Title game thoughts and looking ahead to next season

Yes, it felt a little strange sitting in my living room watching the National Championship Game. Clemson has played in four of those games since 2015 so watching from afar was different and yet eye-opening. Full Story »

Re: our young players

Jan 15, 2021, 10:02 PM

Really good points here:
1. We were good but NOT what we were in 2018 - you hit it on the head with the "look."
2. Everyone said there was AL, OSU, Clemson and one more in the top 4 - turns out is was Bamma and 3 more - or maybe about 5 more fighting for the top spot.
3. Absolutely OSU had no chance from the get-go in the final - they did what they wanted to do, beat us but lost any chance of an upset doing it. Good for them - one out of 5 or 20% for you Buckeyes - I hope that makes you happy and makes us hungry again!
4. We're clearly in the hunter mode again rather than the hunted and I think that is OK with Dabo.
Excited for the spring and how the OL can improve and DJ with Ross back and the young guys developing will be special!

Plus OSU plan for Clemson gave Bama a full look at what they can and can't do, and Saban was grinning from ear to ear watching our game against OSU, Bama was ready for them!!! I guess just saying they made it to the title game was good enough for Day, and his job security!!!

Day has improved the Buckeyes recruiting above the Urban level.

I think we can expect to play either. both Alabama & tOSU every year for the foreseeable future.

The #4 team in the playoff may rotate, but the baring catastrophic losses by Clemson, Bama, or tOSU will not change in the playoffs

Like Mama always said, Class will show...

Jan 12, 2021, 9:23 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Title game thoughts and looking ahead to next season ]

but no matter how hard I tried to find some class in the Eleven Warriors article comments, it just wasn't there. I think the reason so many Ohioans move to Hilton Head is that it's close to Cootlumbia... they feel right at home. I could use a bunch of "colorful metaphors" for these folks, but they probably wouldn't understand them...

Re: TNET: Title game thoughts and looking ahead to next season

Jan 12, 2021, 2:00 PM

In the 2018 season, Clemson was the #2 with Notre Dame #3. Bama was the top seed and everyone in the media said the best team that ever existed, until Clemson crushed them. So, being the top seed isn't always necessary.

Fans want to expand the playoffs and that would put teams like the top seeded Alabama against a bottom seed. That's only going to result in more boring blowout games with the 2nd team going against the 7th.
I don't like that idea at all.

Ohio State fans definitely are stupid. I've been reading their nonsense on Youtube for a week or so and they are dense.
Yes, Ohio State definitely focused on Clemson for an entire year. They won a national title when they beat Clemson, so they think. The championship game was anti-climatic for them, because they had beaten who they wanted to beat. That's a losers mentality.

Re: TNET: Title game thoughts and looking ahead to next season

Jan 12, 2021, 2:04 PM

OSU shot their wad when they played us. That was their championship. I told my wife before the first quarter was even over that Bama was going to win big because OSU just didn't match up well against a vastly more talented Alabama. It is also likely that the Tigers wouldn't have won last night either....

Why r u so reluctant to write an article about our coaching?

Jan 12, 2021, 2:04 PM

I actually KNOW why.... we can't risk those media credentials.

But it would be great to see an article in TNet that questions and answers some of the obvious concerns a lot of fans have (not saying I personally have all these concerns, but clearly many do) and these questions deserved to be written about. Most notably:

-- BV's incessant tendency to wait until the last second to call in the play. This tactic works more than it doesn't..... until it doesn't. OSU may have shown others how to beat it. We'll see.

-- Dabo's involvement in the play calling (regular season.) How involved is he? Does he NEED to be? And if he NEEDS to be, see the next question:

-- The lack of creativity in our offensive play calling. Anyone who couldn't tell Sark was one of the best play callers in football last night (and every game) is living in an alternate reality. Everyone loves TE and his loyalty, but is he the "next level" play caller we're starting to see emerge as the standard for the upper tier?

At the next Presser, I'm hoping someone will ask some of these questions. Doubtful. <img border=

I don't understand why we can't acknowledge that we have great coaches who are also great people, while also asking some of the questions in your post. These guys are very well-compensated to do their jobs, and I think it's reasonable that they occasionally be asked some hard questions.

