Will someone please explain our strategy on punt returns?
Nov 21, 2016, 11:42 PM

I'm probably making this overly simplistic, but it seems that the receiving team either tries to block the punt or setup for the return. Yet we seem to do neither. With rare exceptions, we don't seem to be close to blocking the punt. However, when our punt returner catches it, he typically has several opposing players ready to tackle him. So what exactly are we doing?

Well with Ray Ray out there....the strategy is just to catch it
No seriously...Dabo has been on record stating that priority #1 punt returns is to secure possession for our Heisman Candidate QB..:anything more is a bonus.

It's been to return. The problem is our downfield blocking is inconsistent. The muffed punts are obviously bad, but Ray Ray does a lot right. We aren't far from making major returns a possibility, so I'm hoping Ray Ray gets another chance.

Dude, I like Ray Ray but how many chances? I have seen high school punt returners that NEVER DROPPED A SINGLE PUNT. He drops 1 to 2 a GAME. This is not a good situation.

I know some of yall see nothing but orange kool-aid splashed everywhere, but I've been asking this same question, well, since Sammy went pro. Still waiting to hear an answer. Try to block the punt, or try to set up some kind of a return. I mean why even have anyone back there to catch the punts?

I think our strategy should be to play punt safe and fair

catch the football.
Run Punt Safe so you are not vulnerable to fake.
Fair Catch to minimize chance to fumble.
We have one of the best offenses in the nation and we don't need to make plays in the punt game...we just need the change of possession to happen clean and put #4 back on the field with his offense.

If we are going to do that, do NOT put Ray Ray back there. Get someone with good hands.

Agree - Ray Ray is a weapon...

in the pass game. Get him the ball in space and he is dangerous. He's a liability as a punt returner. Get someone with sure hands FIRST - then work on the return aspect.

Someone mentioned Ray Ray to KOR and keep Scott at punt returns. Have to agree with this one.

The most nervous I get in a game is when a team punts to us. I literally can't breath

Seems like the punt block is not emphasized in college football as much. If the punter is roughed a defensive stop is wasted. It does seem like there are few chances for Clemson to return a punt. Ray Ray right now is a risk. The coaches know a lot more than I do so let them figure it out but there does seem to be something missing in punt returns. Also, there is not a lot of products in kick off returns. If the returns are only getting to the 20, down the ball and start at the 25.

We don't block them at the line...

... instead they run down the field with them and try to block after the punt is caught. I don't get it.

See Ray Ray running backwards to catch it a lot on punt returns. Maybe the strategy is have all his momentum going backwards, so they'll chase him the wrong way, then he can juke them out one by one and eventually have a 150 yard punt return for a new ncaa record.

One last week. Big Dex got a little to much inertia going and roughed kicker.
I guess we try and block when we see a weakness in opponents protection
Just catch the freakin punt would be wish
