I am putting this here for discussion. I have thoughts but I want to see where everyone else is with this data versus on-field results.

He was a walk-on. He chose Clemson. Clemson didn't choose him.

Two thoughts. First, the receivers from 2014-2020 had better running backs around them and caught balls from our 2 generational quarterbacks. Second, nothing can be said about this year's class yet and only one year from last year's class.

that first year of DJU where we finished like #85 offense

Sep 8, 2023, 9:31 AM

out of 115 teams was a killer and still having repercussions today. He had 9 Touchdown passes at years end. One of the worst Clemson passing offenses since i've been alive. Those were Rob Spence type offenses. Yet with a top 5 talent at QB. You can't get that unlucky. But to give credit we somehow eeked out 10 wins so it was a success at years end.But that year there were alot of parts on that offense that were just not firing. Which is why this past season was the worst WR ranking recruiting class in 15 years.

I really think it comes down to getting a superstar back at WR and/or at QB. We've got a decent base but no star. Championships are won with superstars. Our best teams feature a couple superstars and base of above average talent that elevated b/c of the magnitude of the games we played in.

This is kind of along my thoughts.

Other than years with high attrition, we tend to recruit 2 WRs. It looks like we pick one guy we believe we can develop and one guy as a top end talent.

The mother of all outliers is that 2011 class with Peake, Watkins, Seckinger and Humphries. We got the 2nd and 4th ranked WRs along with 2 development guys. Watkins was Watkins. Humphries was a massive outlier that was a harbinger for Renfrow. Seckinger moved to TE eventually. Peake was solid but not what he was expected to be.

Notable classes are 2008, 2009 and 2012 which didn't provide any substantial contributors.

In every other class from 2010 until 2018. There was at least one substantial contributor.

2019 and 2020 were recruiting/development misses.

The 2021 class is a mash unit.

The jury is still out on 2022 and 2023.

This is what the new NIL era looks like. We can no longer compete to get these players.

Programs like Clemson are done without changes to the rules. The downward spiral of CFB has begun and it is happening quickly.

WOW!! I didn't realize how many total whiffs we had at the WR spot over the years. I spotted a couple of errors in the years but makes no difference. The thing that stands out to me are the classes of 2019, 2020 and 2021 being 100% misses. How in the world can that happen. We are seeing the results now for these failures. Thanks for posting this.

I don’t think the wide receivers have necessarily been misses. I think it’s coaching and confidence. Since Jeff Scott left the wide receivers have gotten worse each year. I think the two DJ years hurt confidence as well and then a step back in coaching. I don’t think Grisham is a bad guy or a bad coach and honestly I don’t know how or what will fix it other than building trust in the Qb with the receivers and getting their confidence back.

This is the other path I am on. It took 4 years of recruiting and development to put us where we are today. The painful part of college football is can take years to erode a talent base, both coaches and players. People will say look at the portal. I'll post later about the portal numbers around the nation but the portal doesn't hold the answer/solution that many believe, yet.

The questions as fans and the AD at Clemson that you have to ask are do you believe Dabo can/will fix it? And, do you have the patience for it?

In the 2021 class Keon Carpenter was the 58th ranked WR. Looking back, who would you drop from this class to have recruited him? That's assuming he is a Clemson culture fit.