Again, I feel that we are blessed to have them as our coaches, and they have obviously done a phenomenal job. But this attitude that they can't dare be questioned or we don't appreciate them or don't value their coaching abilities is ridiculous.

Re: I also agree.

Jan 12, 2021, 8:40 PM

Agree judge. I still have Tmail from @HillRockTiger telling me I was an idiot and our coaches know best when I questioned recruiting in 2018 and 2019.

It’s ok to admit we have one of the best coaching staffs in America and also challenge them when you see short comings or risks to the program. It’s ok to form your own opinion and challenge what you see to keep Clemson machine rolling.

Hindsight I was right and those classes hurt us. Good news is all signs point to correcting that problem (especially 2019) and winning in the trenches again. Point being you can question our coaching staff and if we can see it they certainly can so why not bring up points to talk before our coaches fix it anyway.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I also agree.

Jan 13, 2021, 1:51 PM

Doesn't help that a lot of our 2018-2019 classes have been duds so far: XT, KJ, Ladson, Ngata, etc. have all not lived up to the hype of their recruitment. Goes to show just how hit or miss blue chips really can be.

2024 student level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ladson an Ngata were both injured. Not duds by any means.

Re: Why r u so reluctant to write an article about our coaching?

Jan 12, 2021, 4:53 PM [ in reply to Why r u so reluctant to write an article about our coaching? ]

I agree, our play calling is really weak. We beat people basically by having superior athletes that can out execute the guys on the other side. It works well 80 - 90 % of the time, but in the CFP and against tier 1 competition, works sometimes and sometimes not. Last 2 CFP games, NOT.

With opening up against GA this fall, if we aren't creative, we have 50/50 chance to win, as their athletes are just as good as ours.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have to agree. There are some obvious questions on coaching

Jan 12, 2021, 5:59 PM [ in reply to Why r u so reluctant to write an article about our coaching? ]

that come from the game. Defense: could NOT stop them. Something in the "adjustment" category seemed to be needed, but didn't appear to be made. On offense, we had some plays that worked, but seemed to go in another direction, which didn't work. Hopefully there is some "reflection" that's been done that the coaches can open up about. Ask the question!

Sarkisian is not just a good play caller, he is a good play

Jan 12, 2021, 8:48 PM [ in reply to Why r u so reluctant to write an article about our coaching? ]

designer. He designs plays to take advantage of his players' strengths. I've been harping ever since we got so RPO-heavy to simply insert a few (3 or 4) DESIGNED running plays where the OL can run-block. Same for a couple of DESIGNED drop back (or roll-out) pass plays with real live pass blocking. RPO is really difficult for offensive linemen... they don't know if the play is a run or pass... and if a run, where it's going and who's carrying the ball. I'm not dissing the RPO, but as a steady diet, it's too predictable.

I also think we could benefit from a little revamping of the playbook. You know it's getting "stale" when the defensive coordinators seem to have it figured out. Just saying that it doesn't hurt to mix things up now and again... offensively and defensively.

Go Tigers!

Re: Why r u so reluctant to write an article about our coaching?

Jan 13, 2021, 11:10 AM [ in reply to Why r u so reluctant to write an article about our coaching? ]

I agree with most of those questions. I would add a couple like:

Why are we trying so hard to get the third and fourth bodies on the depth chart playing time? While I fully understand the desire to get them game experience and reward them for hard work in practice, I can't help but feel it is restricting our top guys from valuable experience. End result is we end up with seven or eight really good guys but very few who fully develop into elite players. Yes, I realize the Power Rangers were elite, but look at the amount of playing time they had as a unit and not as individual players shuffling in and out. If the three and four deep guys get better with more game experience, doesn't it stand to reason that the one and two deep guys do also? Also, I dont remember seeing any trophies for getting the most players into the game...nor having your punter take valuable reps from young quarterbacks who could use the game experience.

Are we relying too much on our sign-stealing abilities on defense...and is that why we're waiting until the last second to call our defensive plays? I'm all for using every advantage available to us...until they become disadvantages. It seems that both Notre Dame (Game 1) and Ohio State figured out how to counter that be either using a huddle, running tempo and calling audibles with 5 seconds on the play clock and not giving BV time to counter, or by waiting for the defense to set, looking to the sideline for a new play, then running it before the defense can re-set. Stealing signs and knowing what's coming doesn't really help if your players are looking at you on the sidelines for a signal while the ball is being snapped.

