Wide Receivers

Sep 26, 2021, 11:09 AM

Incredible talent, but total mismanagement on the recruiting trail. We have the same type of WR. Our top 6 are tall, vertical threats. We don’t have the speedy WR or a true slot. And the coaches have Adam Randall (6’3) committed, with Andre Greene (6’3) as their next target.

This offense might be bad for a while.

I don't care if we have Jerry Rice in his prime, if your quarterback can't throw to him it doesn't matter.

It’s not the QB. We have no diversity at WR. DJ looked great last year with Amari and Cornell.

DJ doesn’t have someone that can be a threat with jet sweeps or quick screens. He doesn’t have that guy that can create instant separation on a slant or out-route.

All he has are tall WRs that are great vertically. But when teams take that away by playing two high safeties all game, then he has nobody to rely on in the underneath game.

when the ball is going 100mph 10 ft over the wr's head IT IS the qb. What you say about the wr group is true, but let's not pretend the our eyes haven't seen what DJ looks like

Re: Wide Receivers

None of our WRs are getting separation though. Trevor and Deshaun had bad moments as well. But they also had dudes that could get separation with 10 yard routes. DJ doesn’t have that. His windows are tiny compared to what Deshaun and Trevor had. I know DJ isn’t as accurate as they were, but that problem looks worse because of our WRs. It’s not like he got worse from year one to year two. He just had diversity at WR last year with Amari, Cornell, and EJ. He doesn’t have that this year.

Go back and look at how awful Trevor was to start 2019 when he only had Tee, Ross, and Overton. And then keep in mind that Trevor struggled despite having 3 starting offensive lineman that eventually got drafted and the best RB in school history.

Don’t forget Renfrow. He hauled in a lot of imperfect passes, some of them saved the game.

I agree and have made similar posts. But isn't that what the tightends are for? I know they're not quick but they run short routes usually. How did we know one was going to have hands of stone and the other seldom plays.

Re: Glad We Got Tall Targets ---

Sep 26, 2021, 11:19 AM

When we ever get in the redzone.....that very height that they have will be helpful for lob passes....fade routes....high back shoulder routes..and bodying defenders off on post routes.

The route running is what needs to improve and be much more creative. Jump balls aren't going to cut it on every play but they need to teach them to use those long arms and hands better.
Dabo is an old receivers coach...he should do more on all that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Glad We Got Tall Targets ---

Sep 26, 2021, 11:54 AM

You only need one tall WR to catch lob passes in the endzone. Every plays zero coverage down there. You can’t just throw lob passes, you need guys that can create instant separation against man coverage. We don’t have that. It has to be so easy to gameplan against our offense. Don’t allow us to beat you vertically. Force our tall WRs to beat your CBs on quick routes.

don't seem to run those routes often enough or DJ can't get it to them. I do think we have thrown a lot of jump balls through Mike Williams and Tee Higgins that maybe don't work as well with this group. Gotta find that quick slot guy for sure!

Re: Wide Receivers

Sep 26, 2021, 11:20 AM

I was thinking the exact same thing earlier. All we recruited lately are tall jump ball guys. They seem to have zero route running ability other than just run straight and win the jump ball. In high school they can be very successful and put up gotti numbers and have great highlights. But the inability to create separation because of your route has been missing for a long time. The last two QBs where so amazing they were able to drop dimes to these WRs and that hid this issue for many many years.

Re: Wide Receivers

Sep 26, 2021, 11:41 AM

Deshaun had diversity at WR though. He had Mike Williams and Deon Cain as vertical threats. He had Renfrow in the slot. He had Artavis and Ray Ray in the quick game.

Trevor’s freshman year was with Tee and Ross on the outside. Renfrow in the slot. Amari in the quick game. The start of his sophomore year was awful because he only had Tee, Ross, and Overton while Amari was recovering. He got better once Amari got back in the slot. But he still lacked a fast body to complement Tee on the outside. Then last year he didn’t have the tall, vertical threat. While also having a bad offensive line.

I don’t place the blame on DJ. He’s obviously not as accurate was Deshaun and Trevor, but he also doesn’t have a weapon to rely on underneath.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep - WR and OL are a bigger issue than QB IMO

Sep 26, 2021, 12:06 PM [ in reply to Re: Wide Receivers ]

There are plenty of WRs out there every year that could help us with with an average qb. Play calling need to tailor to what you have not who’ve you’ve been.

Re: Wide Receivers

Pretty sure T Stellato is a pure slot.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Wide Receivers

Sep 26, 2021, 11:51 AM

That’s true. But he’s also a true freshman. And Dabo is playing his two sons more than him. Spector was also supposed to be that slot guy too.

So you have two slot guys mixed in with Ross, Ngata, Ladson, EJ, Ajou, Beaux, and Dacari. 2 slot guys and 7 tall guys.

