Transfer portal

Sep 25, 2022, 7:12 AM

We lost both starting CBs.

Daylen Everette decommitted.

Sheridan lining up to be the only returning CB with legit experience.

We could have brought in an experienced CB from the portal. Instead, we signed a high school project that needs a couple of years to develop.

After 4 games, it’s obvious that was a poor decision.

I hope Sheridan gets back healthy this week. And I hope Mike Reed can coach the young guys up.

Dabo will have to go into the portal sooner or later(hopefully sooner) whether he likes it or not. You cannot allow yourself to be at a competitive disadvantage. Dabo knows that.

I just checked the top 5 CBs from the portal. This is what I found…

Eli Ricks starts for UGA
Tanner McAlister starts for Ohio State
Jerrick Bernard starts for LSU
Jay Shaw starts for Wisconsin
Dwight McGlothern starts for Arkansas

I think any one of them would have been a better pickup than Myles Oliver.

The top 3 I would bet were tamper situations and they knew where they were going.

The portal is not the challenge. Deciding whether to full on cheat and recruit other teams player is.

Gotta come up with something to stop it or the rich will just get richer.

I agree with this sentiment.

Dabo has preached family culture at Clemson. Bringing in players from the portal to start over guys that you recruited seems to contradict that.

I’m not suggesting that we bring in several portal players every year. We really only need CB and IOL this year. 2 players to fill holes immediately. I’m glad that we offered the two IOL. I wish we had offered a CB as well.

But, we didn’t. So now it’s about getting Sheridan back healthy. Nate, Fred, Pride, and Lukus will grow from this.

Timing is key

Sep 25, 2022, 12:19 PM [ in reply to Re: Transfer portal ]

5* Daylen Everett decomitted Dec. 10th - committed to UGA Dec. 14
3* Myles Oliver committed Jan 16. We needed a DB picked up a DB two weeks out from signing day
Eli ricks entered portal Nov 23 - committed to Bama Dec 15th
3* Tanner McAlister portaled Dec. 22 - committed to OSU Jan 5
3* Jarrick Bernard portaled Jan 20 - committed to LSU Jan 26
3* Jay Shaw portaled Jan 17 - committed to Wiskey Jan 18
4* Dwight McGlothern portaled Jan 16 - committed to Arkansas Jan 16

3 of these guys didn’t enter the portal till after Oliver committed. 2 were 3* and 1 was 4*.
What about these guys at the time would have been worth looking at or pursuing? It looks like a lot of these guys have a destination in mind before they enter the portal anyway.

I don’t disagree that we should and probably will start using the portal, but would Tnet be celebrating bc we just pulled in a former 3* recruit that couldn’t crack the depth chart at OK St., UCLA, or LSU?

Would Everette have been any better than Pride

Sep 25, 2022, 7:28 AM

or Lucas out there? We were down our best CB, an All American safety and our most experienced reserve CB.

Few teams are playing lights out in that situation, especially against a 6th year QB who will be drafted and an offense with so much experience.

The young guys got beat some. They also busted coverage plenty from just a lack of experience. Just having Jones and Greene prevents most of the busts, as they know the system. Get them back, things improve. Then we can turn some things loose with blitzes. Having young corners on islands who aren't reacting instinctively limits that.

The good thing is a win and they got some valuable experience against a great QB and some good wideouts.

Will pay dividends later this year and next.

Toriano was in good position on most of those plays, and the late hit was really an iffy call. Bang bang play where he was already committed to the hit.

The answer to that is yes. And no, they didn't get beat "some." They literally got beat on ever SINGLE play. Every single one. PI or 30 yard catch is getting beat. Show me a play where they won. There isn't one. Its insane to me that Wake didn't literally just throw it up every play and get a completion or PI. They could have gone up and down the field like that all night. So yes, anyone would have done better than losing on EVERY SINGLE PLAY.

Pride was in a position most of the time that required a good throw to beat him. He's going to be good if not great. I'm not so sure about Wiggins or Davis. It's too early to tell for Lukus but if others don't step up he's going to get a lot of experience quick.

Sep 25, 2022, 8:56 AM [ in reply to Would Everette have been any better than Pride ]

I don’t know. But that’s not what I’m really addressing here. Everette was a 5 star recruit that decomitted from us. We had one spot open late in the recruiting process.

That left us with two options: find a project or hit the portal. We chose to sign a project that wouldn’t be ready to contribute over a proven starter from the portal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Then which one is the "project"?

Do you remember a walk-on from Clemson beating an All_American CB from Bama for two TD's? All CB's get beat. Yesterday wasn't pretty, but a learning experience that will make the young CBs better.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Would Everette have been any better than Pride

Sep 25, 2022, 11:07 AM

Myles Oliver is the project. I think GT was his only P5 offer when we offered him after Everette decomitted. He ended up being a 3 star, ranked in the 700s I believe.