These are not sour grapes or whining because we lost...just questions I would ask if I had press credentials.

Re: Why r u so reluctant to write an article about our coaching?

Jan 13, 2021, 1:43 PM [ in reply to Why r u so reluctant to write an article about our coaching? ]

The big thing I'm noticing on both sides of the ball: tight ends.

We have not had a real tight end threat on offense since Jordan Leggett. Where the heck was Braden Galloway all season? He's been a nonfactor since signing. Davis Allen shows some promise, but TE and Streeter/Grisham have not used the TE position properly in some time. We do not attack the middle of the field nearly enough, and I fear that unless we properly deal with (read: fire) Danny Pearman, these issues will not go away.

On the defensive side of the ball, nearly every loss since 2015 featured tight ends ripping us a new one:

2015: OJ Howard (Bama)- 5 rec, 208 yards, 2 TD
2016: Scott Orndoff (Pitt)- 9 rec, 128 yards, 2 TD
2017: Ravian Pierce (Syracuse)- 4 rec, 66 yards (Obviously lowest performance of the bunch)
2019: Thaddeus Moss (LSU)- 5 rec, 36 yards, 2 TD
2020: Michael Mayer (ND)- 5 rec, 67 yards; Jeremy Ruckert (OSU)- 3 rec, 55 yards, 2 TD; Luke Farrell (OSU)- 2 rec, 11 yards, 1TD

I've done a lot of film review of games where we didn't lose but our D got torched anyway:

2016: Cole Hikutini (Louisville)- 7 rec, 84 yards (Louisville had 568 total yards)
2018: Kiel Pollard (SCar)- 2 rec, 94 yards, 1 TD (SCar had 600 total yards)

So yeah, if you wanna beat the snot out of a Brent Venables defense, you have to attack the middle of the field with Tight Ends. We've never covered a solid tight end well, as one can see when OJ Howard ripped us a new one in the 2015-16 CFP Championship. And since 2016, we have not had a viable tight end threat on offense. This needs to change yesterday. Also, Pearman needs to go. His two areas of responsibility (TE and ST) have been liabilities for the better part of the last 6 seasons. Other than a select few freak athletes (Leggett, Pinion, Huegel, Catman, etc.), DP has been absolute garbage as a recruiter and developer.

Re: TNET: Title game thoughts and looking ahead to next season

Jan 12, 2021, 8:36 PM

That is such a stupid response. People like you are ignorant and clueless regarding the portal. You slam it because of Dabo. The minute Dabo gets a guy from the portal, which he will eventually if he wants more championship rings, you guys are going to hurt yourselves from the whiplash when you praise Dabo for using the portal better than anyone else.

There are plenty of 4 and 5 star guys in the portal and kids transfer for a lot of reasons. Not just playing time or the depth chart.

Guys that have transferred have won the Heisman and been not just 1st round draft picks, but the #1 pick!

Arik Gilbert is a 5 star TE from Georgia that we heavily recruited. He spent 1 year at LSU. Now he's in the portal. We offered him a scholly. He would be better than any TE on campus or committed and has more raw talent than any TE Dabo has had!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The question involved only offensive lineman.

Jan 20, 2021, 12:11 AM

Can you name an offensive lineman currently in the portal who would absolutely help us?

If so do it. Quit going on about Arik Gilbert.

Otherwise you just show your lack of reading comprehension by discussing Heisman winning QBs and TEs instead of addressing the issue at hand.

Once again. Read a little before you answer. That way you make actually make a good point occasionally.

Top OL in the transfer portal.

Re: TNET: Title game thoughts and looking ahead to next season

Jan 12, 2021, 4:34 PM

It was interesting to see the similarity between our game with OSU and this one. In both games, the game was won/lost in the 2nd quarter.

It is disappointing that we could not attack the weak OSU secondary like AL was able to given AL was not able to run on their D line much better than we were, especially given AL O line is considered the best this year.

I must say that AL did a great job of putting together a offensive game plan , specifically for Smith, knowing that OSU would be doing everything they could to contain him. Brilliant. We needed some of that!

