Can we be better this year. I still am amazed at how well we dominated the trenches vs. Bama in ‘18. I know it all comes together. Defense gets you back on the field, offense successful, gets d on their heels, wears them out etc but a truly dominating win. Then with LSU and the second OSU game it seemed we were almost trying to create an illusion that our o line was better than it was. But, I’d sure like to be able to hope for some progress this off-season.

LT-McFadden, Leigh, Tucker, Miller
LG-Tate, Pennington, Rayburn, William's
C-Rayburn, Trotter, Linthicum, Howard
RG-Putnam, Pennington, Trotter, William's
RT-Parks, Mayes, Sadler
I do think the interior is a true competition

Weslichick you've got to a bit learn more about evaluating O-Line play if you're calling Putman terrible. Putnam may not be All-American, but he's a good player.
Surely you've got some friends who watch football and have seen enough to recognize good play when they see it. Check with them if they watch Clemson football carefully.

Yea, he’s terrible. I’ve seen enough football to know that if there is a running play to the right side and the right guard is consistently knocked 3 yards into the backfield, it isn’t going to work very often. He’s an average pass blocker, but is a terrible run blocker.

Putnam is not a playoff-level team starter. I wish he would be, but he’s not.
He was a liability last year, surrounded by a few other liabilities, so he didn’t stand out as much.
We need 2-3 developed players out of the portal if we do not want to refer to this unit as a weakness.

Maybe Leigh gets a starter job late in the season. But talent alone (or even talent with a RS and a year of coaching) is not usually good enough.
Let's look at Marcus Tate this year. A manifest talent, and started the 2021 season because of his talent. But M.Tate didn't know the plays well enough (kept running into his O-Line teammates) and didn't have the snap-count discipline to keep from committing frequent illegal procedure penalties.
Accordingly, despite M.Tate's talent (and undoubtedly he worked hard), he was relegated to the bench from ~ mid-year until the Cheez-It Bowl. M.Tate looked good in Cheez-It.
It is only rarely that true FR O-linemen are ready enough to start. Mitch Hyatt comes to mind.

last year was a baptism under fire and Bock had to move to C early and Tate had to start due to attrition already.
I expect Leigh to get plenty of snaps, Pennington as well as we get back to rotating on the OL.
Linthicum is a guy I'm hoping makes some strides, although the mental aspect at C likely means he plays less and learns. I want to see him physically ready though after a year in power hour. The OL in 2 years could be lights out

LT - McFadden - has earned the right to play where he wants. So probably LT. Projects as NFL G.
LG - Tate - growing pains in 2021 getting prepped for 2022. Make it count.
C - Rayburn - Heard all Summer 2021 how Rayburn was dominant. Then moved to bench. Nothing. Why and is HR ready for 2022?
RG - Pennington. Putnam was tough, slow & sloppy. Needs help.
RT - Parks. WIP. Keep working.
Hopefully Leigh can beat out a starter or get in rotation early.

Dude…or ma’am…you are an idiot if you think we’ve ever dominated any trenches vs Bama or a lot of other teams on the offensive side of the ball…I will give you this…the last drive vs Bama we ran it down their throat but Iah that was much more about them quoting than us imposing our will…on the defensive side we have always imposed out will with a few exceptions…

We ran it really well on Bama and dominated them late.
We haven’t had a hard nosed running team since then.

Not even talking about the play of the OL. Just looking at them compared to some of the OL from some of the better teams out there; "My Tigers OL looks small in comparison **from TV I must admit**"!
I've wondered if we changed the way we train or something for "trench guys" or something! We most certainly could use some more strength and physical play at the line!

The physical build of our OL and even DL just doesn't look the sames as some of these teams like Alabama, OSU, and Georgia for instance. The build of those guys in the trenches is visibly different than us. Legs like tree trunks, bigger hips, bigger arms. Same with running backs and linebackers. They are physically bigger and more muscular. What gives?
Are we recruiting smaller players than other teams? No, absolutely not. Are we growing them differently. Absolutely. You can see it with the naked eye.
There's something different in our strength and conditioning program. We have been able to outscheme and outcoach a lot of these guys, but take for instance the last Ohio State game.. they were much more imposing at the first and second levels. Bigger linemen, linebackers, and running backs. That's why they physically manhandled us in route to 400 yards passing and 250 yards rushing. We had no answer - we could be in position but were just getting shoved around. Same in reverse - our offensive line couldn't run block those guys if our lives depended on it. They were pushing us off the ball with relative ease.
I don't know what it is, but in all honesty I think it has something to do with us doing things "the right way". I honestly think there are things being done at other places that aren't within the rules. HGH maybe? Neither the NCAA or NFL tests for HGH, and teams like Bama, Ohio State, and Georgia look like NFL teams. Hmmm.
Something is going on. We can take pride in being able to outsmart and out-QB some teams, but we can't rely on that.. like when we last played in the playoffs.
I do believe our program is fully aware of what those programs are doing differently, but under this regime we are not going to break any rules.
So what do we do? Rely on intelligent coaching and generational QBs? I guess so. But darn I wish we could at least change the look of our offensive line.
