Woke Movement having Opposite Effect
Sep 7, 2020, 2:33 PM

Don’t know about most white folks but having this agenda shoved down my throat and told I’m only where i am in life because I’m “white privileged” has really made me struggle with racism more. I truly felt my generation was moving past racism and this new movement is doing much more to widen the racial divide than to close it.

So calling someone racist who wasn't really racist is going to open the door for self reflection? What ####### thought that was a good idea? You?

Not sure what name you called me because you lack the self control to use appropriate language, but I don’t come to TigerNet to change the opinions of the ignorant. If you can’t absorb the current events well enough to come to that reflection on your own, then you are a lost cause.

Not one of the police brutality victims complied with the police.
Now it’s my fault? Come on.
I think there are a ton of folks willing to help the less fortunate find their way to prosperity if they are willing to work to get there. Contrary to many of the talking heads- It’s not handed to anyone. I firmly believe one of the biggest issues within the black community as a generality is fatherless homes. Now BLM is openly attacking the Neil war family.
Then you have the equality of outcomes crew. That’s socialism. That’s a dirty corrupt system that holds the distinct honor of killing millions of people.
But again it’s racism and white privilege... ironic that global warming demanded the same changes to our republic. No?

I agree with you on that one. What kind of people would want this person below to become president?

The messaging out there right now goes like this: If you are white, THEN 1) You are inherently racist, and 2) Any success you have had in life is 100% attributable to your skin color.
It's a demeaning message that discriminates against people based on their race. i.e. it's a racist message.
There are laws against discrimination. There is justice for all equally. The current riots are not about equality or justice. They're about Antifa and other anarchists trying to dismantle our Law and Justice society. Those law enforcement officers found guilty of criminal behavior will get their just punishment. No one needs to protest anything in order for that to happen.

Fluxus,
I don't think most people (even people of color) think that all white's are racist or just got where they are because they are white. When you paint us in these extreme terms, it makes it far more difficult to have a reasonable conversation.
Perhaps part of the problem is that the most extreme views on both ends of the spectrum seem to get amplified the most. Antifa and anarchists may be getting on the news, but many of us on the left do not support their positions. I imagine that some of the more racist and reactionary people on the right do not accurately reflect your positions. Let's not allow that to demonize reasonable people who are willing to talk and compromise to make things better.
OTOH, I don't think that any rational examination of our society o our justice system would come to the conclusion that we have achieved equality for all.

Self reflection is always good. If this is going to be an adult conservation I do have some questions. Was affirmative action a failure? For years white males have been held told that to be considered average they had to perform above average. Did this pressure lead to the drug overdose problem in young, white males? Also, why has it been so difficult to advance African American males in the school system? I have had students that had the ability to handle advanced math but refused to be accelerated because of peer pressure. It seems that they did not want to be viewed as smart. The peer pressure problem has just gotten better the past five years. What all is the Woke movement trying to accomplish? Whites are killed by cops also. I would like to see the stats on people killed by cops that obeyed police commands. I can think of one. That was the African American school employee that was licensed to carry. That case still makes me mad. The football team has made it clear they want this discussion to happen. Let’s get everything out in the open and talk like adults. Thank you and always Go Tigers!

Tigergirl,
I wanted to pick at some of your questions, but then I saw your last statement.
"Let's get everything out in the open and talk like adults."
If we all do that we can move forward in a manner that we can all be proud of. I'm for that !!

Great comments - keep posting!!
Agree, until blacks can do their homework and get good grades without being ostracized for being "white" then nothing changes for the long term. I've had 3 kids through public school, and this type of culture thing has been in place a LONG time.
Education and individual responsibility is the ONLY way out of poverty for blacks. This will take a change in black culture.
Whites CANNOT do this for them. No matter how many whites sympathize with the progressives and vote democrat it will not change what happens in the 'hood. Removing statues doesn't change the basic stat that over 50% of homicides are committed by black males when they make up 6 or 7 % of the population.
It's statistics and reality that cause whites (and Asians and Hispanics) to question the law abiding nature of the general black male. Now, what has happened...it is worse.

taking no offense.
When young, I had good relationships and many interactions with Black Americans. Admittedly, my contact with Blacks has diminished over the years. My understanding of current issues facing Black Americans is limited. So it’s reasonable that I need to listen more, take no offense and keep an open mind. The same could be said for the Hispanic community. It’s not a personal indictment when life’s experiences have made a person unaware of the experiences of others. If so inclined, Christian values can provide insight into tolerance, acceptance and assistance.

T3,
This seems reasonable. I think things have gotten better (I grew up in the 60s). But the first black this or the first black that can be misleading. There are always exceptional people who can overcome even unfair odds. When we truly make racial progress in this country, average people of all colors will be able to face the same odds and obstacles to success - and will find comparable results (statistically)
I would also point out that the vast majority of people protesting are not criminals - and they are not being destructive. The people who are being destructive are the ones that get on the news. Please don't let that obscure the people who have legitimate complaints and are protesting legitimately. For every destructive person in the news, there are dozens and dozens who are protesting peaceably. For every riot your see on TV there are dozens that don't get on TV for the very reason that they were peaceable.

...and the vast number of people are protesting because they believe black men are being ROUTINELY killed by police, which is a total lie propagated by the left.
Social media and MSM have hijacked reality.

Lets first take color out of the equation. This would be the first step. If we want to talk about people that have and people that have not much money that would be a good start. If we want to talk about young men getting arrested or being afraid of the police we can talk about that too. We can talk about anything but leave the color of your skin out.

Crush,
I like the sounds of that and i agree that poverty may have as much to do with some of this as color.
That being said, i think it is hard to set color aside when it is such a part of the reality - and the problems. I don't know we can truly separate it.

If you cannot leave skin color out then there is nothing to talk about. BLM was founded by a Marxist that lived in Cuba because she was a fugitive from the USA. Their major fund raiser for BLM is a convicted felon on terrorist and murder charges. She was let out of prison on Bill Clinton's very last day as president with a pardon. How can you have conversation with those 2 the leaders of BLM?

ranger,
I sort of agree with you about the term "white privilege" It makes it sound like white people have gotten something that they don't deserve rather than that black people have been deprived of something that they deserve (which is the more accurate case).
Burt that doesn't mean that the gap between whites and blacks does not exist.
I think a number of people felt like we were moving past racism, but I don't think the current discussion widened the racial divide. It merely reminded us (uncomfortably) that we really aren't past it as much as we may have thought.

Then the movement is having the intended effect(making you more racially aware). I don't think it's causing increased racial division. The split is simply between those that are on board with this movement and those that oppose it.