Who do we have that could have been the threat Smith was?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Title game thoughts and looking ahead to next season

Jan 13, 2021, 1:49 PM

No one. Powell put Wade on skates a couple times, but he was starting to get doubled after the first couple major catches.

Amari isn't big enough to be a true deep ball threat. EJ is a bit too raw and doesn't know his routes yet, and Ladson was clearly not 100%.

Next year is a different story. I fully expect EJ to take major strides and hopefully be a boundary threat that we've missed since Tee left. I think the next big unexpected star a la Justyn Ross will be Beaux Collins. If anyone's watched DJ's HS tape, you'll see Beaux as his primary target. I think Beaux will transition nicely to the slot, leaving the other boundary position to one of Ngata, Ladson, or Ross if he chooses to play with us.

Where we really need development is TE. Braden Galloway has been an absolute bust, and I'm hoping Davis Allen and Jake Briningstool eventually fill that role someday.

Yes, TOSU focused on Clemson and had little left in tank for AL. It is arguable that The Tigers could have given a better account against AL. At least we would have had a better defensive answer than a 4-4!

My knowledge is not deep in football, however just wondering how much did our game provide game film for Bama to study what OSU tendencies are when they face a quality opponent? With playing us, it seemed like OSU probably had to pull out all they had (notwithstanding we didn't play great)?

Just wondering.....

Jan 12, 2021, 8:22 PM

David, given our recent recruiting, if the OL is not significantly better in 2 or 3 years do you not think the noise will get awfully loud from many directions to make some coaching changes? To go to Bama, Texas A/M, Notre Dame, OSU, etc. and poach a better OL staff?

We have not had a dominant OL since 1991 and the last of the Ford guys.

That 2016 line couldn't gain a yard to seal the Pitt game.

We have won championships and had great games, like 2018 vs. Bama, but not a consistently dominant OL in a very long time. Why can we develop talent every where but one position?

I have been saying for years the only thing stopping us from being truly dominant is our inability to consistently develop a dominant OL.

I've been saying the same thing for years as well!! Trevor was pressured the entire game against OSU. We had the best running back in CFB, but he couldn't have consistent games because of the weak OL play, and I haven't seen an improvement Robbie Caldwell been there!

Please someone give the guy's above message to Dabo!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DH we chatted about this on FB

Jan 12, 2021, 9:36 PM

Alabama’s 2020 o line depth chart lists 13 players.

Six of the 13 are 6’5 or taller.
NINE of 13 are 325 or heavier.

Both of their tackles and their center are NFL dudes. Period. They are UNITS.

In comparison. Clemson lists ten players on its online depth chart.

3 of ten are 6’5 or taller.
3 of ten are 315 or heavier.

Being tall and heavy doesn’t guarantee success, but if one teams four and five star kids are bigger and heavier than the other teams four and five star kids, that’s potentially a MAJOR difference in huge games.

Re: TNET: Title game thoughts and looking ahead to next season

Jan 12, 2021, 10:52 PM

David Hood was exactly right, Alabama was the best team and honestly you could pick the best players from the Ohio State, Clemson and Notre Dames defenses and not stop that offense. That could have also been said about LSU being the best last year and it would not have mattered one bit that Clemson and beat each other up because neither team was going to win this year or last.

David is also correct that our improvement has to start in the trenches but it also has to include better play from the linebackers and finding a receiver that actually has the speed to run by defenders. We can be better but so will North Carolina, NC State and Miami so winning the ACC is no gimmie. There is work to be done but I trust Dabo and his coaches to get it done.

Re: TNET: Title game thoughts and looking ahead to next season

Jan 13, 2021, 12:20 PM

I have to say, I was shocked to see OSU’s reaction to losing to Bama. Most fans were like, it’s no big deal because We beat Clemson. That is so weak and such a loser’s mentality...now that I think about it, it sounded like the coots during their winning streak. Programs that focus only on beating one team better watch out. That’s when one of those underdog unranked take you down.

Re: TNET: Title game thoughts and looking ahead to next season

Jan 16, 2021, 5:30 PM

It puzzles me, as I'm sure that it does most of T-Nation why this has happen bc, every coach on the Clemson FB team, they never forget that games are won, and lost in the trenches. It always has been, and it always will be that nothing moves the O line, or the D line better than big strong athletic big uglies on both sides of the ball.