We lost a 5 star in Everette, then signed a project. But we knew Sheridan was the only returning CB with experience. Not sure why the coaches didn’t just find someone through the portal at that point.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Would Everette have been any better than Pride

Sep 25, 2022, 11:46 AM

Oliver IS a good player that will definitely be a contributer if he stays the course. I will agree that he is a project, but I would say that about 90% of freshman. The kid has a lot of upside and played in a REALLY tough region, successfully, that ain't bad. The big thing a lot of us need to recognize is that a lot of these kids didn't get as much exposure during the "covid era" as in years past and not everyone can go to all of the UA and Nike Camps. This is why some under the radar kids are 3* and those that camp everywhere can be 4*. The camp system has been flawed for decades as I watched a hometown guy and friend, Wally Richardson get tabbed as the #1 QB in the nation coming off of camps. He was good, but #1? No. Sorry for the long reply, but let's not hate on Oliver. Go Tigers!

Totally agree! Also a little more cover 2 would possibly had helped yesterday. Look at the last player of the game. The corner had help. The thing is we were playing true freshman out there and having to learn on the fly. They will get the coaching and will be ok going forward!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Transfer portal

Sep 25, 2022, 8:13 AM

I hate to say this and I hold my nose as I do, but if other big names are going to flat out recruit players from other schools (looking at you Saban) we are going to have to as well. Come play where you can win a NC is very attractive.

That has to be the tactic until the NCAA can find a way to enforce rules to stop tampering.

Tampering should equate to the death penalty for 2 years. It has that much impact on the integrity of the game.

Cannot have the mediocre teams with great players start to be the farm teams for the big dogs.

Sep 25, 2022, 10:15 AM [ in reply to Re: Transfer portal ]

getting to the NFL is what these kids care about in high school, Natty maybe a small part of it but the real goal in the NFL... these kids are told they are the next coming... we got a few young kids that got humbled Saturday, they will either respond and improve or head to the portal... for the vast majority of players the NFL never happens, to those that do make it, its short lived, not a lot of 10-15 year veterans in the NFL...

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Tampering

Sep 25, 2022, 8:20 AM

How many good players enter the portal without knowing their new destination? My guess would be not many. To know your transfer destination means that the receiving school has cheated and committed tampering. Dabo is never going to cheat or tamper. We all can talk about getting players from the portal but, unless the rules change, Clemson will gain very few players this way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Tampering

Sep 25, 2022, 8:30 AM

I agree. When people talk about the portal and look who Bama got, I suspect those players chose to leave their school and go to Bama. I think many mistakenly think recruiting the portal is like recruiting a high school player. It’s not. Those that don’t know when they enter are not going to be the quality of players that will add value.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Tampering

Sep 25, 2022, 9:22 AM

I’ve never commented on the portal before. However, I agree with you. I think the players that have the potential to be immediate impact players already know where they’re going to end up before they ever enter the portal. It’s hard to believe that there is not some sort of cheating or tampering in those instances. I don’t know.

Outside of those players, I don’t know how many others in the portal could be considered “proven starters”. What’s left are guys that can’t get on the field or are unhappy. So, basically people would be asking Dabo to; 1) cheat to get the immediate impact player, or 2) take a risk on a project player from the portal when that is easily done via the normal recruiting process.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Transfer portal

Sep 25, 2022, 9:00 AM

You all are missing the point. Clemson can greatly benefit from the portal, but Dabo refuses to use it. We lost both starting CBs and only had one experienced CB returning. We all knew CB would be the weak link on the defense. The transfer portal helps fix that instantly. That’s what all the other great teams are doing. They fill holes through the portal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Transfer portal

Sep 25, 2022, 9:05 AM

And you are missing the point that we all know (and some agree) that Dabo has a certain type of player he wants on his team and he will not recruit someone who doesn’t fit. Add in the factors that he needs to be a proven player and the limited selection in the portal and it all of a sudden doesn’t look like such an easy solution.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Transfer portal

Sep 25, 2022, 10:23 AM

I think Leon and Rhett both make valid points but the fact is the very top tier schools the last two years have proven that their use of the portal has given them a pretty big advantage.
For them, it's the same as adding a 4 or 5 star recruit(with experience).

Great post! Expecting Us to have two functional CBs ready to play is not too much to ask. Expecting two freshman to be ready even at 2nd team is risky at best. 2-3 years ago we did not fill our 85 slots because of poor planning. We had no 3* fallback offers who after a couple of years in the program would be able to play basic press man and turn their head to the ball instead of watching the receiver. We could have found a player or two in the portal as insurance but chose not to engage. Surely a functional CB was available who was not a delinquent so our culture would have been protected. Dabo has been great for Clemson but is not perfect so when folks question him it is not the end of the world
