I also noticed a lot less coyote tracks than I have seen there the past few years which is not a bad thing. I will be keeping my eyes open and have a sidearm when headed to my stands.

of a Florida Mountain Lion. It is reasonable to believe what you saw was indeed a Mountain Lion. It could also have been one set free or escaped from a private exotic pet owner, or a cat recue. FYI..... Black Panthers are either Melanistic Jaguars or Melanistic Leopards.....which we do not have in SC, or anywhere close. There have never been any documented cases of Black Mountain Lions. Any confirmed sightings of such would be from the exotic trade being set free or escaped.

Deer and turkeys everywhere!
Was out on Johns Island a week ago and deer and turkeys everywhere!
Around 1900 deer were hunted almost to extinction in South Carolina but they were able to hide deep in the Lowcountry swamps and other areas across the state where hunters couldn’t get to them, but today we have more deer than ever thanks to landscaped lawns, flowerbeds, gardens, etc. and they have become a huge nuisance not to mention the number of wrecks cause.
Beavers, armadillos, wild boar, etc. are major problems across the state as well.
And of course South Carolina lakes and rivers have had game fish species decimation because of catfish released in our waterways from other states that are not native and invasive.
Not sure what the solution is to most of these problems, but I do know how DNR could help solve the deer problem! Unfortunately, even if they did relax the hunting restrictions do we have enough hunters to get things under control? The number of people deer hunting today is dramatically less than back in the 70s when I was a kid.
Unfortunately the quail population has been devastated by the loss of habitat and widespread use of pesticides and fire ants.

I grew up on Johns Island in the 60s and 70s and we very rarely saw deer and I never saw a turkey my entire childhood. I spent a lot of time in the woods squirrel and rabbit hunting so the opportunities were there. My brother and sisters still live in that piece of land and in the summer you frequently see 20-25 deer or 10-15 turkeys in the field next to them. Problem is there has been so much development around them I would not shoot a rifle there. I might take my crossbow there this fall….

How big is the property?

I’m sure you could use a shotgun with buckshot or maybe a slug.
Do you bow hunt in addition to the crossbow or just a crossbow?
When I was at Clemson in the 80s my two best friends from high school were on the football team and I spent a lot of time in the football dorm and it was crazy. There were guys that had snakes, cats, dogs, a couple of guys had pistols, at least one guy had a crossbow and another guy had this sophisticated blow dart contraption. It didn’t look like anything from the Amazon, lol, it was definitely not made out of bamboo, but a piece of aluminum with foam rubber in certain spots to hold it and had a mouthpiece to get more pressure when you blew and it had these crazy darts that could go a long way. It was very cool, but the crossbow was the coolest!
I have wanted to get one for a long time but just haven’t done it yet.
Is it legal to shoot deer with a crossbow? I thought I read somewhere that it’s not legal. Then again as a radical libertarian if I’m on my land I do pretty much what I want, especially when it comes to deer and turkeys because of how overpopulated they are.
I’m sure development is part of the problem, but I would also lay money on the fact that back then people hunted on Johns Island, which probably had a pretty big effect. And there probably weren’t anywhere near as many deer and turkey on Johns Island back then as today.

My brother has about 3 acres and the field next to him is about 5 acres. You could shoot a shotgun but I won’t just to be completely safe and to not bother the neighbors. There is a guy who has permission to hunt the field and he uses a rifle. I just don’t need a deer that bad. I hunt in the upstate on a 440 acre tract and get what I need there.
I tore my right bicep playing basketball about 2 years before I started archery hunting so I have never used a compound bow, just a crossbow. Almost every state, including SC now recognize crossbows as archery equipment and allow them during archery season. They are wicked. I’ve shot 6 or 7 deer with mine and all but one went about 60 yards and fell over. The one last year went about 125 yards. I was at Clemson from 80-84 and knew one of the football players from home and we used to play a lot of B-ball at Fike. We may have run into each other.

I hardly recognize the Clemson of our youth. So much has changed at the University and the town. Unfortunately, most of the change has not been good IMO, especially regarding the university!
I think a lot of what has changed with the town has been good from an economic standpoint, but even that has gone too far as home prices and everything else in the area have skyrocketed. Unfortunately Clemson has been like much of the south, especially the Carolinas, and growth has changed the area forever.
But that has nothing to do with the changes at the University. Those changes are internal and most of them have definitely not been for the better!
Interestingly enough, you were in school when there were quite a few significant changes as well. In high school I spent quite a bit of time at Clemson and noticed major changes right before my freshman year in 84. I don’t think any of those changes were improvements either. No more being out on the Johnstone ledges, no more Bengal Ball, Significant changes to open containers & alcohol on campus and a few other changes related to the drinking age going from 18 to 21, which I still vociferously disagree with!

We lived in South Florida for a few years and we went to several Panthers hockey games. One time they brought a live Florida Panther on a leash out on the ice for the National Anthem. Somebody didn’t think this through because they shot fireworks off for the “rockets red glare” and that cat started doing flips and cartwheels trying to get away and the poor gal holding the leash got pulled off the mat and went down on the ice trying to control it. I don’t think anyone got hurt but it was a pretty scary situation.

It was around twilight, still light enough outside to see the black cat standing in the middle of a dirt road I passed on some backroads around Black Tom Road (if anyone knows it). It was a brief glimpse I caught of it, and it could've been a very large feline of another kind, I suppose, but I swear it looked to me to be all black and BIG.

Yes, they told us back in the seventies at CU (Wildlife Biology) that there were no bears in SC. We have them in our neighborhood about 15 miles from Clemson and there was a fox in my yard the other day and bobcats are also around in the neighborhood, occasionally. Armadillos are common and deer all over the place. We did see a mountain lion in the wild at the Grand Canyon, but not around here yet.

When Jerry Richardson was awarded The Carolina Panthers they had a big party in downtown Spartanburg. They had a huge Jet Black Panther in a big cage on wheels. That thing was awesome. I think they borrowed it from the small Hollywild zoo in North Spartanburg.

Contact DEpt. of natural resources so they can put cameras in the area to verify. Last I heard they had never verified a report of a mountain lion in this state although I have heard other reports of sightings. I suspect there may be a few in our state but have no proof
