Why so much emphasis and pressure on Cade?

2

Jul 30, 2024, 9:46 AM

Deshaun Watson certainly threw his share of interceptions while at Clemson.

I think the main differences in Cade's case are two:

1) When Watson had a turnover, his play led to confidence that he would more than make up for it. And, usually his mistakes were not in the red zone. Cade's turnovers seem to come at the worst possible position on the field, and to date, he has not shown the firepower to make up for those mistakes on a consistent basis. NOTE that that inability is certainly not all on him, the rest of the offense bears some of the responsibility.

2) Watson made the right decision most of the time on offense. Cade has really made some boneheaded audibles, sometimes to the point that he would have been in the coaches doghouse if we had a valid backup option. Therein lies part of the problem. Nobody was really pushing Cade, and we do not know if anyone really is, even now. He must take it on his own to get better, and from all outward appearances, he is trying to do that.

This is going to be a breakout season for Cade, and a re-emergence of the real Clemson offense. Either that, or we may see a different option under center, sooner rather than later. With the talent on this team, I do not believe that Dabo will ride with Cade and see another season go down the tubes if he thinks he has a better, or even equal option if mistakes continue to proliferate.

5* all world QB, should be better. That is all.

DW wasn't just a QB, he was a leader that could put the entire team on his back and WIN.

IMO you missed the most important difference between the two QBs. Cade does not have Mike Williams, Hunter R, Dion Cain, Ray Ray or Jordan Leggett to catch the passes.

Exactly Jstone. Been saying that for 3 years now. Cade had a receiver like that in HS and it made a huge difference. Let’s hope that WR room breaks out this year.

We had much better WR's back then

Better WR coach too.

The thing that was wild to me about 2015. We literally had a combined 7 starts on the Offensive Line going into that season. On paper, it should have been a disaster from the jump, but literally did we know we had some dudes on the Off Line.

And, the WR were hungry and the QB was always in attack mode, despite the inexperience.

Unfortunately, our previous wide receiver coach left a big hole in recruiting

Jul 30, 2024, 11:36 AM

that the current wide receiver coach has been filling up.

Looking forward to having 10 healthy wide receivers to run defenses ragged this year.

Did he leave a hole, or...

Jul 30, 2024, 5:40 PM

was it that Grishman couldn't develop them and get the most out of them?

Jeff would absolutely rip a player for not blocking or missing an route or assignment. Grishman never upheld that same standard and has yet to prove he can get the most out of his group.

2025 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've never understood the idea that a coach simply didn't develop a player

Jul 31, 2024, 11:29 AM

and that is the reason they never lived up to the hype. How would any fan know that to be the reason?

None of those guys transferred and became anything more than what they were.

Just go back and watch the Gator Bowl. The kid has heart but he is just clueless most of the time. He is the WORST QB to have back there with a suspect OL. He cannot make quick decisions. He seems to have zero instinct about what to do when he is pressured. And while he's athletic enough he's just not elusive like Watson.

It's clear to me that Cade has received very little higher-level QB skill coaching, at least through last season. Let's hope he has worked hard in the off season and found a source of instruction that can help him shore up his weaknesses.

Based on your title I was thinking your post was going to go a different direction. But I agree with almost everything you said. DW4 and Watson were generational. We’ve got to stop comparing every Clemson QB to those guys.

With that said this is a make or break year for Cade. He’s got to prove he can run with offense efficiently and not make dumb decisions and be able to see the field. He also needs to be able to use his legs. Time will tell.

DW4 and Watson are the same person. Just sayin'

All QB's make mistakes. It's the level & ratio of mistakes made. Also, it's

2

about game manager. It's also about finding a way to win.

Cade makes BAD mistakes way too often. He doesn't appear to be a reliable game manager. He seems lost and confused and having to be told to calm down way too often. He also finds ways to lose more often than the opposite.

Hopefully this all changes this year.

Dont think that Spring Game legend is it either. Coaches

Jul 30, 2024, 2:41 PM

had a quick whistle with Cade that they didn’t have with Pearman. Not sure we have a difference maker on the roster at QB.

Because we can't succeed unless...

Jul 30, 2024, 2:55 PM

he improves his game this season. No more mental lapses in key situations. No more staring down one WR while #10 and #6 are open and frantically waiving their arms trying to get his attention. Know the play-call, know your reads, see the field, and execute the offense. We don't need him to be DW4 because there isn't a chance in heck that's happening. We just need a game manager.

2025 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DW didn't have a bad TD/INT ratio and CK really doesn't...

Jul 30, 2024, 3:37 PM

either. Cade doesn't seem to have Watson's combination of a live arm & poise under pressure that made him an offensive threat in the passing game very early in his career, very few do.

Re: Why so much emphasis and pressure on Cade?

Jul 30, 2024, 11:30 PM

It’s simple. As the Offensive Line goes, so will go Cade and our season. No QB can go thru progressions if he’s got guys in his face in a second and a half. At least he didn’t hand off to the other team, that’s a massive improvement from the previous year. It may take a few games unfortunately but I believe by game 3 or so, the offense will be humming. Hope they’re ahead of that and are dialed in game 1.

Cade has the pedigree to be a champion, was put into a very awkward situation because of the California flash...his start was not championship calibre and we all know it...the wr situation combined with OL experiments made it worse...our new OC wasn't exactly Chad Morris...at TCU he had a tough as nails game manager QB and an all American RB from Mt.Enterprise, Tx...different cast at Clemson...Cade owns the ball now...no excuses!
