Did he list the ten or so schools ready to hire him? Has to eliminate those with artificial turf.

We really have enough haters in this world. If you don't have something good to say, say nothing. Kind of lost in some generations due to anonymity of social media.

I agree. He was better than a lot of his predecessors. And he brought us Dabo. I believe that he recommended him to be his replacement. I'd take him over Holtz or Spurrier any day. He's an honest, Christian man. We owe a lot to him. Go Tigers.

I'm absolutely positive that when he brought Dabo to Clemson, he didn't have any plans of Dabo becoming the HC after he couldn't deal with a warning from the AD and just quit. They called it resigning, but quitting and resigning are one of the same!!!

i read it as "wins"... haha.. anyway.. i liked tommy.. but, he wasn't respected in a fearful way like a true coach.. leader.. should be. good guy.. average coach. but, i think to be a great coach is hard.. look at the landscape of college football.. there are only a handful of truly great coaches out there.. at least PROVEN great coaches, anwyay.. and, we're lucky to have one of them.. and, a lot of that thanks goes directly to tommy bowden.

I don’t want to put a statue of him on campus, but the guy did pretty well here. Tommy West doesn’t get as much abuse and he was awful.

The ACC was weak when Tommy Bowden coached at Clemson also, and he couldn't win the ACC championships, and most of the time, he couldn't even make it to the championship game. I really didn't think his comments should carry any weight at all about the ACC being that he couldn't win it all!!!

The "very weak ACC" is 3-4 combined versus the Big Ten and SEC this football season.
The Big Ten is 3-1 combined versus the SEC and ACC. The SEC is 2-3 combined versus the ACC and the Big Team.
Make of it what you will.

My lasting impression of Bowden's teams was flashes of greatness & elite talent but overall doomed by inconsistency & inability to match up against physical defenses. Thrilling wins - SC '00, GT '01, FSU '03, SC '03, Tenn '03, Miami '04, FSU '05 '06 '07; cancelled out by the ugly beatdowns - FSU '00, Texas Tech '02, UGa '03, VT '07, Alabama '08; the heartbreakers - GT '00, GT '04, Miami '05, BC '05, BC '07; & the true headscratchers like Duke '04 & Maryland '06. Also it never helps to be getting your #### handed to you by Wake Forest (though WF was good back then).
On the positive side - TB established a wholesome culture, generally brought in players with good character, graduated his players & kept embarrasing off-field incidents to a minimum. TB took over our program at its lowest point in 2+ decades & uplifted it in terms of talent & overall wins. And no small matter - the TB hire succeeded in uniting the fan base after the division of the Hatfield & West years, put all the fans back in DV & thus revived the great gameday atmosphere that has always been an important part of our sales pitch to recruits. Finally, in '08 when forced out after the 3-3 start & the 12-7 loss @ WF, he bowed out gracefully when a lesser soul could've burnt everything down on the way out the door. That helped keep our team together & allowed Dabo to start out with a clean slate & the team fully united behind him. That said, there's no reason in my opinion to feel sad for TB. He's a rich man, set for life, thanks largely to CU. We hired him to win championships, not win 7 a year & make some lower-tier bowl. We gave him 10 years (!) & by that time it was pretty obvious what he could deliver - ceiling of 9 wins, floor of 6, average of 7. A pretty good coach, good man morally & ethically, just not a championship-caliber head coach.

WHAT IF THE ENTIRE SEC IS OVER-HYPED AND OVERRATED, now when they play each other ,they are beating ranked teams. Some FCS teams actually have very convincing stats and look great from the eye-test. From relativity standpoint for example, LSU beat Auburn by 3, Auburn beat A&M by a touchdown. Both Bama and Clemson beat A&M by a much bigger margin. Furthermore, North Carolina beat South Carolina and South Carolina beat Georgia at Georgia. The LSU vs Bama game today will be a good litmus test. If Bama beat LSU by 2 touchdowns or more provided that Tua is healthy, then the hypothesis that Bama and Clemson are above the rest is still true. Keep in mind that neither one has played a ranked team up to this point, therefore neither one has been able to prove themselves.

IMO Clemson is in a no lose situation.
Of the top six, the one assured of a play-off spot. Nothing to stop them.
Beat QB, though working through a sophomore slump, still the beat. (By the way sophomore slump does not mean the has regressed. It is a combination of several things ... he is trying to do more ... teams are getting better at game planning against him ... and the D is not putting him in as good position as last season.
Since I brought up D ... lost a lot of talent ... they are young , but now have 2/3’s of a season under their belts ... boat load talent coming in next season.
Win and ya out in ... could win by 40 today!

I think Tommy Bowden's record at Clemson is entirely mixed. In one sense, he modernized Clemson's offense and made the school competitive in NFL-style QB recruiting. There were many fans in the 90s who considered Clemson's relative decline to not being able to find 450 pound OLs to steamroll defenses while continuing to reserve passing for trick plays. Bowden definitely changed the direction.
On the downside, Bowden was not a good real-time game coach. I have so many memories of his deer-in-the-headlights look on the sidelines in the 4th quarter when Clemson was trailing and the clock was running. His instincts during critical moments were sometimes dreadful.
Ultimately, he was a brick-builder. Somebody else had to take the program to the next level.