That is simply a poorly managed WR room. There’s no other way around it. The staff stopped signing the Sammy, Artavis, Ray Ray, and Amari type WR. The last one was DK back in 2018. We went 3 years without signing a smaller, faster WR that is dangerous with jet sweeps, screens, and underneath throws. It’s going to be 4 years now because we are signing another 6’3 guy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They're trying to recruit those WRs but have missed...

Sep 26, 2021, 12:23 PM

Staff wanted Mecole Hardman badly, but he went to UGA.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: They're trying to recruit those WRs but have missed...

Sep 26, 2021, 5:55 PM

Mecole Hardman was 7 years ago lol. We simply don't make serious efforts to land that Sammy type at WR anymore, or dangerous slot guy.

2022: Brenen Thompson and 2 tall guys

2021: Troy Stellato, Mario Wililams, and 6 tall guys

2020: Rakim Jarrett, Arian Smith, and 11 tall guys

2019: Brannon Spector and 9 tall guys

Defenses have gotten so much faster on defense. The trend is to get faster, shiftier type of WRs that can run the entire route tree. We are stuck in the past, recruiting primarily tall, vertical threats. And when we miss on the 1 or 2 fast WR, we are stuck with the same body types. It reared its head at the start of 2019 when Amari was recovering from his ACL. And its reared its heard again this year.

When we need a WR to beat someone on a quick slat, we don't have that guy. When we need someone to be a threat in the jet sweep/screen game, we don't have that guy. When we need a check down WR in the slot that can get open instantly with great route running, we don't have that guy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: They're trying to recruit those WRs but have missed...

Sep 26, 2021, 8:09 PM

We are down two slot guys right now. Spector is not playing and Will Taylor is playing mostly QB.

We may not have recruited the ones you like, but we recruited two in the last class and already had Spector.

I can’t imagine if Stellato was ready to make a difference he would not be playing.

Great analysis on Wide Receivers and we currently do not have that quick guy yet this year. Taylor even though he was QB seemed like an option for the slant as he brings the energy and is also doing punt returns. Also, do not see the WR's this year that are really willing to block and spring somethings open-that has been lacking a lot from this group. Definitely no Renfrow type here.

Re: Wide Receivers

Receivers implies we throw them the ball. I think ours should be called route runners. Or at least route joggers. Not sure they qualify as receivers this season.

Re: Wide Receivers

Sep 26, 2021, 12:21 PM

OK, our slot receiver Troy Stellato runs a 4.4 and has great hands. We can't play him for some reason. Freshman play across the entire country and start on our OL at left guard. So what's the excuse for our tight ends? Trevor found them for 43 catches last year. They had zero catches against NC State. Same O coordinator, nearly the same putrid OL. So why the huge drop off in tight end productivity?

Tight ends had zero receptions maybe but they had at least one drop at about the ten yard line. Both hands on the ball should be a catch. Not his first drop this year either. By the way after watching last play over and over Ross did not even extend his arm not being held for the ball. Wrong routes being run or at least DJ and/or receivers making bad reads. It is on all for poor execution. I also think the coaches may have messed with DJ's mechanics and ruined his natural motion of delivering the ball. Not all on the QB

Re: Wide Receivers

Sep 26, 2021, 7:45 PM [ in reply to Re: Wide Receivers ]

We don’t play Stellato because Will and Drew Swinney have “earned” their reps. It’s hard for Stellato to develop into an impact freshman when three walk-ons are playing more snaps than him.

As far as TE, I have no idea. The production from that unit has been terrible singe Leggett left.

Re: Vertical threat ? We can't take the top off

Sep 26, 2021, 5:57 PM

Because every defense plays two high safeties and forces us to beat them underneath. But we don't have that guy at WR. Ross is not a slot. Ngata, Ladson, EJ, and Ajou are just vertical threats. We have to win with quick slants, jet sweeps, or screens. But we only have 6'4 WRs that can't create instant separation and aren't fast enough to be threats with sweeps/screens.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Vertical threat ? We can't take the top off

Sep 26, 2021, 7:57 PM

Just watched EJs highlights from last year. Half of his highlights were crossing patterns between the hash’s. We have very rarely thrown to the middle of the field this year. I am not sure it is fair to say he is only a vertical threat when the film from last year says otherwise.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Wide Receivers

Sep 26, 2021, 6:13 PM

Definitely need a 3rd and Renfrow guy. Plus we never target tight ends. If I'm a 5 star TE recruit, that would have me looking elsewhere. One last thing, seems like most of the OL are freshman and sophomores, what happen to the Senior and Junior classes? Lack of development?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Wide Receivers

Sep 26, 2021, 10:04 PM

I agree we need smaller shiftier WRs...but come on man...DJ has whiffed when they do win the route. Would it make a difference w his inaccuracies and 100 mph fastball? I’m not so sure....#### did you see him miss Shipley badly on a 3 yd dump down?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Wide Receivers

Sep 26, 2021, 10:14 PM

Julio Jones the biggest beast of nfl receivers used to catch quick slants from the slot all the time. Ngata could do that IF DJ had any touch. This is not on the WR corps.
